UK kids wouldn’t have survived the 90s without The Crystal Maze, Knightmare, Gladiators and more…
Remember boredom? Boredom was to a nineties childhood what stress is to modern adulthood – a constant and inescapable presence, relieved only by television.
See related Gotham season 4 episode 7 review: A Day In The Narrows
The difference is, even television could be boring in the nineties. Grown-ups exclusively watched One Man And His Dog, The Budget and Ballykissangel, the sort of programmes that gave you Sunday-night-dread any day of the week. Try as you might to escape border collies, Kenneth Clarke and priests having harvest festival scrapes in picturesque Irish villages, it simply wasn’t possible. There were no streaming services to come to your rescue. Video rental was a birthdays-only treat. What else were you supposed to do? Read?

Can lovely, innocent Blind Date really exist in the same tawdry world as Take Me Out?
Blind Date is coming back this weekend. So much has changed since the 1980s, both on TV and in society itself, that what returns to our screens may not be a straight-forward, fully-intact teleport of the format, but rather a mutant mish-mash: a half-fly Jeff Goldblum of a show just begging to be put out of its misery. The truth of this inevitable transformation can be seen in the steps already taken up the light-entertainment evolutionary ladder, most notably in the DNA of ITV's long-running post-Blind Date offering, Take Me Out.

You've Been Framed viewers have criticised the programme after a repeat failed to remove an insensitive Cilla Black joke.
A rerun shown over the weekend included a joke about the presenter banging her head in a swimming pool.
Black passed away at the age of 72 earlier this year, after suffering a traumatic head injury while in Spain.
The episode of You've Been Framed saw presenter Harry Hill narrate a scene featuring a red-haired woman falling and hitting her head, saying: "And here's Cilla Black's last show for ITV. Cilla's super splash down."
While the show originally aired months before Black's death, fans took to Twitter to voice their criticism:

Watch Digital Spy's interview with Sheridan Smith about Cilla
ITV's Cilla Black biopic, which starred Sheridan Smith in the title role, launched with bumper ratings last night. Cilla attracted the channel's biggest drama audience launch since a little old show called Broadchurch and it has also won rave reviews.
Smith has been singled out in particular for her incredible performance as the Liverpudlian popstar in the swinging '60s and the only criticism that some viewers seemed to have was that she was too good a singer when she performed as Cilla. High praise indeed. Here is a roundup of the critics and Twitter verdicts:
The Critics:
The Telegraph
"Smith sang her heart out, catching perfectly the bluesy belter within the girl next door, but rather than rushing her to fame, the action unfolded slowly enough to show her falling at the first hurdle as she became crippled with nerves singing for Brian Epstein.

Singer, presenter, matchmaker extraordinaire and probably the most Liverpudlian person alive - Cilla Black is a woman of many titles.
She burst onto the '60s music scene with her number one single 'Anyone Who Had A Heart', and quickly became established as a national treasure. The BBC snapped her up to present her own variety show, Cilla, and in the '80s she began presenting ITV's tongue-in-cheek Blind Date - which she continued to host for nearly 20 years.
Earlier this year she received a special BAFTA for her contribution to television, and is now the subject of a three-part ITV biopic starring Sheridan Smith, starting tonight.
In celebration of this, we've dug up ten things you may not know about the British showbiz icon.

She told the Daily Mirror newspaper's We Love TV magazine: ''Oh my God, that was such a privilege. ''Performing the rock 'n' roll numbers at the Cavern was also brilliant fun. ''All these extras were screaming at me while I was...

Sheridan Smith has revealed that Cilla Black offered advice on how to play her in ITV's upcoming drama about Black's life.
The Mrs Briggs star said that the offer was made when the pair had dinner, but she was too shy to take the 71-year-old up on it, The Express reports.
"She gave me her number and said to call her if I needed but I was too shy," Smith recalled.

Okay, so we might not be wearing our gladrags and we might not be sipping champagne, but who says a onesie and a takeaway can't be glamorous?
It's BAFTA night, and while we're not at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane with all the best and brightest from the last year of television, at least we can join the party from our sofas. Yep, we'll be blogging along with the awards - which start at 8pm on BBC One - so grab your slippers and a cuppa and join in by tweeting @digitalspy and leaving your comments below...
And as a reminder, the awards actually start in "real life" at 7pm - but we'll be doggedly going along with the television broadcast and pretending we're not an hour behind everyone else, so there's no fear of spoilers. If you want things as they happen, we'll be updating our winners' list here.

Who doesn't love an awards show? The fantastic dresses, the backslapping, the emotion, the gutted faces, the fancy meals and goodie bags... and yes, we might watch it all from our sofas, but that just means we don't have to walk around in painful shoes all night. The BAFTAs are one of the best awards nights, too - with television's finest throwing on their gladrags for a proper shindig.
Keeping them all in line - just about - is host Graham Norton. But what is the ceremony really like? Let's take a peek behind the scenes with Graham, as we learn all about the party bus, this year's special winners, why the afterparty ain't all that, and how he deals with his nerves (er: booze).
1. There's something special about the BAFTAs.

Exclusive: Cilla, a biographical drama from ITV penned by BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated Philomena co-scribe Jeff Pope, has added up-and-comer Aneurin Barnard to star opposite Sheridan Smith who is playing the eponymous “Liverpudlian Songbird.” She may be relatively unfamiliar to U.S. audiences, but Cilla Black (née Priscilla Maria Veronica White) is a fixture in the UK, perhaps more so now for her TV hosting gigs, but she was also part of the 1960s Beatles era. The three-part bio-mini from ITV Studios tells the story of her rocky rise to fame. The Liverpool-born star started out working in the typist pool at a local company and ultimately met the two men who came to love her and fight over her: future husband Bobby Willis (Barnard) and original Beatles manager Brian Epstein. The drama explores Cilla’s burgeoning friendship with John, Paul, George and Ringo, the latter of whom helped her to...
