Poor Things, Oppenheimer and Saltburn won Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Awards in the categories for fantasy, period and contemporary live action features, respectively, at the 28th Adg Awards, which were handed out Saturday at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.
Poor Things and Oppenheimer are additionally nominated for the Oscar in production design, alongside Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, which were also Adg nominated in their respective categories.
Over the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film prize has gone on to win the Oscar for production design twice: In 2020, for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2021, for Mank. During that time, the production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category twice, in 2019, for Black Panther, and 2022, for Dune. Production design Oscar nominees “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” “Napoleon” all competed for the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards February 10 at Ovation Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. “Poor Things” prevailed over “Barbie” for fantasy, and is now in the driver’s seat to win the Oscar. Throughout the season, it has been a race between these two big feminist films constructed around rebirth and unconventional world-building.
Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” took period honors over “Asteroid City,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Napoleon.” Contemporary winner “Saltburn,” though, is not in the Oscar running. The animated feature winner was “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
The TV winners for one-hour period, fantasy, and contemporary were “The Great,” “The Last of Us,” and “Succession.” Movie or limited series went to “Beef,” and the half-hour series winner was “Reservation Dogs.”

“Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” “Saltburn,” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” have won the top feature-film awards at the 28th annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards, which were held on Saturday in Hollywood.
“Oppenheimer” won for period film, “Poor Things” for fantasy, “Saltburn” for contemporary and “Spider-Man” for animated film.
“Poor Things” was considered a bit of a surprise winner given that “Barbie” was also nominated the category, and winners Shona Heath and James Price said in their acceptance speech that they were not expecting the win. The victory might put them closer to a victory at next month’s Oscars, where “Poor Things” has 11 nominations.
In the television categories, awards went to “Succession,” “The Great,” “Reservation Dogs,” “The Last of Us,” “Beef,” “Frasier,” “Squid Game: The Challenge,” and the 80th Golden Globe Awards ceremony. The first three titles were honored for their final seasons on TV.

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were among the winners at the 28th Annual Art Director’s Guild Awards which took place in Hollywood on Saturday evening.
Hosted by Max Greenfield, the Adg Awards celebrated outstanding production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, animated features and music videos.
“Poor Things” production designers Shona Heath and James Price drew visual references ranging from the paintings of French futurist Albert Robida to Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula” to build Yorgos Lanthimos’ extraordinary sets.
In “Oppenheimer,” Ruth De Jong built Los Alamos from the ground up. But her most challenging task came when she had to build the Oval Office for the film’s third act. Working with supervising art director, Samantha Englander, the two had floated the idea of finding a pre-existing build of the Oval Office. U2 frontman Bono co-wrote a whodunnit film way back in 2000 called "The Million Dollar Hotel," but 23 years later, he has made his return to the world of movies -- and the result is unexpectedly gorgeous.
This past October, Max released a short film called "Peter and the Wolf," a new adaptation of Sergei Prokofiev's symphonic classic which Bono not only wrote, but he also created the artwork on which the film was based. Not bad for a rock star. This story has been adapted for the screen numerous times, but it's never looked as striking as it does here. The broad strokes of the narrative are the same as you might remember, and composer/narrator Gavin Friday's musical riff on the familiar motifs may whisk you back to hearing these tunes in your childhood, but the visuals are what stand out the most here.

Rarely if ever has a show spun away from its source material as creatively and consistently as "Fargo." Across the FX show's five seasons and counting, "Fargo" has changed locations, casts, and plotlines time after time, keeping only a few core tenets: a teasing love of all things Midwestern, a knack for pitch-black comedy and startling violence, and a coterie of familiar character archetypes including the smarter-than-average small-town cop and the near-superpowered killer.
These elements originated with Joel and Ethan Coen's 1996 film of the same name, from which "Fargo" has at times pulled threads of its plot or recreated scenes -- always with a twist, as when two assassins came for housewife Dot (Juno Temple) in the latest season. Yet by now, "Fargo" has become a true anthology, stringing together largely unrelated season-long arcs and creating a rich world all its own.

For Migration, composer John Powell was tasked with creating a theme for a reluctant hero that evolves throughout his journey. Written and directed by Benjamin Renner, Migration follows a family of ducks on a new journey. Mack (Kumail Nanjiani) is a mallard who is content with never leaving the safety of his pond, until his wife Pam (Elizabeth Banks) convinces him that their children need to see the world. Setting their sights on Jamaica, Mack takes his family on a trip south that quickly goes wrong. As they overcome new challenges and meet new friends, the family discovers they are capable of much more than they thought. As Mack’s attitude towards migrating changes throughout the film, Powell’s theme for the character became grander to match his growth.

Max’s new animated short, “Peter & the Wolf” (now streaming), turns the beloved folktale and Sergei Prokofiev symphony into a Gothic re-invention about grief and environmental protection. It’s about 12-year-old Peter who lives with his grandfather and explores a vast meadow and forest to find a wolf — with the help of some animals — while fending off hunters.
Based on the 2003 book by Irish musician/composer Gavin Friday (with illustrations by Bono) and accompanying CD with The Friday-Seezer Ensemble, the 30-minute black-and-white short animates the characters in 2D. They contain a rough, hand-of-the-artist aesthetic, bolstered by miniature sets to complete the monochromatic, hybrid look.
It’s produced by Adriana Piasek-Wanski for BMG and Blink Industries and directed by Elliot Dear and Stephen McNally. Coinciding with the short, there’s a new edition of the book along with a new release of the score and a theme song by Friday...

"If we look closer, what we find in the darkness might surprise us..." Max has unveiled an official trailer for an animated short film streaming this fall called Peter and The Wolf. Yes, another version of this classic story, this time coming from the mind of U2's Bono. Featuring music and narration by Gavin Friday, and artwork based on original illustrations by Bono. After the success of Apple's The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse, everyone is trying to make more films like this. The short transforms Sergei Prokofiev's classic symphony into a film that touches on themes of growing up, loss, courage, and our relationship with nature. The project was originally developed back in 2003 by Gavin Friday and Bono in support of Irish Hospice Foundation (Ihf), a national charity supporting those facing dying, death and bereavement. 30 years later they've got a final version ready.

It certainly isn’t true to how history really happened, but “The Great” is one of the most inventive, entertaining series out there right now. Billed by Hulu alternately as “an occasionally true story” and “an almost entirely untrue story,” it takes the real-life relationship between Catherine the Great and Peter III and twists it into something that makes for maddeningly watchable comedy and drama. Season 3 begins with a new reality for Catherine and Peter as they examine how their marriage can work with the empress in power and Russia’s former leader by her side, and things only get wilder and more chaotic from there.
“The Great” has not received the warmest reception from Emmy voters, with six nominations total and just one win over the course of its first two seasons. The pilot episode was cited for directing and writing, and Season 1 merited a production design mention. Lead...

In Club Zero, the students of a radical nutrition class are taught the benefits of eating consciously––if they choose to eat at all. It’s the latest film from Austrian director Jessica Hausner, whose 2019 sci-fi drama Little Joe showed a similar level of concern for the things we put into our bodies. Club Zero is less a cautionary tale about eating disorders than a satire on environmental anxieties, extreme activism, and the sometimes-competitive nature of those who get swept up in it. That’s a tasty premise, but Hausner’s take is frankly a cynical one and, much like the plate of vomit that dominated headlines after the film’s premiere last week in Cannes, it leaves a bad taste in one’s mouth.
On the plus side, Club Zero welcomes the elusive Mia Wasikowska back to the screen. And as anyone who has watched her over the years can attest,...

This article contains major spoilers for season 3 of "The Great."
Empress Catherine (Elle Fanning) has been through her fair share of grief on the Hulu semi-historical dramedy "The Great," but season 3 sees her trying to endure what might be her most profound heartbreak yet following the accidental and sudden death of her husband Peter (Nicholas Hoult). She's not the only one feeling the loss, however, as his aunt Elizabeth (Belinda Bromilow) and his best friend Grigor (Gwilym Lee) must also contend with the loss of the most important person in their lives. In episode 8, "Peter and the Wolf," news of Peter's death has finally reached the court and Catherine can no longer pretend that he's fine and she simply imagined his death, which means that everyone has to process the loss of the court's biggest, loudest personality.
The episode is split into three parts, with each dedicated to following one of the grieving individuals.

Warner Bros. Discovery disappointed the children’s TV industry last year when it pulled a number of shows from HBO Max, signaling an exit from this part of the business.
However, now, with the launch of the rebranded Max service, the company behind the Looney Tunes and Hanna-Barbera libraries is returning strong to the sector and admitting that it was ostensibly technical difficulties that caused some of its problems for younger folk.

From the creators of the award-winning podcast Out There comes Once Upon a Meadow. Launching February 7, this innovative program for 4- to 9-year-olds features fictional tales about a community of animals and plants who work together to flourish, despite their differences.
“In today’s fractious times, we need uplifting stories that help children learn to compromise and treat others with respect,” said Jeff Lockwood, an ecologist and the writer-narrator of the stories.
In the tradition of Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” each story includes original music by internationally acclaimed composer and pianist Nadav Amir-Himmel. Willow Belden, a former public radio journalist, host of Out There, and producer of Once Upon a Meadow, says the team sought to model the world they hope to create. “For example, Rabbit is nonbinary but doesn’t face discrimination,” Belden said. “In fact, we don’t draw attention to Rabbit’s gender at all.

Few filmmakers have a more distinctive take on the world than Wes Anderson. Many of his contemporaries -- David O. Russell, Darren Aronofsky, Spike Jonze, et al. -- are extraordinary filmmakers, but it's only with Anderson that you can look at a single frame -- any frame -- and instantly know that it's his. And the same is true of his latest, "Moonrise Kingdom," which marks his return to live-action filmmaking for the first time in five years.
The film was very well received when it opened the Cannes Film Festival last week (including our A-grade review), and we caught up with Anderson at the fest to talk about the new film, which stars Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, Harvey Keitel, Jason Schwartzman, and newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward. Mild spoilers may be ahead, just to warn you, but as the film goes on release this Friday,...

Horses as life-size puppets? The wrong soldier executed? Michael Morpurgo has had to challenge his own preconceptions when seeing his books adapted for stage or screen. But with Spielberg's War Horse film forthcoming and The Rainbow Bear a ballet, he's getting used to good surprises
To me it's all storytelling. After centuries of stories dominated by the written word, we may sometimes forget that, for many generations before, the telling of stories was almost entirely an oral tradition, with a little help from travelling players and singers and bands. These storytellers adapted, reinvented and recreated all the time, to reflect changing times and tastes.
As a maker of stories, originally written for the readers of books, I am always alert to the possibilities of finding new and inventive ways of telling them, of bringing them to a wider audience. To begin with, I never imagined anyone would think of adapting...

Sergei Prokofiev's Russian fairy tale from 1936 Peter and the Wolf is next to get the modern treatment, and as any true fan of fairy tales can tell you, they are certainly not the kind of bedtime fodder you would want your kids diggin' on. Unless of course you're like us and want to bring your buggers up the right way by letting them cut their teeth on the macabre!
According to Bloody Disgusting the good folks behind The Invasion and Blood Creek, Madhouse Entertainment, are currently working up a new telling of the classic tale that will definitely be spending its time exploring the darker avenues of the story.
"In order to save the love of his life and confront his own past, Peter, with the help of two very unlikely allies, sets out to trap a cunning serial killer who has returned to the college town he once terrorized.

As I mentioned yesterday, the Very Important Date of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (EW gives it a C) has me revisiting the 1985 TV version of the film. Here's one of my favorite clips, featuring Sammy Davis Jr. as the hookah-smoking caterpillar. He'll kick you downstairs...into the deep, dark recesses of your memories from 1985. Don't worry -- I'll give equal treatment to Ringo Starr as the mock turtle, Carol Channing as the White Queen, and even John Stamos as the messenger during the next week! Watching this as an adult is so weird. So many questions. Was every...

This Sunday, the Grammy Awards will be given out for the 52nd time. Over their lifespan, nearly 8,000 tiny Victrolas have been given out to all manner of artists. This weekend's show is one of the more youth-driven and star-studded in recent memory, with Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Dave Matthews Band and the Black Eyed Peas among others performing and competing for awards.
No awards show gets it right every single time, and considering the number of awards they hand out every year, Grammy Awards history is littered with bizarre winners and strange victors. Take a look below at some of the more unusual names with Grammys on their shelves (some of whom have multiple victories). And this list doesn't even count the head-scratching upsets (like Steely Dan winning Album of the Year in 2001).

Sergei Prokofiev's children's symphony Peter And The Wolf has been adapted to film and television multiple times, and has become such a common part of elementary-school curricula that it hardly seems worth revisiting the piece yet again. But there's never been a Peter And The Wolf like Suzie Templeton's Oscar-winning 2006 short. It isn't just that Templeton's Peter is a little darker than most; it also adds a layer of thematic depth that's about more than identifying which instrument represents which character. Opening with a lengthy silent sequence—and eschewing narration throughout its 30-minute running time—Templeton's "Peter & The Wolf" makes its Russian setting more paramount, emphasizing the hardscrabble existence of the adventurous Peter and his overprotective grandfather. This Peter wears an expression of burned-in resentment over his lot in life, though during the time he spends frolicking with his animal friends in the woods, Peter comes to realize that.
