A Note Regarding Spoilers

The following FAQ entries may contain spoilers. Only the biggest ones (if any) will be covered with spoiler tags. Spoiler tags have been used sparingly in order to make the page more readable.

For detailed information about the amounts and types of (a) sex and nudity, (b) violence and gore, (c) profanity, (d) alcohol, drugs, and smoking, and (e) frightening and intense scenes in this movie, consult the IMDb Parents Guide for this movie. The Parents Guide for The Bank Job can be found here.

Is this movie based on a novel?

No. It was taken from a screenplay written by British television writing partners Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais and based on a 1971 true-life robbery of a bank in Baker Street, London.

Is this a true story?

The movie is a speculative look at real events. There really was a bank robbery which took place largely as described and where a press blackout was instituted. There really was a Michael X, who was largely as described in the film. The idea that Michael X had nude photos of Princess Margaret which he was using as a "get out of jail free" card, as well as the idea that the robbery was a black bag job commissioned by British intelligence, is speculative. In at least some interviews the screen writers claim to know someone who is acquainted with the actual bank robbers. They claim that he is the one who advanced the theory that the robbery was a secret government operation to retrieve incriminating photos.

That part of the film is speculation. It has not been proven nor disproven whether these photos are fact or fiction.
