Convincing hairpieces, taut dialogue, somnambulistic direction.

Always worth watching these Merton Park reruns, in my view; the learned Mr Lustgarten's occasional curious pronunciations is a bonus. Julian Somers' piece was quite undetectable, even without his hat. Could it have been the same item, bequeathed to Walton Studios, for Harry H. Corbett to wear in 'Cover Girl Killer' (1959)? Paul Dickson's directorial credit under an alternative name - can't figure why.

Fatal Journey

Warning: Spoilers
Fatal Journey is a well put together Scotland Yard short.

Mr Preston comes home and sees his wife lying down injured. She later dies in hospital.

Edgar Lustgarten believes that two other people are important to this story.

A man called Goff who claims to have amnesia. A gypsy man who has been arrested for stealing. The latter was in the Preston household and claimed to see a man.

Several years earlier, Mrs Preston had given evidence at a trial about being blackmailed. Her husband knew nothing about her infidelity and Goff was the blackmailer who was imprisoned.

Now released from prison, Inspector Durrant has Goff followed and hopes that he makes a mistake.

This is a good example of an economical short which even shows how Goff hoped to get away with the crime.

Simple, but effective.

Scotland Yard's Inspector Durrant has his work cut out, dealing with the murder of a woman, Mrs Preston, who was discovered fatally injured by her husband, and the sudden appearance of a man who's seemingly suffering with amnesia.

Ok, so it wasn't particularly challenging to put two and two together, and work out who the guilty party was.

I wonder if amnesia was a condition that would have been well known to audiences in 1954, anyhow the theme is well used here.

It's hard not to be mindful of the array of English accents on display, all RP, not even The Gypsy could muster a Regional accent, it's quite amusing.

It looks pretty good, it's well filmed and nicely edited. Some really wonderful shots of London, it looked so incredibly different.

6/10.

Marital thriller of presumed infidelity

Gordon Bell (1910-1998) was one of those British characters who had small roles in big films and big roles in small films. Here he plays an inspector working on a case of dead woman discovered by her husband. Thw story is a slight one, but the episode manages to convey the series' messages on the importance of fidelity and truth in marriage as the basis of social cohesion.
