The first episode of the adventures of a poacher,Maurin Des Maures, a womanizer and a colorful character who falls in love-but do not renege on his freedom- with the gamekeeper's daughter ,herself engaged ,willy nilly , to a gendarme ;it takes place in the southeastern France in the Massif Des Maures (hence the hero's nickname)in the department of Var,between Hyères and Fréjus .
It's often filmed on location , and the movie takes advantage of the lovely forest landscapes; The principal (Berval) has plenty of go and of humor going for him, but the rest of the cast (particularly the reluctant fiancée -Jeanne Boitel-) is not really enthusing;besides ,like in the sequel ,the screenplay is disjointed and never quite exciting .
This was followed by two sequels :"l'illustre Maurin " the following year ; for the first installment ,one should read:1931; then two decades later " les souvenirs de Maurin Des Maures (1950)
