Sonia Braga and Betty Faria have publicly clashed over their respective portrayals of Tieta. Braga was close to Jorge Amado and had requested the rights for a "Tieta" movie before this series was conceived. Production then had to be delayed after Faria bought the rights first to television. Faria has publicly reclaimed the role and stated that Braga "never asked for her permission [or "blessing"] to portray Tieta on film, which was awful". Braga deemed Faria's comments "unnecessary".
