1942 kicked off for Paul Terry with this Technicolor cartoon about Sour Puss. He falls in love with a Mexican senorita, but her father insists she will marry only a brave man, so Sour must fight a bull....
Paul Terry had produced this cartoon about a dozen times before this, mos recently in 1939's A BULLY ROMANCE with Gandy Goose. Each time I look at this story in a Terrytoon, the principal interest is the technical advances in cartooning technique. With this one, Technicolor is introduced to the mix, and it's mixed very poorly. In fact, the movie looks like it was produced and then had its color added in a let's-paint-this-area-cerulean-and-that-area-ocher mood, instead of the delicate watercolor techniques that Terry's staff had mastered.
The way the characters move is interesting. Sour Puss moves like a cat for a few seconds and the senorita's movements make it look like they had in a life model to work with. However, the seen-it-all-before nature of the story and gags, as well as the awful color effects dominate.
