Clumsy Series with Terrible Ending
moonmonday8 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Well, at least it's short, right? Unfortunately that doesn't really help it.

The fact is, most of the episodes try to contribute to the main story, which is unpleasant, unlikable, and not really all that coherent. If it had simply been an episodic 'heroes versus evil space pirates' show, it might have come off as formulaic but watchable; as it is, it attempts to be something much more ambitious than the ability of anyone involved with it, and it fails in essentially every possible way.

They sometimes go to the trouble to try making characters interesting or engaging before clumsily writing them out, and the most egregious case of all is the main character, whose backstory is poorly-composed and confusing, not to mention outright asinine. The attempt to build up audience concern and tension is wasted by a non-resolution that doesn't even pay the audience back for their time and interest. In fact, it's more like the series ends with a two-fingered salute, plus raspberry, towards the audience who were all foolish enough to stick with it and expect something decent for their time.

Character designs are very good, though animation is uneven, which is really inexcusable in this kind of series. This was also made in the period where CG was dropped in arbitrarily and often came off as clumsy, although here it tends to look better than most of the time. The music is good, the Japanese voice acting is good, although as usual English voice acting is uneven and seems to take a dip near the end. I can assume the actors were as disappointed as the viewers when they found out how the series repaid them for their time.

All in all, this series doesn't deserve even a single viewing. Despite good character designs and good music, it's basically just riding on Outlaw Star's coattails...and I didn't even like Outlaw Star that much in the first place. Angel Links is nowhere near as interesting, and it manages even to have blatant inconsistencies between itself and the series from which it was spun off! Give it a miss. There's a reason why this series is usually rated so low. It's not even mediocre. It's a barely passable effort that's tarted up with some all right special effects and good music, which fails completely to fulfill its promise.

Unless you consider its promise one of disappointment and an unnecessarily and jarringly unfulfilling non-resolution, in which case it comes through perfectly.

In no way "Outlaw Star", but yet "Angel Links" has its merits

Ok, it is true that "Guardian Force: Angel Links" takes place in the same universe as "Outlaw Star". You do see two characters from O.S., Dragonite Duuz and Valeria Vertone, plus cameos by Fred Lowe, Tao Masters, the bartender and waitress from Sentinel III, and some others... but that's where the likeness ends. Gone are the days of grappler ship combat (however, the Angel Links ship does get attacked by pirates using grappler ships), and gone is the crew of the Outlaw Star.

The animation isn't as good, and it features pretty awful computer animation for some effects.

However, there is a good story and some interesting characters. The main character, Meifon Li, the well-endowed 16 owner of the Links Security group, is funny, fierce, and very lovable. Her crew is also colorful, and soon it has the family feeling you got with the crew of the Outlaw Star. Kosei, Meifon's assistant, is another great character, the voice of reason and logic.

Dragonite Duuz and Valeria Vertone have been significantly improved. Duzz is now shown armed with a sword, and he is a master at combat. He believes in a code of honor and valor. Valeria is the tough military commander. The two create a force to be reckoned with.

Overall, the show gets a 7.5 out of 10. Duuz, Kosei, and Meifon are the golden characters here. The series in only 13 episodes long, but trust me there is a main story unfolding here, but I won't ruin it. It is quite dramatic from what I've seen, and I can't wait to see the last 3 episodes.

Craptacular

The laughs were mostly unintended. A surprising amount of melodrama and poor writing with rather poor animation. The music was pretty good though. Although the series (13 episodes) was not good, I got a good laugh out of it - but again that was not what the creators were aiming aiming at. The characters were mostly unlikeable, and why was there a space cat with bat wings for ears living in the main characters cleavage? And why did the cleavage dwelling cat turn into a rather ill designed magical sword on occasion? Questions that will haunt me to my grave no doubt. But I did laugh rather frequently. So, you are warned, enter at your own risk into this series. Also, I did rather like Outlaw Star, which this is a dubious spin off of.

Angel Links
SoulfulFX9 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This series is a spin off from the anime series 'Outlaw Star'. Angel Links is a private security firm patrolling space at the behest of smaller businesses needing protection from pirates. For those who have seen 'Outlaw Star', you'll recognize the style and terminology immediately (and Fred Luo makes a cameo right off in Episode 1, watch the party). The main force is lead by a magical imbued 16 year old girl named Meifon Li. In her team are the usual cast of teammates in this sort of series and 'Outlaw Star' fans will see a couple faces and hear a few voices that will ring bells from the episode where the Outlaw Star runs into the Angel Links space station (Valera, Duuz). Overall, the story is a little less focused than 'Outlaw Star' (Takehito Ito helped but wasn't the story creator), but for fans of the series, 'Angel Links' basically provides more stories in the same setting.

A sci-fi reminiscent

While part of the Outlaw Star universe Angel Links is a spin off that is like a galaxy of it's own. I liked the character designs even though Mei Fon is a little too well endowed for a 16 year old. Deux is my personal favorite character in the show, he says something seriously and it just sounds a little amusing to me.

The ship designs retain that Outlaw Star look to some extent (actually they also remind me of the ships from and old RPG years ago "Star Frontiers", ah the memories of youth :). There are very few grappler ships in Angel Links which is probably for the best, technically the speed and range space combat would be done at makes a grappler ship impractical.
