The mukhadaa at least was lifted 'in toto' from one of Olivia
Newton John numbers. Yes, it is the Swami song "Pal bhar me.n ye kyaa ho
gayaa...", music by Rajesh Roshan.
Swami was produced by Hema Malini's mother Jaya Chakravarty. Hema Malini and Dharmendra appear in a song in the movie. Jaya was keen on a match between Girish Karnad and Hema Malini and went on to produce Ratandeep with the two of them. Hema Malini was too deeply involved with Dharmendra and refused to consider anyone else.
First film to be screened at newly opened Satyam Sundaram Sachinam cinema in Mumbai.1979 film Suhaag had the song Mai Toh Beggar Hu shot here which shows film released at the theater is Swami.
Everyone kept telling Basu to cast Sanjeev Kumar in the lead role. He stated if he cast Sanjeev then the audience would have known he was the hero of the film and would have loved him from the start. The audience would have known that Saudamini would love him in the end. Girish was not well known then. The audience hated him but began to love him when Saudamini started loving him. That was why Swami's casting worked.
