Resembling porno's version of a one-act play, "Steamy Windows" is a relatively unsung achievement in director Paul Thomas's career - a gimmick film that really works. Of course, it benefits immensely from terrific acting by Ashlyn Gere, before the show moves into all-sex territory.
She and hubby Steve Drake are a married couple of lawyers, moving into an apartment they bought strictly on her say-so. She's domineering and a totally dislikable character, but in Gere's hands it's something arresting to watch, then balanced by her animalistic whole-hearted plunge into sexual abandon.
The brief story summary in IMDb avoids spoilers by misconstruing the screenplay. This is hardly a story about swinging or sexy neighbors; other than a non-sex role of the lady (uncredited) who gives the couple their condo contract, all the other players are ghosts. As a lightning storm ranges outside, the couple begin to see what seem to be hallucinations of people having sex reflected in their huge picture window (they're on an upper floor of a high-rise building).
At first it's just a couple: Nick East and Roxanne Blaze humping away. Drake can't take his eyes off of them, and then they appear in Gere's bedroom, causing our star voyeuse to masturbate before imagining that she can join them in a threesome (only briefly) before they disappear.
Later, Drake sees group sex reflected and as his and Gere's fears rise, crashes the plate glass, allowing the star couple to enter into the fray. Last half of the movie is an extended orgy, Drake and Gere fully integrated into the ghosts' sex acts, leading to a surprise shock ending skilfully executed.
