Massachusetts has a reputation for the freaky that can be mainly credited to the Salem witch trials, the deadly miscarriage of justice that spawned gift shops that will outlive us all.
But strange things have been afoot all across the state that don’t necessarily get as much shine—unless you count the flesh-like shine coming off an owl’s white feathers that a skeptic posited as an explanation for a Massachusetts monster sighting.
The Dover Demon is likely the most well-known Massachusetts cryptid. It is a strange enough creature that its memory prevails even though it was only spotted a handful of times. Throughout three nights in late April 1977, witnesses encountered a figure with peachy-pale skin, a somewhat figure-8-shaped head, and a distended belly. The figure was sometimes on all fours, sometimes leaning back against a tree, and had seemingly opposable fingers and toes.

Garbage have shared the new video for “The Creeps,” a track off the band’s recently released album No Gods No Monsters.
Like the previous visuals for album tracks “Wolves” and “The Men Who Rule the World,” “The Creeps” was directed by Chilean film director, animator, and painter Javi.MiAmor. Like those videos, “The Creeps” combines footage of singer Shirley Manson with a hodgepodge of frenetic animation techniques.
“This is a record I was supposed to make,” Manson said of the album in a statement. “Lord only knows what the fans will think,...

Update: An actress who is accused of stabbing her mother to death told law enforcement officials that she acted in self-defense, according to court records cited by the Kansas City Star.
Mollie Maxine Fitzgerald, who appeared as “Stark Girl” in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, claimed that her mother tried to kill her during a call to 911 to report the stabbing.
So far, no evidence has suggested that the knife found sticking in the mother’s back was ever under her control. Fitzgerald has said she intends to represent herself in the case.
Fitzgerald was treated at a hospital for minor cuts and a bite mark on her arm. An autopsy showed that her mother had what were termed “defensive wounds” and bruising that indicated choking.
Fitzgerald remains imprisoned on a second-degree murder charge. She is expected back in court on Jan. 29.

Not much more than a group of actors sat round in a Romanian castle (the very same one owned by Charles Band that featured in Castle Freak no doubt) talking trash to each other, with the occasional appearance by a group of deformed “creatures”… that is the plot of Hideous! in a nutshell. Although the official synopsis goes something like this: “Dr. Lorca, an eccentric collector of biological oddities, has just acquired his greatest specimen; a horrible mutant born of noxious waste… but the creature’s rightful owner wants it back. The collector’s clash is cut short though, as the sickening specimen comes to life, re-animating an angry, oozing little army of ferocious freaks.”

I’ll be honest, The Creeps originally came at a time when, beyond the Puppet Master movies, I had grown tired of Full Moon’s schtick… Having moved the studio to Romania, their production values were falling, casting choices were resulting in some truly wooden performances and worst of all their films were getting more and more ridiculous, with gimmicks replacing decent stories. Case in part, The Creeps.
Released in 1997, The Creeps – at least on paper – sounds utterly ridiculous, even for a Full Moon flick, and it’s easy to see why I avoided it for so long. The film is essentially a redux of the “mad scientist” story we’ve seen a million times before – itself a movie archetype as much as the classic monsters who are the heroes of...
