Worth watching for Sammo's martial arts; good comedy as well as drama.
Wolfie-929 December 1998
"Martial Law" is your standard cop show in one way - the actual "cop stuff" is the usual nonsense you can see anywhere on TV, the "same old same old" which makes real cops wince. What makes this show worth watching is the incredible martial arts prowess of the cast - especially Sammo Hung. Just like Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-Fat, Sammo trained at the Peking Opera School, which makes for a unique - and often funny - style of martial arts. The entire cast works well together, and they can all actually *act* - unlike a certain 'Texas Ranger' who comes on after this show. Lots of comedy in this show - they don't (usually) go for the cheap "Chinaman in America" jokes, and they actually seem to remember what they've done from one show to the next. All of the martial arts used on the set are real - Sammo, obviously, is an expert, and Louis Mandylor ("Louis") is trained in "muy thai" (Thai kickboxing), while Tammy Lauren ("Dana") is a black belt in Karate [I haven't heard a real reason for her departure], and Kellu Hu ("Grace / Pei Pei") is a brown belt in Karate. Tom Wright ("Lt. Winship") is a former stuntman, and does his own stunts in the show as well. And, just as with Jackie Chan's movies, at the end of every episode they have a brief "outtakes" section, showing some of the goofs that occured during the filming of the episode.

Good acting, decent plots, and plenty of kick-butt action, as well as many comedic moments (Sammo playing "Smoke On The Water" on the guitar...) make this a show to watch.

Martial Arts
safenoe3 October 2021
Sammo Hung's acting may be a bit stilted, but you can't say the same for his awesome martial arts skills. It's a shame Martial Law was cancelled at the millenium. It should have gone on for two or three more seasons.

Fun show canceled by empty suits
jameselliot-119 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Empty suits: the invisible destroyers of TV shows

Season 1 ended with a cliffhanger that was completely ignored in season 2's opener. This is the meaning of the word frustration. Sammo was excellent. Arsenio's addition was criticized but I thought he added to the show. (The dynamic is nothing like Chan and Tucker in Rush Hour.) Season two got rid of Sammo's hottie potential love interest Julia Campbell. They got rid of Lieutenant Winship and Detective Malone. Sammo was upset over season 2's scripts and that coupled with high production costs led the suits to close the show. This is where a syndicate would come in and take over but it didn't happen in this case.

One Of The Few Great 1990's Action Series
Big Movie Fan23 May 2002
The 1990's were quite disappointing for fans of action shows. Martial Law was one of the few good shows.

Sammo Hung played Sammo Law in this show. He was brilliant. I am not a big fan of Martial Arts shows but this was entertaining. The stunts and the fight scenes were just amazing. Sammo was very agile for his size and there was always fun in watching him beat the bad guys; he always used their own weapons against them. No bad guy could beat Sammo-even if they had a gun or a knife. Sammo just kicked their butts.

Add to this the chemistry between all the characters and the great villains throughout the series and you have one really great show. Check it out.

Great show...
sbs_reg9 November 2008
I loved this show. This was just mindless entertainment for me. It made me almost forgot the problems of the day or week.

I read some comments saying that Sammo Hung fighting reminded him of Jackie Chan's fighting craziness. I hope so - since they both grew up together the China. Sammo, Jackie and another martial arts actor Yeun Biao(sp?) grew up together and made movies (sometimes, acting together). They were called, in Hong Kong, "The Three Brothers". Their fighting styles were somewhat similar. Here is some small tidbits of info on the show: - In the pilot episode, Sammo had to do his own stunts. From what I read in the papers at the time, his personal stuntman had problems with his paperwork so he couldn't be there to double for Sammo.

  • In one episode, I found out later, Jackie Chan made a small appearance as a drunk. It was done as a favor from one brother to another. Now, I have to see which episode and what point of the episode.

Kelly Hu and Sammo Hung
rossini-186811 April 2020
This show was given a second shot in Season 2 and seriously blew it. For some reason, they brought in Arsenio Hall to try and capitalize on the fame of Rush Hour and it killed the show. Instead of making sexy Kelly Hu Sammo's partner, they pushed her off to the side and that made the show half as good as it could have been.

As the novelty of Sammo Hung wore off, there was nothing in the show to make up for it. Arsenio Hall's antics were more annoying than funny. No further depth was given to Kelly Hu's character. Luckily the show had just enough left to be worthy of syndication. With the combination of Sammo Hung, Kelly Hu, and a magical second season theme by Joel Goldsmith, the son of the great Jerry Goldsmith, the show still has just enough watchability to pull you in and hold you.

Its still fun to watch Sammo Hung's fighting skills. As a child he trained with Jackie Chan in a Peking Opera School, where strict training and harsh discipline were the norm. Despite his size, its easy to see that Sammo Hung is clearly one of the best martial artists in the world.

A highly recommended crime show.

I watched this show as a kid and it was a fun show to watch. Best moment were the stunts and fight scenes. Sad that the good shows are short lived.

When (Sammo Hung) Killed (Sammo Law) !
elshikh416 November 2007
At the first episode (Shanghai Express), I said to myself: "No way! They're making a big mistake and they will cancel it soon for sure!" But unexpectedly I discovered how good it was. And despite some things, not a lot of things, this was always fresh and amusing show which had some potentials yet in low production, and customary direction. But if you ask me what has brought this one to an end? My answer will be innately Mr. Sammo Hung Kam-Bo!

At season one, there was that drift to assure China's great culture: the deep method of fighting against the muddled violent American methods, the wisdom quotes from their legacy, the old traditional habits, the spiritual faith, and the nice main musical theme by national Chinese instruments. Actually the character of inspector (Sammo Law), as the finest policeman in Asia, was so idealistic as a working man, or as a human being, so his sapience was there all the time to guide his new American colleagues for the best, in the same time that all of them were trying hard to keep up with his unique way of fighting. He was a funny guy who could play the rock out of a guitar, hence his turning into a member of the American society was interesting with all the continual sarcasm about the western materialism (Why everything must be big in America?! / Well, America is a big country, so we want everything as big as her!). All of that was really one of the biggest apologies in the history of the American TV for the way that was used to show any Asian character during the past half century (evil, ignoble, craven, stupid.. you name it!) yet that was done by some Asian money, and talents. Because Hollywood knows one very important policy: The Green! So the Asian production companies entered there to confirm lately its growing influence.

But unfortunately, at the second season, this gentle benign patriotism almost died down, and that kind of drift had been weakened, with no more talking about China's culture, no more showing for traditional habits, and no more musical theme with national instruments. They wanted this to be so American or less Chinese. Yes, that was little disappointing, but what about the rest of the show?

The most beautiful thing in (Martial Law) was the writing. Truly I do believe that this show wouldn't make it through 2 years without those brilliant team of writers, not even with the greatest Kung Fu combats ever. They persevered in finding new thrilling idea for every episode. Although at the end of season 2, when we followed the continuous battle between (Sammo) and the evil organization of (Scorpio), it was kind of naive sometimes, however it wasn't bad at all, only less powerful. Putting in mind that it was also better than a lot of conflicts at other shows. And as for the choreography of the fights, it was very creative, never repeated, and too spirited with a new place, trick, and jest every time. Though you'll witness with that the real painful reasons which terminated this show!

As one big reason: the bad acting. Yes, this show is not about acting, also the very writers tried so much not to put anyone of the characters in any hard moment, but the final result was close to awful, especially (Gretchen Egolf)'s poor performance, with her right eyebrow always UP! and above all, of course, the star of the show (Sammo Hung) himself! This man nearly destroyed his own success by his insistence to be inanimate as an actor, with his lifeless performance, and the eternal mineral face of him which can make you feel sometimes that he is a fat robot with the most pathetic English in the world. Although he endeavored to compensate that by bringing (Arsenio Hall) to do what (Chris Tucker) did for (Jackie Chan) in movies, nevertheless it was so hard to watch the same (Sammo)'s out-of-fashion hair cut, the same frozen features (while he can laugh indeed, but only in the bloopers sequences!) as well as the same constant way of diction whatever the feelings were (even Arnie can be wonderfully angry). (Sammo) didn't try to get better even with the complexity of his role as a wounded father at the end of season 2, and to tell you the truth: THAT WAS BORRRRRRRING! Not to mention the abundance of using a thin double of him during the fights, and he was that evident too, so with that hits the only thing which he is good at.. it became unbearable!

Over and above, the presence of dozens of contemporary movies with martial arts which are more rich and attractive, plus many shows of cops, American cops, too. Therefore, despite the good quality, and the fact that this series was great as average, the American viewers simply became fed up quickly with this invariable middle-aged not-handsome obese hero; so they accustomed themselves to change the channel to anything else, like they've taken objection on the most important crime that this cute show didn't bring up at all: the crime of killing inspector (Sammo Law) by the hands of the actor (Sammo Hung)!

Well, well, what to think
alcmtr-junk8 September 2018
I just finished Episode 1 of Season 1. I was reminded of the Rush Hour movies. The bottled blonde on the series in was completely idiotic. She couldn't hold a gun properly. She didn't know what she was doing with the gun when she walked, when she ran, when she did anything. Whoever was working with her to get her moves right did a lousy job. The show itself was completely lame and idiotic. No successful completion in getting the bad guys. If episode is an example of the rest, it's no surprise it only lasted two years. The question is how did it manage to get to season 2.

Adding Arsenio Hall and dropping Tammy Lauren and Louis Mandalor killed the show.
jmworacle-9902530 December 2020
Really Liked Tammy Lauren ad Kelly Hu. Show went down hill mid season one by dropping Tammy Lauren then Louis Mandylor. Adding Arsenio Hall killed the dynamics. Sammo Kam-Bo Hung as an action hero was like a bumble bee. Didn't look the part nut he performed well. The crossover episode with Walker Texas Ranger was my favorite.

Seriously???
chiguy173 August 2019
How is one supposed to believe a middle aged, very overweight guy is a deadly martial arts expert? 😂 It's not a bad premise, but they TOTALLY miscast the lead. I'm shocked the rating is as high as it is, considering this entire show was just laughable.

Today's lesson: How to ruin a TV show
Wizard-820 September 2010
When "Martial Law" premiered, I was hooked. Sure, it wasn't great art or fabulous writing on display, but the show was goofy fun. But then bit by bit, the producers tinkered with the show, and with each adjustment, the show became worse.

The first misstep happened shortly after the theatrical movie "Rush Hour" became a hit. The producers must have thought "Hey! What this show needs is an obnoxious, hip, and streetwise partner for Sammo Hung!" Shortly afterwards, Arsenio Hall became a cast member, and his character was EXTREMELY annoying.

The next misstep was when the second season of the show premiered. First, the producers had fired several cast members, despite these fired actors and their characters being a very likable bunch. They also ignored or quickly wrote out the plot threads that had been going along in the previous season.

After some time, the producers tinkered with the show again. Suddenly Kelly Hu's character had a COMPLETELY different background, and the show suddenly had the characters fighting with a secret organization that threatened the city each week. This organization was treated with the same goofiness of the evil secret organization in the "Inspector Gadget" animated series.

Fortunately, the show was cancelled after the second season had played out. (And around this time, to Arsenio Hall's credit, he admitted that the show was terrible.) Since this series only ran two seasons, it is highly unlikely that the show will be seen in syndication, at least in North America. Just as well. If you DO get the chance to see the show, watch it until Arsenio Hall appears. Then stop watching!

Greatest Fight Scenes Ever Seen On U.S TV
conorpglackin29 August 2022
I recently tracked down a U. S import DVD of Martial (1998-2000) after seeing some of the awesome fight scenes on youtube. After watching the 2 seasons, I must say that Sammo is awesome, the fight scenes are excellent, and the fun factor is definitely evident throughout (the blooper reel at end of each episode was great!).

Season 1 had the best fight scenes, but Season 2 definitely had better consistent action and fights.

However, I do believe the show never really reached it's full awesome potential. For starters: 1. Season 1 had more generic cop show story lines that sometimes had me counting the minutes for the next fight scene.

2. Season 2 got rid of Louis Mandylor, who had much more chemistry with Sammo than Arsenio Hall did.

3. Sometimes the writers of the show never let Sammo ACT! They would focus on the other actors we don't care about because they were afraid that he couldn't speak english.

4. The show never let Sammo/Arensio develop a full chemistry/comic banter (sometimes they showed sparks of it (e.x S2 E1), but most of the time they're split up, or not focused on enough like Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker played off eachother).

5. The writers in both seasons (especially season 1) fiddled with the formula too much, meaning characters would come and go, Sammo would get focused on and then he wouldn't.

Still, I really recommend you track down this show. If you like martial arts or old style cop shows, this show delivers in an awesome way!

Arsenio Hall
mmmlanae9 March 2019
Why do you ruin your chances of receiving a much higher rating by utilizing the extremely poor acting skills of Arsenio Hall? The only decent actor in the entire cast is the lieutenant.

"Not slow, just fat"

I've been watching this show from the beginning, and I think I'll continue to do so. The action is good, and the story is, as far as I can see, devoid of stupid little flaws. (Then again, I haven't been looking for them). However, the first episode of the second (?) season (the one with the new chief and Jerry Doyle as McQueen) had a small flaw that I noticed without running it on slow motion: A pair of handcuffs breaking, then being whole again in the next cut. I hope there's not a lot of these, as I will be looking forward to the next episode.

The best things about it, in my opinion, are Sammo's wit and a great pace.

One word: Awesome!
wishkah78 December 1999
When I saw Martial Law for the first time when it aired, I was immediately hooked! And I made it my Saturday night ritual! Sammo, Terrel, Grace, and Amy are all very provocative, coloful, and cool characters in their own way. I miss Louis, though. I'm also a big fan of Jackie Chan's movies, too. And the director of this show is the same who did those Jackie Chan movies! In this show, you not only have crimes being solved, you have comedy, cool karate moves, and most of all a fun show to watch!

Even Arsenio Hall is learning some of those slick karate moves, himself, and I love his comedic antics! Sammo is awesome, Grace (Kelly Hu) would make a good role model for young girls who watch this, & she has cool moves like Sammo, and Amy too, and she's cool as the boss!

Even though we're still left hanging from last season's cliffhanger, this show is getting better in every episode they make. I hope CBS renews it for a third season! Either way, it's still an awesome and spectacular show! If you haven't seen it yet, feel free to see this one!

this show is awesome
angie-274 April 1999
I can't say enough good things about this show. As a 18-year old action loving teenager, I think this is the best action show on television. But enough about me, let's talk about the show. The show centers on Sammo Law, played by Sammo Hung, as a Chinese cop who trades places with a cop from L.A. Sammo and his student, Grace/Pei-Pei, begin to work as detectives on the L.A.P.D., under the command of Lt. Windship (Tom Wright). Arsenio Hall was thrown into the mix, just for comic relief, as Tyrell Parker. And Louis Mandylor rounds out the group as detective Louis Malone. The characters all work great together. The best part of the show, however, is Sammo's martial arts moves. Sammo is a big guy, but he still manages to kick butt like it's nobody's business. Martial Law is way superior to Walker, Texas Ranger, Nash Bridges, and Sons of Thunder all put together. More people should watch this show so it won't canceled or anything like that.

Fantastic comedy by a brilliant and wonderful master
uritmate30 June 2002
Martial Law first entered my television set in 1998, it completely surpassed my expectations.

Being a huge Sammo Hung fan already I thought, this cannot be as good as some of his films, I was right, it was a hell of alot better than some of his films.

I have now watched every single episode, and am now watching the re-runs (second time round), and still love it as much now as I did when it first came onto my television.

For Sammo Hung fans, this is a series not to be missed. For Martial Arts fans, this is a fantastic array of stunts, humour, tricks, tips and kick-ass.

This series truly is a wonderful masterpiece, by a wonderful, talented, brilliant and artistic person, Mr Sammo Hung.

I am just now hoping there will be a new series and a video/DVD release of the old series, it would be a shame if there were not.

Thoroughly enjoyable entertainment !
JBall7548727 August 2002
I tuned in to 'Martial law' a few days ago on UK satellite TV. Well, I've never seen a 'police' series quite like it - it makes Hawaii 5-0 look positively archaic by comparison, Sammo,Grace and Company combine to offer a beautifully choreographed and seemingly non-stop sequence of action packed episodes (aided by some dazzling stunts and clever camerawork ) One can forgive the fact that the rest of the city police force appear to be surplus to requirements and that the plots are sparkling gems of improbability - the whole programme is propelled forward by an irresistible combination of incandescent martial arts skills, transcendental displays of the powers of deduction, coupled with what appears to be an undercurrent of good humour which is never far from the surface. This is a programme which is a fine example of the type of professionalism which maintains credibility but doesn't take itself too seriously.A first class example of comedy/action which is a sheer joy to watch, and mercifully free from cliches and stereotypes.Strongly recommended to those who want to enjoy themselves !

This show is really good!!
Chris(Runner)1 May 1999
This show is a new idea that definitely worked! However, I have read a review that says that this show is "better than that lame Texas Ranger show." I say this is a total copy of "Walker, Texas Ranger." It has the same plot and everything. Plus, I think it is a little more childish than "Walker." But even still, this is a really, really good show that all martial arts and/or crime fighting fans should definitely watch.
