Maurice De Canonge was not always a drudge ,and some of his movies are interesting ("grisou' "les trois tambours" "l'homme de la Jamaïque") but the bulk of his work is undistinguished.

The remake of "au pays du soleil" ,an operetta with plenty of songs ,is another vehicle for bel canto singer Tino Rossi. His fans will rejoice in the presence of songs which became classics ("le plus beau de tous les tangos du monde" " Ma Venise provençale")and many others (including the title song,"Miette" and "j'ai rêvé d'une fleur" )

Plot:Titin and Francis were schoolmates: but whereas Titin (Rossi) has followed the straight and narrow, Francis has opted for "the wrong side of the street ",doing very bad things , involved in smuggling: in Marseille ,it's an easy way to make big money .Titin is in love with Miette ,but she is wooed by a wealthy man who could be her father .So he must find a good job, but an honest one:he's virtuous and righteous .Would you believe it?He's accused of a murder committed by his low-life friend.

An operetta based on a film noir screenplay ,it's a rather stodgy brew .This dish should be reserved for the singer's fans.
