Extraordinary Documentary
Cast aside the conjecture about the reason these soldiers were deployed to Hong Kong, cast aside the veracity of the level of training they received to prepare them. Cast aside the sensational allegations made to generate publicity for the documentary.
NONE of these points is particularly relevant to the principal value of this documentary.........
The point of this documentary and the reason why it's impossible NOT to watch it, riveted to the screen, is the honestly and bravery of its principal subjects.
As a veteran and student of military history I've never seen a documentary give the platform afforded to these veterans and they pay the viewers back with an extraordinary insight into their horrendous experiences of that Christmas in 1941, the friends they left behind and the impact on the rest of their lives.
Their service, sacrifice and legacy does not deserve to be diminished by the claims made by the producers, what they endured is a matter on fact and should never be forgotten. For them and their memory I mark it 9/10! I urge you to watch it. The Requiem sung by Aled Jones is particularly poignant.
