Hauntingly sober.
punishmentpark7 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
A sober telling of an aloof girl who lives alone with her father. A local boy strikes up a friendship with her, and in time even wants to marry and take care of her. He is onto something with her, that turns out to be a shocking affair. In the second part, certain things have changed, and the girl starts anew, but the past continues to haunt her.

Janine Duvitski plays Diane Weaver, and does so with so much natural presence that at times you'd think it was a documentary. Of course, this performance is much helped by the direction of Alan Clarke, a true master of sober, social filmdrama. The only thing I could object to is that some of the scenes carry on a little too long, maybe. Nonetheless this is a must-see for those who seek real-life cinema dealing with dark and disturbed subject matter, and certainly could do with some more praise here on IMDb.

A big 8 out of 10.
