Probably lauded far beyond its station, considering its high imdb rating,it nevertheless displays Christian Stengel's taste for mystery, unusual places, offbeat atmospheres one finds in such works as " pas de pitié pour les femmes" ,"seul dans la nuit" and his best effort "la figure de proue".

It's a rural ,or rather mountain thriller ,which almost verges on fantasy :there's an old woman (the always reliable Gaby Morlay) who knows many things and who might have supernatural powers, a treasure hidden somewhere in the mountain.....two crimes are committed , one of the dead bodies is found at the bottom of a calvary;there's a mysterious girl, secretely brought up in a convent , who comes back to the small village .

The plot may be melodramatic and muddled, but the atmosphere is gripping and the depiction of a French mountaineers accurate :the dinner when they savor their cheese fondue makes your mouth water.
