Devoid of pretensions, THE DENTAL NURSES is a charming example of low-brow porn, designed merely to entertain the hardcore fans and achieving its modest goal. IMDb has recently given Richard Mailer credit for directing.
The humor is deadpan, finding comedy in the incongruity of sex in a dental office setting. It's a diversion from the usual extremes of vintage porn, which usually are heavy going in "artistic" projects vs. the mindlessness of the 1-day all-sex wonders.
Opening sex scene sets the stage, as lovely Joan Devlon is in Tyler Reynolds' dental chair, receiving some "new medicine" in the form of an ejaculation in the mouth. The way this is directed by "Miles del Monte", or Mailer, and acted is disarming. My only quibble is that Devlon, a personal favorite of mine among porn starlets, does not disrobe -quite a waste for her fans.
Reynolds' title nurse (there's only one, not the plural used in the moniker) Veronica Taylor and his receptionist Susan Catherine join in the sex action throughout, and are both a treat. Catherine looks like Kate Hudson, and I'm going to check out her other films after watching this one, particularly LITTLE ANGEL PUSS, featuring much of the same cast.
Film's best segment for me starred an unknown actress as a housewife who gives up Tyler's "services", even canceling an appointment, after sampling the wares of her grocery boy Ken Scudder. The unidentified performer is not pretty (her nose looks flattened in profile, and she has bad teeth to boot) but is sexy as all get out, boasting huge natural breasts, pretty nipples and an uninhibited personality. Scudder does a double penetration on her using cucumber and carrot, and her fellatio footage is wisely stretched by the filmmakers to last during most of the film.
Other segments take place at the dental office, which oddly enough (but not for porn) features a room with a large mattress on the floor, used for two orgies in later reels. Dianne Galke guest stars as an emergency patient with an apple caught in her mouth, brought to the office by two guys wearing Halloween masks (Dashile Miguele and Al Russo). Not to worry, they doff their masks and join in the orgies, not meaning to rob or assault anyone. Both Jones and Desiree West (not one of her better showcases, however) are present for mixed-combo action.
Lack of real content (the film resembles stag films at times in its "sex is just around the corner" scripting) causes the movie to drag a bit by the final reels, but it is entertaining nonetheless.
Oddest touch, per IMDb, is script credited to an award-winning sound editor (Lou Kleinman), whose range of real films is pretty amazing, beginning with THE EVIL DEAD and including everything from BRAVEHEART to THE BOURNE IDENTITY. His rare dalliance with porn (I also have a copy of his other XXX movie WHEN A WOMAN CALLS to watch) is a winner.
