CANNES -- As the competitive section got under way Thursday, organizers took festival watchers by surprise when they moved the documentary Mondovino, directed by American Jonathan Nossiter (Sunday), into a Competition slot. "We want to stay light and supple," Cannes artistic director Thierry Fremaux said. "It's like a filmmaker who puts the finishing touches to his movie right up to the last minute -- we're doing the same thing with the lineup." Fremaux firmly denied a Croisette rumor that Mondovino had been promoted because the other documentary In Competition, Michael Moore's highly anticipated Fahrenheit 9/11, was accepted unseen and has turned out to be disappointing.
