Storyline
Did you know
- TriviaArlo has an older sister (mentioned but not seen) named Arlene. Despite the clear similarity between the names, they do appear to have different origins.
- Alternate versionsCompared to the earlier Orion VHS and Image Laserdisc, the version distributed on VHS and DVD by Feature Films for Families cuts almost 2 minutes in 7 small sections. These cuts are primarily concerned with references to astrology, witchcraft, and other "non-Christian" subjects, and some sexuality, although sexuality does not seem to be the primary focus.
- Arlo promises to behave on his date: "by the blood of a horny toad, I swear!"
- Before Arlo heads out for his date, his mom offers to read his date's palm and asks him to at least find out her sign; his dad wants to talk about his first date with Arlo's mom, and encourages Arlo to stay out late. (The palmistry book his mom is reading remains visible, and his dad's later comment that a 9:15 return is "the best you could do" retained.)
- Part of a long panning shot showing the double date inside the movie theater is cut to hide 2 teenagers making out a few rows ahead.
- Both times Gus' story of how he became a frog (first told by him to Arlo, then by Arlo to Susie) are severely shortened. The wicked witch who wanted a kiss from him, his refusal, and her turning him into a frog are all removed, so the story basically becomes that he used to be a prince, and now he's a frog (600 years).
- Before Arlo tries getting his mom to give Gus a good night kiss, he makes up a story that Gus isn't feeling well in order to build up sympathy, and she is surprised her "beetle mash" remedy didn't do any good.
- While Arlo's outside trying to recruit a girl to kiss Gus, his parents talk about him inside. Cut is a line from his mom chalking up his behavior: "Well, Mercury is in retrograde! I'm gonna do his chart again." Arlo walks into the house, between his parents, during the cut.

Short but charming kids movie
I don't know what it is about this movie that makes me like it so much. It's pretty cheesy and predictable but than again I have a thing for cheesy, feel good, 80's comedies. To sum it up the movie is about a geeky boy named Arlo who has a crush on susie a wannabe cheerleader and with the help from his new friend Gus (A prince transformed into a frog) finds enough 'a confidents' to ask her to be his science fair partner and in exchange Arlo must find a way to get Gus kissed so he can turn back into a prince. This is a movie aimed at a young audience, I saw it first when I was 12, and the moral is basically don't judge people by their appearance or geekyness.
Shelley Duval is very funny in this movie which also features some other actors about to find success in hollywood; Elizabeth Berkly and Hal Sparks.
