I saw this one as Dearly Devoted, not the most impressive title but unlike the original name of Devil in the Flesh, it doesn't have the sound of a porno about it. This is just about OK stuff but is painfully predictable from start to finish, existing in the sort of territory that has been so well trodden over the years that the only way to squeeze success out of it is with invention and outrage or high quality construction. This movie lacks either of the above, but it has its moments and best of all it has Rose McGowan in the lead role. She plays Debbie Strand, sent to live with her grandmother after a fire she soon falls for a dishy young creative writing teacher at her new school and, well you can guess the rest. Writers Kurt Anderson and Richard Brandes bring nothing new to the table and the direction is pretty perfunctory, there is one pretty neat and shocking scene but its nothing that hasn't been done before. Rose McGowan gives a fine, seductive and sinister turn as Debbie, she looks like the kind of lady who could pull off such a role in her sleep but that doesn't stop her from being pretty great at it. As the object of her affections Alex McArthur is fairly likable, he has a certain easy charm and draw to him that makes what befalls mildly plausible, whilst more amusement is provided by Peg Shirley, vigorously mean and crotchety as Debbies grandma. The biggest problem is that the film is simply too slow, the first half gives barely any indication that the film is supposed to be some kind of a thriller and is enlivened mainly by a bit of sex and brief nudity. When things do hot up the film is predictable, but is at least daft fun, engaging situations that bask in the amusingly daft, building gracefully towards a comical facepalm of a ridiculous finale, somewhat expected but still pretty darned funny. On the whole this is a fairly bad film mostly enlivened by its star who is more than magnetic enough to keep things amply bearable. Its vacantly watchable for the most part, has some efficient kicks when it finally gets going and at least packs one maybe two memorable sequences. Fans of this kind of teen oriented fodder may like it more, discerning viewers will almost certainly like it far less, but I wasn't too displeased even though it didn't leave me thinking it was a good film. Not terrible but approach with caution I say.
