- We see a group of wind musicians rehearsing with a conductor. Trumpeter Leon Menard has been making different excuses when he is called out for his mistakes. Later Leon talks about marriage with his girlfriend, a fruit and vegetable seller named Charlotte, at her workplace. He will need a position to make some money. At the nearby Au Coin bar where she will meet him later, he talks to the bartender about his situation.A suspicious looking man named Bob overhears them and offers Leon a job at the Central Hotel.Charlotte when she comes is skeptical about Bob. Leon goes to the hotel to see the boss.Back in his apartment later, he expresses his happiness by singing, before she visits him. We next see him trying out his uniform and getting some instructions from the daytime concierge, who he will fill in for while he is there at night as the watchman. His first problem is answering the switchboard which turns out to be an irate resident expecting the regular delivery of his bottle, and not realizing there is a new night concierge.Leon doesn't know how to operate the elevator so takes the stairs. Next, two women arrive with suitcases and a dog, the Mademoiselle gets annoyed when Leon says the wrong things but he accommodates her and the companion by allowing the pet, which he isn't supposed to. He misses her floor, taking them up in the elevator, and lands up in between floors and having to carry them down. She tells him several times that she wants to be woken up at 6 A.M. Her dog has left a puddle in the elevator. Leon sleeps for a while in the lobby, until a blonde enters. She is more friendly and shows him how to use the elevator properly but asks about the puddle. Then he retrieves shoes left by people's doors to shine. Next day he visits his girl and leaves a note at Au Coin for Bob, who later comes in with three of his gang. That night back at the hotel the blonde returns with a man who doesn't register as he is supposed to.She reveals what she is up to by telling Leon she is not there to sleep. He brings up champagne and two glasses for them, and the man tips him. Next Bob arrives with his friends and Leon offers them drinks to share with him. While Leon goes upstairs Bob lets the men into the office where there is a safe to crack open, hopefully in half an hour. Leon has become intoxicated and while he drifts off into sleep the men leave the hotel carrying suitcases. The phone rings unanswered so the blonde comes downstairs asking for more champagne.Leon wants a kiss in exchange and then has a strange dream: He is playing his trumpet while she sings, costumed, on a stage. He steps up from the orchestra pit to rescue her from a man who gives him money, then challenges him to a duel.An angel descending provides him with a bottle to drink to rouse his spirits for duelling, but he collapses. Back to reality. We see four men arriving by car at Leon's place, where he goes up to have a bit of daytime sleep. Before Leon leaves for music practice Bob goes up with a suitcase that he plants in the room while the night watchman snores. Back at the hotel the safe break in is inspected, with groups gathering in the office and in the lobby. A suitcase full of jewelry that Mr Van Golden (the one who asked him for a bottle the first night) had entrusted the hotel with has been taken. The inspector tells the bellboy to go with an assistant to Leon's but the concierge there sends them off. His place is later searched and the suitcase belonging to Van Golden is found there.Three officers come to music practice and he is told they are taking him away for a long engagement. He is first seen in session with a judge and pleads his ignorance and innocence by saying he is as white as snow. His girlfriend worries since he is late meeting her. The blonde is next brought in for questioning and then Leon tells them about his dream. Next we see him in jail, pretending to play his trumpet.A lawyer arrives and gives a florid presentation about how he will get him off by arguing the safe break in was motivated by love . The four gang members talk in the bar as they read a newspaper report about the case. In the crowded courtroom Leon makes the spectators laugh with some of his comments .Reporters call in their stories. Van Golden explains he had chosen a small obscure hotel, ironically, so his valuables would be more safe. The blonde testifies Leon argues with the way his lawyer is defending him. Meanwhile Charlotte talks to Leon's concierge. She also talks to the lawyer about her suspicions of Bob. The concierge and Charlotte testify next about how he didn't know what was being done and Leon is finally released, saying his goodbyes to the jailers and kissing his fiancee. Van Golden gives them a check and next we see the couple they are running their own little store as his fellow musicians play out on the street.Leon sings the song again that he had sung earlier, his arm around her.
