Three fishers in fishy business
dbdumonteil30 September 2016
The screenplay involves two fishermen,in love with two florist assistants:in order to impress them, they pass themselves off as wealthy industrialists ,sardines cannery millionaires ;as the girls do not want to be outdone by them, they claim to be movie stars .Then follows a far-fetched story featuring a false aunt Clarisse,(one of the guys disguised as an old Breton spinster),a 500,000 tinned sardines order, a ship owner eaten with remorse for he thinks he's caused the would be auntie's death, and finally the appearance of the true auntie.

This is primarily a musical ,based on actor/writer Henri Alibert's operetta ,with a song every fifteen minutes ;it takes place in Marseille ,with the Pastis drink ,the Provençal accent, the de rigueur slap at the Parisians (you tell lies like a Parisian),but do not expect Marcel Pagnol's charm.

A remake was made in the fifties starring operetta star Marcel Merkès ;it was not an improvement on the 1937 version ,except for the color."Un De La Canebière" (one from the Canebière) was renamed "Trois De La Canebière" (three from the Canebière),in the end ,a more adequate title.
