Exciting! Star Trek: Discovery gets off to an enjoyable, satisfying start. Here's our spoilery review and geeky spots from episode 1...
With almost no advance press for Star Trek: Discovery's airing and a whole heap of suspicious-looking production reshuffles and slippages, you could be forgiven for feeling trepidation about whether it was going to be any good or not. The happy news is that the opening episode, The Vulcan Hello, is exactly what it needed to be: a decent episode of Star Trek.

3.9 The ABCs Of Beth
“Overstuffed” is not typically a positive adjective to attach to something. However, Rick And Morty is a series with episodes (especially this season) that feel overstuffed, but, against all odds, make sense and are possible to follow.
The ABCs Of Beth continues that overstuffed feeling, but, sadly, loses the plot a little in the process. It’s unfortunate because this series has been so good about gradually fleshing out all its characters beyond Rick and Morty and this was Beth’s time to shine. Up until this season, we were mostly familiar with her in relation to Jerry, which meant most of...

The Mask started life as a horror movie - but it'd turn into the film that made Jim Carrey a flat-out movie star...
Summer 1994 was an unpredictable time at the box office for Hollywood studios. The year before, Jurassic Park had smashed box office records, but twelve months on, films such as The Flintstones and Beverly Hills Cop 3 were struggling to emulate its success. There were some solid hits: The Client, Maverick and True Lies, for instance. But there was also a sense of things changing. The big money of summer 1994 was being taken by sleeper successes such as Forrest Gump and Speed.

Nb: The following contains spoilers for Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.
See related Annihilation: Oscar Isaac joins Alex Garland’s new film Alex Garland interview: Ex Machina, GamerGate, Jet Set Willy
Those familiar sharp teeth may loom large on Alien: Covenant’s Blu-ray cover, but let’s face it, the franchise isn’t really about those hissing aliens anymore. Since Ridley Scott stepped back into the fold with Prometheus in 2012, the space horror series has veered off on a thematic tangent: the story’s less about predatory monsters and more about a creation turning against its creator.
In Prometheus, the prequel nominally about the identity of the “big guy in the chair” from 1979‘s Alien, there was the overwhelming sense that, out of all the superstitious,...

The slate consists of five shows, two of which of are explicitly tied to Bravo TV shows. The other three appear to be wholly original, and they will follow in the footsteps of Going Off The Menu, which Bravo launched as its first non-companion original digital series in April 2016. Elizabeth Taylor was one of the most beautiful actresses to ever grace the silver screen. But while her looks may have been unparalleled, there was one woman she worried might lead her love Richard Burton astray — Sophia Loren.
In his new memoir, My Life in Focus: A Photographer’s Journey with Elizabeth Taylor and the Hollywood Jet Set, Italian photographer Gianni Bozzacchi opened up about the his close relationship with Taylor and Burton. He first met them on the set of 1967’s The Comedians, and spent years traveling the globe with them afterwards.

As a teenager, many of my first and strongest movie impressions came not from the movies, but from certain critics. I memorized Robin Wood’s analysis before getting a look at Hitchcock’s Psycho. Raymond Durgnat introduced me to Georges Franju and Luis Buñuel, and I first learned to appreciate a number of great movies including The Barefoot Contessa from Richard Corliss, a terrific critic who championed writers over director-auteurs.
The Barefoot Contessa is a classically structured story, in that it could work as a novel; it’s told from several points of view.

StardustExile can take many forms. Several major filmmakers from Poland famously followed the Chopin route to France—Walerian Borowczyk, Andrzej Żuławski, to a degree even Krzysztof Kieślowski—while their pugilistic peer Jerzy Skolimowski, as well as Roman Polanski, was ranging even further across Europe and beyond. But the comically-oriented writer-director Andrzej Kondratiuk—an early Polanski co-conspirator, who died in June aged 79—found voluntary geographical exile without leaving his own country. He was able to renew his creative energies in rural isolation, seeking, gaining and retaining true independence amid a political system founded upon collective, communal effort. Kondratiuk’s five-decade career is thus a consistently idiosyncratic and enigmatic one, encompassing eight theatrical features, several shorts and five TV-movies. Among the latter is the work for which he’s now best known—at least at home—the raucous and irresistibly-titled black-and-white superhero/comicbook spoof Hydro-Riddle (Hydrozagadka, 1972), which after hostile initial reactions has...

Ex Machina director Alex Garland may just have completed the core cast of his upcoming movie, Annihilation.
One of our favourite films of 2015? That'd be Alex Garland's directorial debut, Ex Machina. The superb movie was a rare-ish slice of intelligent science fiction, and it sounds like he's got another with his new movie, Annihilation.
It's an adaptation of the novel by Jeff VanderMeer, about four women set to Area X, an area of America that's been quarantined due to some unusual activity. They are the twelfth such expedition sent there, and it would be fair to conclude that the previous ones did not go well.
Garland is shooting the film later this year if all goes to plan, and has already signed up Tessa Thompson (Creed), Gina Rodriguez (Jane The Virgin) and Natalie Portman (Oscar winner for Black Swan, of course) to appear in three of the four lead roles.

The birth and evolution of the British games industry is perfectly captured in Britsoft: An Oral History. Ryan reviews a great book...
Pick a page, any page, and you'll find something funny, strange or informative. Ah, here we go: page 258, which talks about the time Palace Software hired glamour model Maria Whittaker to pose for the cover of its 1987 game, Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior.

It's an anecdote which aptly captures the 80s era of British software development: the wild, sometimes crazy marketing ideas and gimmicks, the hype, the great mountainous piles of cash for the lucky few, the financial disaster for the less fortunate. It was difficult to hold back a minor ripple of cynicism when Super Mario Maker was given 2015 as its release date. In the place of such wonderful games as Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World, Nintendo decided it wanted to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its biggest franchise with... a construction kit? Wouldn't that be like celebrating, say, 75 years of The Beatles by releasing an official ringtone? Isn't it a bit like Nintendo throwing a load of components in a box and saying, "Here you go. 31 years ago, Cbbc's Broom Cupboard opened its doors. We salute some of its most memorable moments...
On the afternoon of the 9th of September 1985, UK children were introduced to their new big brother. Phillip Schofield, a vision in a side-parting, a geometric print jumper and a beaming smile, arrived in the Children’s BBC Broom Cupboard to babysit the nation’s kids for an hour and a half every weekday.
Schofield’s job was to ferry us through the post-school slump and drop us off at Neighbours no later than 5.35pm. He let us watch cartoons, wished us happy birthday, praised our felt-tip drawings of Jimbo and the Jet Set, and never once told us off for eating too many packs of salt and vinegar Chipsticks before tea.
After Phillip came Debbie Flint, who was awesome because her earrings didn’t match, and then Andy Crane, who...

Nintendo aims to put the colour back into the first-person shooter with Splatoon. Ewan goes hands-on with its multiplayer mode...
Ever since Splatoon was announced way back at E3 last year, I couldn’t wait to get my grubby little mitts on it. Nintendo had a bold, colourful new IP and it looked like their trademark blend of chaotic multiplayer fun and innovative gameplay was being transplanted into an online Fps that was a radical departure from the standard CODs and Battlefields. Cute squid girls who shoot ink guns? I’ll take that over generic, machine gun slinging muscle-bound soldier number 182 any day of the week.
And so, when Nintendo announced they were holding global test fires for the highly anticipated gloopy shooter, I was beyond excited. In fact, as I’m writing this, there’s ten minutes to go until I can have my first crack at Splatoon, and...

Alex Garland says if a new Dredd film happens, "I can't think it's happening with me and the people who made the last one".
This is one of those news stories where you know how it's going to end, sadly. Alex Garland's excellent movie, Ex Machina, is shortly to get its Us release, and he's done promotional work for the picture at the SXSW Festival. Inevitably, the subject of Dredd and Dredd 2 came up.
Bottom line: the sequel's still not happening.
Chatting to Collider, Garland - who wrote and produced the Dredd film - said that the "Dredd thing is a surprise".
"It’s a really complicated set of emotions. I have a lot of regret about how things worked out with Dredd, but it’s very gratifying. The regret it - you do a kind of transaction, particularly with the creators of it, which is that we want...

Starting in 1988, the Parodius games brought a riot of imagination to the shooting genre. Ryan looks back to a brilliantly surreal series...
Konami may be most closely associated with franchises like Metal Gear and Silent Hill these days, but the 1980s really saw it on an extraordinary run of creative from. Having made a splash in 1981 with rock-hard shooter Scramble, it released the button-mashing sports game Track & Field in 1983, and bawdy high-school comedy simulator Mikie.
These paved the way for the arcade onslaught of 1985, which saw the release of four games which were each, in their own way, quite brilliant: run-and-stab action game Green Beret, ground-breaking brawler Yie Ar Kung Fu, cartoon shooter Twinbee, martial arts platformer Shao-Lin's Road, and finally, Gradius.
The latter was a shoot-em-up classic, with its gigantic area bosses, customisable array of weapons, plus graphics and sound which were, for the time, quite stunning. Although Gradius...

Can a new developer breathe some much needed life into Call Of Duty? Strap on your Exo suit and find out in Advanced Warfare...
In a year when so many titles have failed to impress, and few have made much use of the current gen boost in power, it was easy to dismiss yet another Call Of Duty. After all, Ghosts was hardly the best example of the series, and that was handled by the usually impressive Infinity Ward (now lacking key staff, of course). The build up to the game was the usual hype and mirrors, with Activision showcasing an impressively rendered Kevin Spacey and some futuristic action, but many just couldn't let go of that Call Of Duty cynicism we've all come to pull over us like a warm blanket every year. Even Call Of Duty die-hards found Ghosts to be a let down, and the game was the lowest-selling so far.

Comic conventions tend to be a thing you look forward to every year, like Popeyes chicken half-off day (actually a real thing) and Justin Timberlake's yearly SNL appearance. While every person is different in their motivations for going to a con, mine skew towards discovering new art and seeing great cosplay. Of course, my Pop figure hunt for Groot was also a priority. Alas, I did not succeed on that front, but no reason to be a downer. Here is my day at Wizard World Nashville in a nutshell.
Funkos Abound!
When I say I was searching for Groot, I wasn’t kidding. I walked around that floor at least 6 or 7 times over, just hoping to catch a glimpse of the ancient tree god, yet somehow came up empty. I found every other Pop figure I could have possibly wanted, but not Groot. I even entered a raffle to grab a homemade Groot,...

So the Xbox One Media Conference for this year's E3 has just ended, and as they promised at the start, pretty much their entire showcase was about video games. They showed off a number of new titles (some exclusive, some just the first time we've seen them) and we've got all the information compiled in one easy spot for you to check out. Come inside to take a gander in case you missed it during the briefing (or just want to see it again)!
While many site will post these up individually, I for one feel it's easier on everyone to compile them in one big spot, that you can easily find and share with your friends. Plenty of exciting games were shown off at this year's Microsoft briefing so let's get right down to it!

Last year, GTA V became the fastest-selling piece of entertainment in history. Total War: Rome II, SimCity and Tomb Raider also came out last year, and were big hits. Part of me is overjoyed that my favourite entertainment medium is now so hugely popular. Yet another part of me wishes it was still more of a niche pursuit, as it was in the 1980 and 90s.
I cut my gaming teeth on an Amstrad Cpc (thank you Lord Sugar). It had a keyboard, a disk drive, and a green screen. Whenever I saw my dad trying to work on this thing I would be amazed, dazzled and aghast at just how ridiculously dull and turgid the beast was. Just lines and numbers on a green screen generating more numbers and lines.

Insomniac's new Xbox shooter, Sunset Overdrive, has a gameplay trailer detailing the game and mechanics, and here it is...
Trailer
Xbox One owners could be in for a treat thanks to the new Insomniac title, Sunset Overdrive. We'd seen the title announced previously, but only in a CG trailer. Now we have a real trailer for the game that actually shows the title in action, and details how the game will play, along with powers, weapons and enemies.
As you can see from the trailer below, Sunset Overdrive will be a fast-paced, third-person shooter that'll play like a mixture of Jet Set Radio and Infamous, with an injection of Insomniac's penchant for creating all sorts of crazy weapons.
Players will be able to utilise a fluid free-running system to get around the city, avoiding whole armies of foes, and along with the weapons on offer, characters can be augmented using amps,...

Microsoft's debut games console, the Xbox, made a big impact on gaming, but not all of its games got the attention they deserved...
Feature
The new generation console war may turning towads a two horse race, with Nintendo playing catch up, but wind back a few years, and Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo were all hard at it, competing for your money and loyalty. The PlayStation 2 would go on to win the war of its generation, but Microsoft's Xbox was a tough competitor, giving the company a secure foothold, which it would later take advantage of in the next generation with the Xbox 360's dominance.
The original Xbox had a host of great games, many of which have gone on to become successful franchises, with no better example than Halo, but not all of its good games gained the attention they deserved, even if sequels managed to appear in later years.

There were some fantastic children’s television shows in the 1980s. Those of us who grew up in that era will often tell you that the equivalent scene today just isn’t the same – and, while everyone can say that about their own era, it really is true in this case.
One thing in particular was extremely memorable about the shows in question back in those days – the theme tunes.
We really were spoiled for choice for things to watch – to the extent that the memorable theme tunes to the likes of The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Dungeons and Dragons, Jimbo and the Jet Set, SuperTed, Bananaman, Knightmare, Transformers, Pugwall, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors and Jem (and many more) actually miss out on this list! Controversial? You can let us know later.
The criteria for this list is that the show must have originated in the 1980s – whether that...

Happion Laboratories founder Jamie Fristrom has lived a pretty adventurous life in the world of gaming. He was one of the lead developers on Activision’s acclaimed Spider-Man 2 and he witnessed the life and death of his own independent studio. Using the power of Kickstarter though, he has decided to return to his old career. Bringing together all of the knowledge he has accumulated over the years, Fristrom will be launching Energy Hook for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in 2014.
Sounding like the love child of Spider-Man and Ssx, Energy Hook is described as the extreme sport of the future. Using the swinging mechanic that helped make Peter Parker’s adventure such a thrill, players will “swing from rooftop to rooftop, pull off mid-air tricks, run along walls, and rack up points and energy for doing it.” In addition to your swinging apparatus, gamers will also be able to...

And the party rages on! After a wild stop in Brazil that included a trip to a brothel, a creepy video, and alleged hookups with club girls and prostitutes, Justin was back at it, reportedly hitting up a nightclub in Buenos Aires and once again, bringing girls back to his hotel room.
Even though we may want him to, it doesn’t appear that Justin Bieber is slowing down one bit. South America has really brought out the bad boy in the “Boyfriend” singer, and he was reportedly back on the prowl on Nov. 7, partying with local girls at a popular nightclub in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

By now we know Justin’s routine. We’ve actually seen in it — party at night and sleep during the day. And while in Buenos Aires for his “Believe” tour on Nov. 7, he spent his night getting to know the local Argentinian girls.

What are the exclusives, post-launch, that Microsoft has lined up for the Xbox One?
Exclusive launch titles aside, any good console needs a steady stream of exclusives if its going to have any hope of getting one up on the competition. The power of these titles can't be overstated, just look at Nintendo, which has carved a whole section of the market out for itself over the years with almost nothing but exclusives. Having desirable titles that can't be played on any other system is paramount, and both Sony and Microsoft know it.
Both consoles have exclusives in their launch line-ups in order to tempt punters into investing, and then there's the promise of later titles that'll call each platform home. These are games that help keep the console afloat in the long run, and they're every bit as important as the initial wave of games.

It's not unusual for games to be cancelled before release, and some of them could have been great. Here's a pick of 25 promising examples...
Earlier this week, news emerged that Sega Studios Australia had pitched an idea to its parent company called Sega Reborn. These games would have revived some of Sega's classic names from the 80s and 90s - Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Streets Of Rage and Shinobi - and created new games around them, mixing tried-and-tested gameplay with high-res graphics and new ideas. The studio even put together a proof-of-concept video, which gave a rough idea of what a 21st century Golden Axe might look like.
For unknown reasons, Sega decided to pass on the idea, and Sega Studios Australia is set to close later this year - fittingly, perhaps, its last release will be a remake of Castle Of Illusion,...

Gaming may be a few decades old, having long ago ridden its light cycle out of the arcade, yet many still seem to think game music consists of bloops and bleeps.
It's an idea as outdated as disco. So it;s fitting that Nile Rodgers -- the legendary producer and Chic member who best connects that era to this one thanks to his Daft Punk collab "Get Lucky" -- is the person most responsible for giving game music a proper hearing in North America.
Back in 1998, three years after the first PlayStation popularized CD technology in gaming -- dramatically increasing game music's complexity by allowing prerecorded streaming rather than just live sequencing -- Rodgers launched Sumthing Else Music and Sumthing Distribution to get game soundtracks off screen and into stores.
But this story really begins back in the late '70s, when Rodgers first became a gamer.

“Out of light, out of sight.”
The category of 2D side-scrolling games is as timeless and malleable as any genre in the video game industry. In the 1980s, established franchises such as Super Mario Bros. and Sonic were the proverbial foundations upon which game developers built and defined the category through time to become the addictive time sinks we know and love today. And now, with the recent explosion of mobile gaming, the brand of side-scrollers is witnessing a heartfelt renaissance. A renaissance which Curve Studios have capitalized on by porting their puzzle-based 2D platformer, Stealth Inc.: A Clone In The Dark – previously entitled Stealth Bastard on PC platforms – to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
Before we delve into the details, let’s get one thing straight about Stealth Inc.: A Clone In The Dark. You are going to die, a lot. Set within the sinister establishment of PTi Industries,...

Having already added Battlefield 3, Jet Set Radio, and Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee HD to the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection this month, Sony has set themselves up for an incredibly lackluster pair of updates to wrap up July. If you were hoping for a surprise announcement to beef up the remainder of the month’s Plus lineup, brace yourself for a bit of disappointment with this today’s update.
When the Ps Store updates tomorrow PlayStation Plus subscribers will find that Metal Slug Xx for the PSP (compatible with the Ps Vita) has been added to the free Instant Game Collection. Additionally, members will be able to grab a 30% discount on the Benjamin’s Flight Dlc for Thomas Was Alone, making the level add-on a mere $1.74.
Looks like it is one of those weeks that is best used to clear out a bit of your backlog.

A little while back, I published my very first What Culture article about the 7 Biggest Jerks In Gaming. The article consisted of a list of gaming characters who, for one reason or another, I considered to be massive douchebags.
A couple of months have passed now and I feel it is now time to look at some more of gaming’s biggest a**holes.
Some of the characters on this list may intentionally be jerks because they are the villain of the game that they star in. Some may be good guys who just provoke ire from deep within the gamer’s soul. Some may even be a character that we, as the player, control and are therefore a reflection of the innate inner douchbaggery that lives within us all (Spoiler: One of the entries is Totally that last one.)
There may also be some spoilers so please be wary!

The inaugural game in Microsoft's "Games on Gold" program -- which rewards Gold subscribers with free Xbox 360 games twice a month for the rest of the year -- is Hidden Path Entertainment's "Defense Grid: the Awakening," a sci-fi tower defense joint from 2010. That's fine and all, but most of us were under the impression that either "Halo 3" or "Assassin's Creed 2" were on the way.
Microsoft announced the program during their press conference at E3 and hasn't shared much since. Here's how Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer Yusuf Medhi introduced Games on Gold: "And to kick off that program, I'd like to share with you just two of the titles we're going to offer over the next few months: 'Assassin's Creed 2' and 'Halo 3.'"
As Xbox 360 spokesman Major Nelson pointed out on Twitter, Microsoft never actually said that 'Assassin's Creed 2' and 'Halo 3' were going to...
