The Scrappy cartoons from Columbia Studios from the early 1930s have been pretty much forgotten over the years. While better cartoons came along later, for its time, the Scrappy cartoons were great because they were so violent and full of sick imagery. Many parents would be horrified by Scrappy's antics...but I love them because they are funny--in an era when MOST of the cartoons were sickeningly sweet and wholesome!
The story begins with Yippy being caught by the evil dog catcher. But Scrappy isn't about to let his beloved pooch stay there and he springs into action.
Through the course of the film, Scrappy yanks a dog's skin off and uses it as a disguise (the dog was clearly killed in the process) and later he finds his way to the electric chair the dog catcher uses to dispatch the dogs! It's awful...but awfully funny as well. This combined with nice animation make this worth seeing.
By the way, if you want to watch the Scrappy shorts, stick with the earlier ones. Later, Scrappy was sanitized and made 'nice'....in other words, all the horrible (and funny) elements were removed.
