Freaky Aliens in Space after a Galactic War. You as a brain in a computer.
voytrex3 July 2000
Deadalus Encounter was included in a games-package for the Performa5200, my first computer. After some problems with the installation, the nice graphic intro astonished me. I was pretty curious and then I lost myself in space. After hours of great fun I came to a level I didn't manage to solve. Until now, I still don't no what's coming next... Great fun to play. Try it. Tia Carrere makes it worth, too.

The Daedalus Encounter is an ambitious game that combines FMV with puzzle-heavy gameplay and, at times, more freedom & exploration than most other FMV titles.

Warning: Spoilers
The year is 2135 AD, and you are Casey.

In the midst of a war you were critically wounded in such a way that, the only way to preserve your consciousness, everything that is you, is to place your brain inside of a floating robot- to be fair, the brain is in a mechanism on the ship which wirelessly transmits itself to the robot. Like Space Bluetooth, only with better range.

Bored and looking for some "tasty salvage" to make money from, Ari and Zack decide to go exploring in a former war-torn sector, finding there an old abandoned alien ship.

While this is an FMV title, and there are definitely lengthy sequences with no interactivity whatsoever, there are also segments where exploration is key, where you are given the freedom to fly about the ship, and have to in order to proceed.

For the most part, though, things are pretty linear, where you'll be going from one puzzle to the next, all the while Ari and Zack, portrayed by Tia Carrere (of "Wayne's World" fame) and Christian Bocher (from "Stargate SG-1") respectively, exchange witticisms- these two are genuinely likable characters, a rare trait for an FMV game to have.

While the CGI is pretty dated, and what the actors are working with here is a mostly-CGI alien ship, it also manages to create a bright, often pretty alien atmosphere that manages to fill you with a sense of wonder and mystery as you explore it, hoping to find some way off of it before it finishes its collision course with the sun (hence the name)

It's not all puzzles and occasional ship-exploration, though, there are a variety of action sequences that require you to think fast in order to help Ari & Zack proceed safely through the ship, and your little floating robot self is equipped with its own laser gun as well.

This is a game that I personally absolutely love and return to every few years just because I enjoy the story, the puzzles, the soundtrack, and the feeling of mystery and wonder that it inspired in me growing up, and even today can still feel. It also has a few alternate endings- not enough to give it a ton of replay value, but still cool.

There is also has a difficulty setting, affecting mainly the puzzles, but still a nice touch for someone wanting to go back and experience it again with a new challenge. It has a cute story, witty dialogue, Tia Carrere, it's set on an alien spaceship, what else do you need, really?

A great action packed game!
ab-26 September 1999
This game is like a movie but you need to make the right decisions for the ending. I recommend you buy this game if you like shooting stuff. Even though there are some boring parts, there is a least a funny scene or two. I give it 7 out of 10.

Great Game!
TERMINATOR18030 July 2001
This game is awesome, it has 2 great actors, nice comedy, a good plot, and smooth FMV. The 3DO version is better than the PC version from what I hear (I've only played the 3DO version) The PC version is supposed have a smaller screen ratio than the 3DO so I would suggest playing it on 3DO first, especially since it has more than one good FMV Games (Live Action Video, games with actors) If you do, however, buy a 3DO, try this game and Psychic Detective.

Whilst looking for valuable cargo, coming across an unknown ship that's heading for the Sun can only mean one thing: it's The Daedalus Encounter!

Warning: Spoilers
I know a lot about space and I love this game. My Dad and my sister played it and I quickly got into it myself. I know how to complete almost all of the puzzles and can really get into the atmosphere the game has. Games that usually involve action interest me and The Daedalus Encounter is full of it. I like the storyline of the unknown alien ship heading for the Sun which course must be altered. Ari and Zack are excellent thought-out the game. So is Casey. Two of my favourite points are when Ari, Zack and Casey battle the Crin, and the completion of the Orbits puzzle. The transformation of the surrounding area and a total eclipse occurring is very beautiful!

I was really fascinated when all six orbs were collected and Air and Zack were lifted up and out of the Central Hub. Of the many endings the game has, my preferred ending is the live alien responding to Casey and a force field appearing around the Artemis and the alien ship's navigational controls, protecting them from the intense heat of the Sun. It's a truly tremendous moment and I'm sure Ari, Zack and Casey may meet the Daedalus again at some point in the future. Until then, it's off into outer space for more adventures! It's a brilliant game!

An Assorted Puzzle Pack
sam_311 June 2001
For a starter, you may be misguided to believe from the outset that this is a "shoot-the-bad-aliens" Sci-fi game. This is not. Rather, this is an assorted puzzle package in which you are asked to solve in outer space ("Why?" I wonder). Further, this, as others also pointed out, is more of an interactive movie than a game: that is to say, you are sitting in front of your monitor listening to the characters chatting around, and you ask yourself, "Is there anything I should do?". The answer, "No, just wait until the next puzzle comes up." And you will be waiting for a long time. When you notice you missed something in the previous scenes, you don't want to go back because there's too much to wait. Finally, there are a lot of bugs, I suspect (I played it with my Mac G4). Saving games (and loading them) with all the precious "points" for one. In some scenes, you find that your mouse's sensitivity is just not good enough for the game (I spent all day trying to get Zack out of his fall-Blue Hall). Some web sites provide you with "cheats", but not all are accurate or helpful. You might as well do it yourself. The good side: The graphics were not that bad. The plot was to some extent original, Tia ... you'll enjoy if you are her great fan. Oh, and a question to whoever knows a lot about this game; RE: Blue Hall (the Hologram chamber) I cannot get to send the code to the statue after solving the "orbit puzzle". The statue is holding a "orb" >which I suspect, I am supposed to collect. (to be honest, I read the "cheat" that I should do so). Can anyone tell me how to get this one? My rating for this game is 3 out of 5.
