While watching a DVD collection of old Vitaphone musical shorts, this particular one took me by surprise several times--and NOT in good ways. First, there was a male falsetto singer. This sort of thing was popular in the early 30s (hence the appeal of Rudy Vallee), but it sure doesn't translate well to today. It's actually a bit painful to hear. But it got worse. Next was a song and dance number from the 'Toyland Club'. It featured a guy dressed like a wooden soldier and a woman billed as a china doll. They cavorted about and the orchestra was dressed as soldiers--and I sure felt sorry for them! Finally, a woman came out with an accordion and sang--with a HUGE accordion behind her. Frankly, she wasn't very good. It's a shame but I just found this one hard to take. Perhaps you'll like it...
