Pursued by a no-doubt-adoring, gangling Olivier Assayas...
nunculus23 August 2000
...Hou Hsiao-hsien walks around his native Taiwan and conveys the historicizing and sociological imperatives of his movies. What's cool is that he's much more of a gum-chewing tough guy and a strutting cock than his films would let on. Like Hou's work, Assayas' documentary feels anthropology-seminar-like, smarter than one is used to, and very nearly eternal.
