There was a moment in Japanese culture when writers and filmmakers began to update centuries-old fears so that they could still be effective storytelling tools in the modern world. One of the best examples of this is how extremely popular stories like Ringu and Parasite Eve began re-interpreting the cyclical nature of curses as pseudo-scientific “infections,” with this new take on J-Horror even making its way over to the world of video games in titles like Resident Evil (a sci-fi deconstruction of a classic haunted house yarn).
However, there is one survival horror game that is rarely brought up during discussions about interactive J-Horror despite being part of a franchise that helped to popularize Japanese genre cinema around the world. Naturally, that game is the Nintendo Wii exclusive Ju-On: The Grudge, a self-professed haunted house simulator that was mostly forgotten by horror fans and gamers alike despite being a legitimately...

A hospital in the decommissioning process–housing only a skeleton staff and a few patients–receives an ambulance call, which gives no alternative other than to drop off an extremely ill man. When the person arrives, the hospital staff finds a bandaged body constantly oozing a thick green discharge. As the night goes on, it seems to affect the body and mind of those at the hospital, and they transform into violent zombies.
Coming up on Halloween, it was hard not to go with a horror movie, and one that certainly deserves more fanfare is Masayuki Ochiai’s 2004 film “Infection.” An entertaining mix of body horror and supernatural mystery, Masayuki Ochiai makes up for the limited budget by crafting ghastly moments of horror and disgust, like grabbing a handful from the needle dispensary. Moreover, “Infection” leaves much up to interpretation, and the source of the madness that overcomes the hospital...

I’m a big RPG fan now, but that wasn’t always the case. Super Mario RPG introduced me to the genre, but, like many people my age, Final Fantasy VII was the one that wowed me the most. After Final Fantasy VII, I was hungry for more, and Square’s next RPG was one that was surprisingly up my alley. Trading a traditional fantasy setting that usually comes with the genre for a Resident Evil-style bio-horror plot, Parasite Eve immediately grabbed me with its compelling setup and clever twist on the Ffvii battle system. Even now, 25 years after the initial Japanese release of Parasite Eve, I’m hard pressed to think of an RPG that feels as unique and striking as the PlayStation classic.
Parasite Eve is a sequel to the Japanese novel of the same name by novelist and pharmacologist Hideaki Sena. The game, produced by Hironobu Sakaguchi...

Square Enix
Square Enix (Formerly Squaresoft) are one of the biggest game developers and publishers in the world. They are responsible for games that regularly top lists devoted to the greatest games of this world and yet, recently, their stock has been on the decline.
Their games are dropping in quality.
Even major franchise Final Fantasy has had the lowest ratings the series has ever received and finally, only in the last few days, they trolled the world with the apparent remake of Final Fantasy VII on PS4 being nothing more but a HD PC port. How many of you were genuinely annoyed at this? Be honest.
But how many know and remember just how important Square are to the industry? Especially the Jrpg industry?
Since that remarkable merger with Enix in 2003, Square – now known as Square Enix – purchased Eidos in 2009 and absorbed an enormous amount of games. You have...

Here's our pick of the top 50 underappreciated PlayStation One games for the console that changed home gaming as we know it...
Sony's original PlayStation was launched in Japan in 1994, hitting the rest of the world in 1995, and it proceeded to revolutionise the console market. It took a pastime that was seen as exclusive to geeks and children, and turned it into a true mainstream phenomenon. PlayStation made gaming 'cool', and it brought with it a huge catalogue of games, introducing us to all-time classics like Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, Wipeout, Resident Evil and many, many more.
However, for all the critically and publicly acclaimed titles the unit had, it also had a whole selection of underappreciated releases. Some of these are titles that may not be for everybody, but still offer superb entertainment to many, and others are simply great, but failed to shine due...
