A world of sports that could have been more wild
TheLittleSongbird27 June 2018
Love animation, it was a big part of my life as a child, particularly Disney, Looney Tunes, Hanna and Barbera and Tom and Jerry, and still love it whether it's film, television or cartoons. Actually appreciate it even more now through young adult eyes, thanks to broader knowledge and taste and more interest in animation styles and various studios and directors.

Chuck Jones deserved, and still deserves, to be considered one of the best, most legendary and most influential animation directors/animators. While not quite as distinctive in directing style as other directors from the same era, in his prime era he was responsible for some of the best cartoons ever made. Bugs Bunny is one of my favourite characters in animation and ever and Mel Blanc was one of the greatest voice actors ever.

'Bugs Bunny's Wild World of Sports' in no way sees either at their best very or the best representation. It is not bad at all though, if slightly too slight and episodic in story for the additional scenes, not to mention it's not an old idea at all and it's variable in inventiveness. It cannot be denied that a lot of nostalgia is evoked. A few moments of corny dialogue and some of the editing is a little choppy.

A lot of great things here. The animation has some brightness and colour with some inventive moments, if not always refinement with some of the drawing scrappy. If more in the classic cartoons than in the additional scenes. The music is lively enough and doesn't sound too cheap in the additional scenes, while being outstanding in orchestration and how it adds to and enhances the action in the featured cartoons.

Bugs is always worth watching, and that's an understatement, and he is still interesting and not out of character. Mel Blanc shows a mastery of bringing individuality to multiple characters that few others managed, a previous review mentioned him being the heart and soul of every cartoon and have to concur completely. The dialogue is sharp and witty and the gags are fast paced, beautifully timed and animated and very funny. Most of the characters are not wasted, Daffy is not at his very best but Bugs and Foghorn are particularly well done here.

The classic era cartoons featured are colourful and are amusing to hilarious, with great dialogue and gags and iconic characters not wasted at all (especially Bugs and Foghorn), they fit with the theme too, and like to love most of them. Though too many of them are on the too short side and a few are introduced and rounded off in a slightly jarring way (i.e. endings cut off for example), the material shown for a few are not even the highlights of those respective cartoons.

In conclusion, pretty decent. 7/10 Bethany Cox

not bad

Sometimes, it seems like Warner Bros. went a little overboard with cartoon compilations in the '70s and '80s. If so, then at least there were a limited number. "Bugs Bunny's Wild World of Sports" is passable. It portrays an awards ceremony where one of the Looney Tunes will take home a prize for his athletic performances in cartoons, which they show throughout the movie; Daffy Duck morosely assumes that the judges have already chosen Bugs Bunny.

If this movie has any problem, it's that they cut the cartoons short; why'd they have to remove the hilarious ends of "High Diving Hare" and "My Bunny Lies Over the Sea"? But even so, the movie is a nice, silly way to pass time, even for a non-athletic person like me.

On another note, I notice that this came out in 1989, which was the year that Mel Blanc died (he was in fact the first famous person whose death I was aware of). I wish to assert that they shouldn't have produced anything after his death; his voices were really the heart and soul of the cartoons.

Paavo Nurmi once said that NO human being . . .
oscaralbert14 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
. . . would EVER run six miles in less than thirty minutes, just because HE had tried to many times, and always failed. (Now, of course, each runner in the Lead Pack of any Major Men's Marathon Race easily accomplishes that feat back-to-back-to-back-to-back--plus 2.2 miles or one-third more than times four, ALL without ever stopping for rest!) I've personally tried to stay awake for EVERY MINUTE of that MGM exercise in Masochism for the Masses, GONE WITH THE WIND, and always failed, but that doesn't mean that I'd bet the farm that no one would EVER accomplish this dubious marathon effort! Warner Bros.' gang of perceptive Social Critics, the Looney Tuners of "Termite Palace," put Paavo "The Flying Finn" Nurmi in his place for his hubris by portraying a sound-alike lampooned version of him named "Pablo Nervy" as a quaking ski jumper (which is the ACTUAL national sport of Nurmi's native Finland) at the 1932 Lake Placid, NY, Winter Olympics, "conquering" a drop-off of about six inches! This all goes to prove that even in you hold 78 world track and road racing records, as did Nurmi, all you need to do is to slip up once and mouth off with a stupid remark, and the Looney Tuners will cut you down to size (even if it takes 54 years, until a compilation such as 1989's BUGS BUNNY'S WILD WORLD OF SPORTS). Just wait until these Cartooning Furies get wind of White House Resident-Elect Rump's ACCESS H0LLYWOOD tape!

Good one!

When this show was on I watched it every time I could! I thought that the characters were really funny and all had great personalities. The animation in My opinion was crisp, clean, and really clear. Not to mention beautiful! Most of the characters in this show are hilarious Looney Tunes characters that we all love. in My opinion these characters are the funnies and talented ever seen. In fact, The things that goes on in this series' cartoons are in My opinion nuts which that is what makes them hilarious! There are so many to like and laugh at and the silly things they do! If you like the original Looney Tunes then I strongly recommend that you watch this show!
