Not enough good here
When Terrytoons hit their cartoons were pleasant enough and entertained, even if there were still story and pacing flaws and the characters variable. There were not many great cartoons of theirs, but there were enough that were decent and above average. When Terrytoons missed though, while not much of their work was awful (some of the early and late ones were though) they could be very mediocre and they had their fair share of weak cartoons.
1943's batch of Terrytoons cartoons ranged from mediocre to decent, and neither extremes of good (great) or bad (awful). Found 'Yokel Ducks Make Good' though to be one of the mediocre ones and one of the weakest of that year. It had some good things, but not enough and there are too many bad things. Was not very excited reading the premise as it did sound like it would be one of those depressingly unoriginal, too cute, dull and unfunny cartoons with good animation and music but also unappealing characters, and was proved correct on all counts.
As indicated, the animation and especially the music are the best assets. The animation quality had advanced so much and improved enormously from the late 30s or so onwards, the most improved component overtime by some way. It is nicely detailed, lively in drawing and with some lovely colours without being garish. Again, the music, the thing that was the most, and actually only, consistently good thing from the very beginning with Terrytoons, is a big strength. It is beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged, is terrific fun to listen to and the lively energy is present throughout, doing so well with adding to the action.
There are a few charming and mildly amusing moments but they come very sporadically. Synchronisation is neat and the villain is okay.
It is sad though that 'Yokel Ducks Makes Good's' story is paper thin (this story could have been done in perhaps a little over half the length of that here easily from personal view). It is also very dull from having a lot of padding and makes no real attempt to do anything new with a premise that had been very over-familiar for some time before, meaning it feels very stale and fatigued. Originally is zero, predictability is all over. There is some recyling and cutting corners here too in the gags, thought that Terrytoons had gone beyond that by now as that was a frequent problem early on with the gags and animation and happened significantly less over-time. Why get lazy now?
'Yokel Ducks Makes Good's' gags are far too few, and none of them are funny or memorable. None of them have any originality and it was clear that Terrytoons were running out of ideas and recycling old ones. It is such a shame that it put so much effort in a few assets like the animation and music and then the studio got lazy in the content and story departments, both of which hit and miss in their whole output. Got absolutely nothing out of the characters, they are instantly forgettable and none of them are likeable or interesting. The villain is the only semi-interesting character but his material is just too predictable for him to properly make a threatening impact.
One can't even root for the main character because he is just so bland, found him somewhat annoying as well. This should not have been the case because when done right the basic situation (being shunned and abused for for example being different from the rest) in this cartoon, and many others, is a very relatable one for me, went through it myself many times. Could see the ending from miles away and the very end is too pat and the tormenters' changes of hearts felt too rushed considering the extent of their nastiness.
Summing up, very mediocre and a one-time watch only for completest sake. 4/10
