Back in 1994, long before he was cast to play Jaime Lannister in the hit series Game of Thrones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau made his feature film debut in the thriller Nightwatch, where he played a character named Martin, a law student who takes a job working as a night watchman at The Department of Forensic Medicine in Copenhagen just as the place starts filling up with the bodies of a serial killer’s victims. Nightwatch was so well-received that writer/director Ole Bornedal was given the opportunity to direct an English-language remake, which he wrote with Steven Soderbergh. Ewan McGregor played the Martin role in that 1997 film. Now, thirty years after working on the original Nightwatch together, Bornedal and Coster-Waldau have re-teamed for a “30 years” later sequel called Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, which is set to be released through the Shudder streaming service on May 17th!

Rama (Pavel Tabakov) is a vampire.
In writer/director Victor Ginzburg’s adaptation of Russian novelist Viktor Pelevin’s Empire V, however, the term takes on a whole new meaning.
Mixing the action of Nightwatch with the philosophical underpinnings of The Matrix sequels, Empire V is an unconventional entry in the vampire subgenre. Working as both an introduction to a sprawling new mythology, as well as a satirical critique of (Russian) capitalism, the film has already been banned in its home country where it was due to premiere last year.
The film’s politics aren’t exclusive to Russia, though co-star Oxxxymiron (aka Miron Fedorov) and lead actor Vladimir Epifantsev have both been critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the former very publicly denouncing the invasion of Ukraine. For the most part, however, Empire V isn’t only commenting on Russia; its political commentary is broadly critiquing how the...

It’s not a coincidence that Volker Schlöndorff’s latest film The Forest Maker, the environmental essay documentary about Australian agronomist Tony Rinaudo, who found a way to grow trees in the most barren areas of Africa, is opening the 27th Sofia International Film Festival kicking off Thursday in the Bulgarian capital.
One of the major film festivals in Eastern Europe is going green, and the veteran German filmmaker, winner of the Palme d’Or and what was then called the best foreign language Oscar for The Tin Drum (1979), will plant the first tree of the future Sofia Film Festival Forest.
“We wanted to remind ourselves of our deep connection to the land and our power to be agents of change together. We wish to engage the public in the global vision of sustainable development of society and a responsible attitude towards nature”, the festival organizers said about the green...

Who do we traditionally consider to be Danish on screen, and why?
That is the question diversity action group ‘A Bigger Picture’ (Et Større Billede) is attempting to ask with its new visual campaign, which has sparked a controversial debate about representation and racism within the Danish film and TV industry.
The group, which comprises diverse members of the Danish industry, was created by actresses Laura Allen Müller (Borgen), Sandra Yi Sencindiver (Bäckström), Malaika B. Mosendane (Get a Life), Şiir Tilif (Borderline), and Dorcas Joanna Hansen. They teamed up during the pandemic through an informal support group for Danish actresses of color started by Sencindiver.
“It was just like a sisters network that’s been ongoing since 2020,” Sencindiver said.
Last month, the group made waves in Denmark when they released a series of images online that recreated the posters from three high-profile Danish productions: Fathers and Mothers by Paprika Steen,...

After three weekends in theaters, an unexpectedly early release of “Dog” (United Artists/$19.99) received a strong initial response with three #1 slots on charts ranked by revenue (Vudu) and by total transactions (iTunes and Google).
The Channing Tatum-co-directed and -starring film is #4 in theaters this weekend, down only 13 percent and approaching $50 million. That made it seem like a prime candidate for extended exclusive play and its studio has not been particularly aggressive on early PVOD. “No Time to Die” did appear after 30 days, but since then both “House of Gucci” and “Licorice Pizza” had two month windows before going to home platforms. It is one of two new PVOD releases from UA: “Cyrano” ($19.99) came out after only its second weekend.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/$19.99) debuts on Tuesday, a week ahead of the previously announced release date. It is certain to displace “Dog” and dominate the charts, as it did in theaters.

Shooting mostly in Iceland and Greenland, the team behind Netflix’s upcoming release “Against the Ice” – now shown in Berlin – had to battle punishing weather conditions and freezing cold, as well as star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
“It was quite challenging, working with Nikolaj. Apart from that, it was alright,” joked actor Joe Cole during the press conference. “My character is quite different from me. He is relentlessly positive, upbeat, excited to be around this ‘celebrity’. He is in awe of Nikolaj. Can’t say the same.”
Inspired by a 1909 exhibition led to disprove US claims to northeastern Greenland, the film sees Cole as Iver P. Iversen, an inexperienced mechanic who joins Danish explorer Ejnar Mikkelsen (Coster-Waldau) on his journey. Later, he becomes his only companion after their crew leaves them behind.
“We were sure we wanted to shoot on location,” added Coster-Waldau. “First of all, it looks much better, but also for selfish reasons.

Sony's 'Universe of Marvel Characters' including the currently shooting "Spider-Man" spin-off "Morbius", opening July 31, 2020, will be followed by a "Venom" sequel, plus stand-alone "Kraven The Hunter", "Silver Sable", "Nightwatch", "Silk", "Jackpot" and "The Black Cat" features:
"We have the next seven or eight years laid out as to what we’re going to do with that asset", said Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tony Vinciquerra about the studio's "Spider-Man" spin-off movie rights.
"And that will not only be on the film side -- it’ll be on the TV side as well. Our television group will have its own set of characters from within that universe that we will seek to develop."
"'Spider-Man' connects to a lot of characters," said Sanford Panitch, President of Columbia Pictures. "There are villains, heroes, anti-heroes, and a lot are female characters, many of whom are bona fide, fully dimensionalized and unique..."

Following the release of "Venom" October 2018, feature film adaptations in development, based on "Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters", will also include "Silk", "Black Cat" and a whole lot more, "...focused on being faithful to the comics...", said Sanford Panitch, President of Columbia Pictures:

You can go ahead and add Sergei Kravinoff’s name to the list of Spider-Man villains destined for the big screen.
Collider is reporting today that Richard Wenk (The Equalizer 2) has climbed aboard to hash out a script for Kraven the Hunter, which looks set to become the latest Sony-backed Spidey spinoff alongside Venom, Silk, Silver & Black, Nightwatch and the Jared Leto-fronted vampire movie, Morbius.
All of these projects are currently hinging on Venom‘s potential success – or lack thereof – as Sony Pictures may well be staring down the face of a Dark Universe-like situation come October where their franchise-starter flops spectacularly, only to raise serious question marks over future installments.
But that’s the glass-half-empty scenario; Sony is beginning to develop a Kraven the Hunter movie sans Spider-Man, who is still tied up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That leaves Wenk facing the somewhat difficult...

We’re getting the first look at Nightwatch Nation, an expansion of A&E’s Nightwatch docuseries from executive producer Dick Wolf and 44 Blue Productions, a Red Arrow Studios company.
Nightwatch Nation follows EMTs in Yonkers, New York; Austin, Texas; Tucson, Arizona; and Baton Rouge, Louisiana as these real-life heroes risk their lives to work the busiest and most unnerving shift of the day, the overnight.
The 10-episode series follows EMTs as they tackle emergencies on every level, bringing viewers along for the ride while also experiencing the high intensity environment of the call centers. The series follows EMTs as they treat a stroke victim in Yonkers and a heroin overdose in Baton Rouge. They also are faced with a malfunctioning internal defibrillator in Tucson and a six-car pile-up that requires multiple ambulances in Austin.

I’ve gotta hand it to Sony Pictures, as they really seem committed to their strange Spidey-verse. Not only do we have this fall’s Venom, but there’s Spike Lee’s Nightwatch and the slightly delayed Silver & Black coming, too.
Still, they surprised everyone with the late June announcement that they’d snagged Jared Leto for the title role in Morbius, with Safe House and Life director Daniel Espinosa set to helm. The news was particularly shocking as Leto’s already The Joker in Warner Bros’ Dceu and had been expected to reprise the role in various sequels – which are apparently still going ahead (though I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t).
Right now, Morbius remains an unknown quantity, although a new casting call may shed a bit of light on the film’s broad strokes. Ths is reporting that the movie will pit Morbius against...

Perhaps appropriate for a film that seemingly revolves around two characters fusing together to become a third, Venom has rolled out a pair of HD pics – one for Eddie Brock, and the other for his inky-black alien symbiote.
Arriving by way of Entertainment Weekly as part of the outlet’s ongoing Comic-Con preview (Godzilla! Doctor Who! Fantastic Beasts!), below you’ll see Tom Hardy’s down-on-his-luck reporter, Eddie Brock, being interrogated by Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) of the Life Foundation. The other pic is presumably pulled from the moment when Brock becomes infected by the alien parasite, before unleashing chaos upon anyone who dares get in his way.
And best of all? Both characters will be voiced and performed by Tom Hardy, and director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), for one, is a big believer in the actor’s dual performance:

Pending some final negotiations, Jared Leto is on the verge of embracing his darker side for Morbius, the Living Vampire.
It’s the fifth Spider-Man spinoff to be announced by Sony Pictures, and will soon join Venom, Silver & Black, Silk and the embryonic Nightwatch movie within the studio’s Marvel Universe.
Daniel Espinosa of Life fame is attached to direct this one, and we’ve since learned that Morbius, a story which revolves around doomed biochemist Dr. Michael Morbius, won’t affect Leto’s previous engagements to the DC Extended Universe – those Joker projects are as safe as houses, then – and, frankly, it’s shaping up to be a totally different film compared to Sony’s other Spidey spinoffs.
How do we know? Well, for one, Jared Leto has already alluded to 2013 Marvel Max series The Man Called Morbius from writer Joe Keating, all but confirming the pic’s gothic leanings.

Jared Leto is Morbius, the Living Vampire, pending some final negotiations.
Deadline broke the news earlier today that Leto, best known for Suicide Squad, Dallas Buyers Club and being the frontman of 30 Seconds to Mars, is prepared to spearhead Sony’s latest Spider-Man spinoff with Daniel Espinosa (Life) on directing duties.
We know the studio is plotting its own Marvel universe with characters like Venom, Nightwatch, Silk and the long-in-development Silver & Black movie, and it all begins with the launch of Eddie Brock’s solo film this October.
But for those worried that Jared Leto’s involvement in Morbius will affect his ongoing commitment to the DC Extended Universe and its many Joker-related projects – namely Joker and Harley Quinn and Warner’s newfangled solo movie, not to be confused with the Todd Phillips-directed offshoot that has Joaquin Phoenix attached to star – Variety has published a follow-up report that ought to allay any fears.

Sony Pictures is developing a film based on another Spider-Man character. That character is Cindy Moon a.k.a. Silk! That's right! The Korean-American Marvel heroine is going to get her own film!
Silk is a fan favorite character that was created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos and she made her comic book debut in 2014 in The Amazing Spider-Man vol. 3 #1. For those of you not familiar with the character, here's a little background information:
Thirteen years ago, during a demonstration on the use of radioactive rays at a science exhibit, a spider was accidentally exposed to the radiation and absorbed large amounts of it. In its dying moments, the arachnid bit the nearest living thing to it, Peter Parker. As a result, the young teenager would gain amazing powers and become the amazing Spider-Man!However, this was not the end; as mere moments after biting Parker, the spider bites...

Sony is developing “Silk,” from Sony’s universe of Marvel-licensed characters about Korean-American heroine Cindy Moon, an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.
Amy Pascal is producing.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word today that Silver & Black has been yanked off Sony’s calendar, and will no longer make its initial February 8th, 2019 release date.
It’s a disappointing, if unsurprising update from the studio’s fledgling Marvel Universe, which is due to flicker into life this October thanks to Ruben Fleischer’s Venom.
For Silver & Black, we know The Secret Life of Bees filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood is at the helm for this one, having helped penned the script alongside Lindsey Beer. Though the fact that no casting announcements had been made led many to conclude that the female-fronted spinoff would be delayed sooner rather than later. “Black Panther” filmmaker Ryan Coogler has made no bones about his affection for fellow director Spike Lee’s sprawling filmography, including using a post-screening Q&A of his own boundary-breaking Marvel film to heap praise on both Lee’s “Malcolm X” and “Do the Right Thing,” and now the Brooklyn mainstay is returning the favor. During an hour-long conversation at the Tribeca Film Festival on Tuesday evening, Lee was asked by an audience member if he’d seen Coogler’s film and what he thought of it.
“I loved it! My brother, I’ve seen it four times,” Lee answered. (Lee just so happened to be in attendance at that same screening where Coogler named his most influential films, so we’ve long known he’d seen the film at least once.)
Lee continued, “I will say, I look at the world now differently, before ‘Black Panther’ and after ‘Black Panther.

It looks like Spike Lee might be jumping in on the comic book movie train. According to THR, the filmmaker is looking to direct a feature film adaptation of Marvel's Nightwatch for Sony Pictures.
It was rumored about six months ago that Sony was looking to develop the project and it looks like it's become something they are serious about doing. According to the report, Lee's involvement is early at this point, but he could potentially direct it.
The script for the film is being written by Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. Nightwatch is a lesser known Marvel character and has only made a small number of appearances in the comics. He had his own comic in the 90s but it didn't last long because, as you can see, the character looked way too similar to Spawn. Here are the details on the origin of the character:

He had his own comic in the 90s but it didn't last long because, as you can see, the character looked way too similar to Spawn. Here are the details on the origin of the character:

It looks like Sony is enlisting filmmaker Spike Lee to help with their extended Spider-Man Universe.
With Spider-Man fighting Thanos over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony is utilizing their Marvel rights as much as possible, with films based on Spider-Man side characters. One such character is the little-known hero called Nightwatch. And The Hollywood Reporter is saying that veteran filmmaker Spike Lee is the man assigned to adapting “Nightwatch” for the big screen.

Harlem’s Hero for Hire is gearing up for a darker, action-packed second season.
At least, that’s according to Luke Cage‘s leading man, Mike Colter, who spoke to the Comic Book Men (h/t Bleeding Cool) in anticipation of season 2’s premiere later this year – June 22nd, to be specific, when showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker (Nightwatch?) and Co. will be serving up another 13 episodes based on Marvel’s famous Power Man.
And after clashing with Cottonmouth (real name: Cornell Stokes) and the ice-cool Shades, not to mention Harlem’s crooked councilwoman, Mariah Dillard, it seems Cage is ready to square off against new threats – both human and otherwise.
A lot more badassery. A lot more fighting. I’m going to be squared off against a lot of people. So, it’s going to be fun.
