Recently, more than half a century after its premiere, Fox released a retrospective special about the storied anti-war sitcom "M*A*S*H" that included rare and previously unseen interviews with the show's cast and crew. When they weren't reminiscing about their characters and opening up about cast changes over the years, former members of the fictional 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital discussed episodes of the show that broke the TV mold, pushing the medium beyond its established boundaries and yanking on viewers' heartstrings in unexpected ways.
Among the spotlighted episodes in "M*A*S*H: The Comedy That Changed Television" was "The Interview," the season 4 finale that saw the show briefly take the form of a black-and-white war documentary. The late writer and executive producer Burt Metcalfe said the experiment took inspiration from Edward R. Murrow's 1950s newsreel show "See It Now," which included interviews in Korea during the war. King Charles: The Boy Who Walked Alone will debut on the service in the U.S. on May 2, giving subscribers a look at the new monarch’s life from former friends and girlfriends, schoolmates and his private staff ahead of his coronation as king this month.
The doc comes from Diana: The Truth Behind the Scandal producer Blink Films and Paramount Global’s See It Now Studio. In the U.S. it will be branded as a Paramount+ Original, following an agreement brokered through See It Now Studios, whose President Susan Zirinsky keynoted at Mip TV today, where she urged doc makers not to pay contributors.
Silverlinings Rights has been shopping a separate version called My King Charles, which last month was sold to 14 co-production partners including Australia’s Nine Network, Rtl in Germany and TV2 in Denmark.

Susan Zirinsky has criticized documentarians who pay their contributors as she urges her fellow execs to “keep your moral compass.”
The former CBS News President, who is now running CBS production outfit See it Now Studios, joked “you may as well strip me naked and beat me” rather than asking her to pay participants and sources.
“Ken Burns never pays, Alex Gibney never pays, but there is a camp that feels you should pay,” she added. “But for us if you pay someone you will never believe that what they are telling you is something you want to hear. I will walk away before one dime is given for a story.”
Zirinksy launched See It Now around one and a half years ago and the company is producing content for both Paramount’s brands including Paramount+ and Smithsonian Channel, along with pitching to third parties such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Wind River is the best movie this year that you likely haven't seen and possibly haven't heard of.
That's the problem with Hollywood these days. While the film won accolades at Cannes (and has done well internationally), it's $11 million budget is it's (or Hollywood's) problem. Hollywood allocates marketing and advertising dollars based primarily on the size of a film's budget. The bigger the budget, the bigger the ad campaign. And then there are the tiny Indie films with budgets of $1 million - $5 million. They are worth the risk of ad dollars because the profit reward can be so enormous. But, in the $10 million - $25 million range, movies get stuck in a no-man's-land.
These are financial decisions. They have nothing to do with the quality of the film in question. These are decisions made by accountants and lawyers, not artists.

John Wick: Chapter 2 begins a short time after the events of the first film, with John (Keanu Reeves) now retrieving his car that was stolen at the outset. This is merely an excuse for us to see John destroy nameless thugs, and that he does. One could argue that this entire film is exactly that, and one would be right. But John Wick is so much more than just a living weapon of few words — he’s a tragic figure who has suffered deeply and can’t escape his past, with pain and frustration behind his eyes. All that he has is all that he is now, a lost soul with no purpose. After the first film, it would seem that he may be able to find a little peace now, but to quote Westworld (or Romeo and Juliet): these violent delights have violent ends. Peace is nowhere...

One of the redeeming elements of the 2016 election coverage media hellscape has been watching Seth Meyers and the “Late Night” writing team navigate the fine balance of rational reasoning and rational indignation that seems to have eluded most shows which air more than once a week.
Last Monday marked the beginning of the show’s fourth season, which opened with their strongest statement yet, an installment of their segment “A Closer Look” focusing on Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s history of birtherism. Using a weekend’s worth of prep and six years’ worth of evidence, the 10-minute clip is indicative of the concise morsels of fact-checking that the show has been serving up on a near-nightly basis, through the primaries and up through last evening’s live show.

Moviegoers love their murder mysteries, particularly those culled from best-selling beach-read novels. Two years ago, audiences flocked to see Ben Affleck squirm through the twisty Gone Girl. Later this year, Emily Blunt looks to face some difficult questions in playing The Girl On The Train. The movie.s first trailer just dropped. See it now: Published in 2015 and penned by Paula Hawkins, The Girl on the Train centers on a 32-year-old woman named Rachel Watson who believes she witnesses a crime. A woman, who Rachel has been spying on daily via her train commute into London, has gone missing. And Rachel "thinks" she saw what happened. Only, she.s an alcoholic, and her own spotty memory is being called into question by the lead investigator in the case (played by Allison Janney). What.s sexy about all of this? There.s a definite erotic quality to the footage shot...

While some films in contention for the 87th Academy Awards in February are set in Los Angeles, such as Nightcrawler, a number of films are based in New York City. Begin Again features Mark Ruffalo as a New York City record label executive who records music around New York City with a songwriter played by Keira Knightley; Birdman, about a washed-up Hollywood actor trying to write, direct and act in a Broadway play; Whiplash, about a jazz drummer at a Manhattan school; Still Alice, about a professor from Columbia dealing with early-onset Alzheimer’s; and Love is Strange, about a same-sex couple from Manhattan.
Jessica Chastain stars in two different films that take place in New York: The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, about a couple living in New York, and A Most Violent Year, about a couple living in New York during one of the city’s most violent years.

Steve McQueen deserves every gong going for his unflinching portrayal of slavery
While it is not the role of critics to tell people which films to see and which to avoid (audiences make those decisions for themselves), let me begin by saying that if you have any interest in cinema – or, for that matter, in art, economics, politics, drama, literature or history – then you need to watch 12 Years a Slave. If, as now seems possible, this very powerful film from British director Steve McQueen achieves a clean sweep in the forthcoming best picture categories, it will be a rare example of awards ceremonies getting it right.
That McQueen may be on the verge of becoming not only the first black film-maker to win an Oscar for best director, but the first to do so while in possession of a Turner prize, lends enough historical precedent to merit your attention. But...

Actors aren’t the characters they play (duh!), but a lot of times we pretend they are. Whoever they happen to be off-screen can dictate the lens through which we experience them on-screen. In The Canyons, Paul Schrader’s raunchy and malevolent dark-side-of-l.A. thriller soap opera, Lindsay Lohan, in troweled-on ’60s makeup (think Elizabeth Taylor meets Tura Satana), plays a Los Angeles hanger-on named Tara who always seems a thin step away from falling apart. The character, in many respects, is worlds away from Lohan herself, yet we can’t help but notice the similarities. Both exude attitude and vulnerability in equal measure,...

and it is futile and probably fatal to beat it for not laying caviar.

When people argue over the quality of television programming, both sides — it’s addictive crap v. underappreciated populist art — seem to forget one of the essentials about commercial TV. By definition, it is not a public service. It is not commercial TV’s job to enlighten, inform, educate, elevate, inspire, or offer insight. Frankly, it’s not even commercial TV’s job to entertain. Bottom line: its purpose is simply to deliver as many sets of eyes to advertisers as possible. As it happens, it tends to do this by offering various forms of entertainment, and occasionally by offering content that does enlighten, inform, etc., but a cynic would make the point that if TV could do the same job televising fish aimlessly swimming around an aquarium,...

Some movies you just can’t recommend enough, and some you see once and can’t believe that they get this much hype. I can think of dozens of films killed by all the positive buzz that turns off the audience and builds up expectations that simply can’t be met. I loved The Cabin In The Woods but I got sick of hearing everyone saying how good it was, especially me. Yea, it was damned good, but it didn’t change cinema or reinvent the wheel.
The Loved Ones (Starring Stars: Xavier Samuel, Robin McLeavy and Victoria Thaine) also isn’t going to change the way we see movies, but I’ll be damned if it didn’t make me stand up and take notice. Shot a few years ago in Australia and slowly released on overseas DVD, this is so much more than the sum of its parts.

Mike Wallace was one tough s.o.b. -- or so he wanted you to think of him on air. Off camera he could be as charming as Rhett Butler.
We were colleagues during my seven years at CBS News and our offices were on the same floor. He was always polite, attentive, encouraging. Competitive, yes, but not ruthless. Nobody could beat him at quick banter; once, when I produced a series for PBS on the stories of Genesis, he said, "Moyers, you're the only guy still standing who can make money selling the Bible."
But he took a serious interest in the reporting I did for the old Edward R. Murrow documentary series See It Now, and as he had undertaken assignments for that series, too, he would come around and compare notes on different techniques of interviewing. Some girls get the world. Others, like Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan for instance, marry the vampire of their dreams and then tumble down the rabbit hole that is immortality. When your hubs Robert Pattinson has to bite your monster baby out of your tummy, and it’s life and death consequences, you really have few alternatives but to be turned, but for Kristen Stewart in the much loved Stephenie Meyer penned role, let’s face it, the end of the Twilight Saga brings with it all her dreams come true. In fact, a few, like motherhood, she didn’t even know she had. Not that there isn’t a dangerous threat in store for the Cullens and wolves alike in Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn part two, but one thing happens that we have all been waiting for. Bella wakes as a newborn vampire. The wait is over my friends.

It's been over fifty years since Edward R. Murrow walked the corridors of CBS, his mother ship network for decades of highbrow radio and television broadcasting. The Murrow reputation for putting quality content before network profit makes his shadow loom large as the patron saint of American broadcast journalism. His programs include See It Now, in which he eviscerated the junior senator from Wisconsin, Joseph McCarthy, as well as his last CBS Special Report, Harvest of Shame, where he spoke to the American conscience about the plight of the migrant worker. Another popular Murrow-hosted program was Person to Person, the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous meets Entertainment Tonight of its day. It had enough fluff to feed a Girl Scout troop. Murrow had earned enough serious credentials in his career to pull off the puffy celeb beat without being in danger of demoting his brand.

It's a strong week for free films in Austin. The Sunset Supper Cinema at the Whole Foods flagship on Lamar is showing The Hunger (with a special Halloween treat). Most of the programming for this series has been decidedly family oriented; The Hunger is not. The Austin Pets Alive Fall Petsival on Sunday includes a special (and free) Rolling Roadshow screening of Cats & Dogs. Puppies and kittens of all shapes and sizes will be on hand for adoption.
The Apl/Klru Community Cinema series at the Apl Windsor Park Branch is still going strong. This series pairs socially relevant docs and community groups for post-screening discussions. On Tuesday they're showing We Still Live Here (Âs Nutayuneân), directed by Anne Makepeace. It's one of the free Apl screening programs.
Lastly, Cine Las Americas is showing Pedro Páramo at the MacC on Wednesday as part of its Literature in Mexican Cinema series.

If Anderson Cooper isn’t already one of the busiest journalists working in television today, he’s certainly about to be: on September 12, Cooper kicks off Anderson, his daytime talk show.
While sitting in the Beverly Hilton for the summer edition of the Television Critics Association press tour, however, Cooper repeatedly assured the assembled TV critics that he’s up to the task of maintaining a day job while still doing his duties at CNN in the evening and occasionally contributing to CBS’s 60 Minutes.
“You know, I manage my time really well,” said Cooper. “The schedule of this show, we’re taping it and shooting it in the same building where I work at CNN, in New York. I think it’s all very do-able. It’s going to be a lot of work, but I like working hard. I’ve been working hard for a long time now.

I think it’s all very do-able. It’s going to be a lot of work, but I like working hard. I’ve been working hard for a long time now.

Following the successes of recent low-budget science-fiction films “District 9,” “Moon” and “Monsters,” writer-director Joe Cornish’s freshman outing “Attack the Block,” produced for an estimated £9 million (roughly $14 million), delivers a superior diversion, grounded in a quality script and innovative direction.
After mugging young nurse Sam (Jodie Whittaker), a group of South London teens witnesses a small meteor crash into a nearby car. While they search the vehicle for valuables, an alien, a three-foot being that looks like a hideous skinless baby, bites gang leader Moses (John Boyega) and runs away. The boys give chase, eventually catching and killing it. Wielding their trophy, the thugs return to their block, an urban apartment building for the poor similar to the American projects. The pioneering U.S. newsman portrayed by Robert Downey, Jr. in Oscar-nominated drama Good Night And Good Luck has died at the age of 90.
Joseph Wershba passed away in Long Island, New York on Saturday due to complications from pneumonia.
A former World War II army veteran, Wershba began his journalism career as a reporter with the CBS News network in 1944.
He made a name for himself during the 1950s, when a TV expose on Senator Joseph McCarthy helped to put an end to his relentless witch-hunt to out alleged communists in Hollywood, including playwright Arthur Miller and silent film star Charlie Chaplin.
The 1954 investigation, for Edward R. Murrow's news show See It Now, and subsequent fall out with the disgraced politician was dramatised in George Clooney's 2005 film Good Night and Good Luck, which saw Downey, Jr. play Wershba.

Over the last few months, graphic designer Joe Stone [1] has released a couple handy infographics showing the many relationships (married, dated, offspring, clone, nemesis...etc) between the characters in the X-Men comic books [2] and the Fantastic Four universe [3]. This weekend he released [4] a third in his continuing comic book family tree infographic series, this one focusing on the relationships in The Avengers. See it now after the jump. Variety brings news that the genre arm of Us distribution company Magnolia Pictures have picked up the rights for new Korean monster movie Chawz (geddit?).
The story follows a giant killer pig which terrorises the countryside, including a group of organic vegetable-picking tourists (sounds like a far from subtle dig at the non-meat eating population).
Korea was home to the wonderful 2006 creature feature, The Host (another homage to classic B-movie monster yarns) and unsurprisingly, Magnolia were also involved in the Us release of that film too.
Chawz (or Chaw as it’s known here) premiered in the UK at last year’s Leeds Film Festival and is available on DVD through Optimum Releasing, which I’ve just added it to my LoveFilm list.
See it now before Hollywood makes it’s own version.

Yorgos Lanthimos outstanding second feature is quietly making waves on it's far too limited release. Pinned at a jaunty angle between the most savage Von Trier and the coldest Haneke, Dogtooth frequently out does both of their finest efforts and in doing so also manages to infuse a sense of humor so original it almost makes you forget just how strange 90 minutes in a cinema can really be. Though your friends may look at you (and me) oddly for saying so, Dogtooth is, in essence, a comedy. Of course, its a dark one. Black, but a comedy nonetheless. At least I think it is... A mother and father on the outskirts of a Greek industrial town have inexplicably held their three children captive in their house since birth. The pair have subdued the now fully grown adult's every thought of escape with both tiny and elaborate lies. Outside words which...

This year has seen a gourmet of movies hit the screen. Some have been fantastic and some have been rather a waste of time, so it's wonderful when you rent a movie under no pretenses and get what is easily one of the strongest movies of the year fall into your lap.
This was the case with Moon, a movie that did not get a lot of coverage in the media and proved to be a gem in filmmaking.
The general plot goes; Sam Bell, an astronaut is alone on the moon manning the controls and sending resources to Earth to help the diminishment of our planet's power problems. But deep in space, alone, something more sinister lies hidden.
To give anything away would ruin the experience for anyone so the general plot is all I can give of the movie but what I can say is this.

Chicago – It truly has been a year for science fiction like no other. Think about this for a moment: “Star Trek,” “District 9,” and “Avatar” are all very possible candidates for the Academy Award for Best Picture. The wave of quality genre product has even allowed for one of the best science fiction films of not just the year but the decade to go tragically underrated in Duncan Jones’ spectacular debut “Moon,” now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
Sam Rockwell gives the best performance of his spectacular career in “Moon,” delivering what is essentially a one-man show. Rockwell plays Sam Bell, a worker on the other side of the moon in a future where that location happens to be the source of the solution to our energy crisis. Bell mines the source and spends most of his time talking to a robot (voiced by Kevin Spacey) and sending...

The first time I saw a Micheal Haneke film I was fourteen. Late at night I stumbled across a story, whose title I had missed, about a somewhat reclusive young boy obsessed with violent images, including his own home made video of a pig being killed on a relatives’ farm. A deconstruction of the media, it's violent draw and the moral reactions of those who rely on it's power unfolds as Benny plots and kills a friend on camera. The coldness of the picture unsettled me and I would remember it's images for years to come, never able to find the film again, or its name. I wouldn't see Benny's Video again until 12 years later, though, when I did, it's power had not diminished. I had remembered the murder and it's lead up, the more obviously off putting aspects of the film, but perhaps the most horrifying part was forgotten about.

Michael Rother of influential German band Neu! has revealed that he is a fan of Oasis track 'I Can See It Now'. The song, which originally featured on the Japanese version of 2005's Don't Believe The Truth, was also included on this year's Neu! tribute record Brand Neu!. Rother told The Quietus: "I very much enjoyed listening to that compilation. To be honest, I also quite like the Oasis track. I mention that because I read in some reviews that they got a bit of a beating. "It was of course surprising to read that (more)...
