The March issue of Asahi Shimbun’s Nemuki+ magazine, which was published on Feb 13, 2024, revealed exciting news for fans of Junji Ito, as it announced that the horror manga series Tomie is getting a new one-shot.
Titled Tomie: Control, it will be published in the upcoming issue of the magazine on April 12, 2024.
To commemorate the release of the new one-shot, Junji Ito will be drawing a new Tomie cover illustration for the magazine.

Back in 2019, it was announced that Adult Swim‘s Toonami was teaming up with Production I.G. for a four part animated mini-series adaptation of Junji Ito’s horror manga Uzumaki – an animated mini-series that would be presented in black and white, just like the manga source material. A couple years later, a teaser trailer arrived online… and then it was said that the premiere of the show had been delayed so director Hiroshi Nagahama and the production team could have more time to “replicate the quality of the intricate designs and detailed line work of Mr. Ito’s classic manga”. Uzumaki still doesn’t have a premiere date, but a trailer for the mini-series has been released, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Scripted by Aki Itami, the mini-series will tell the following story: Kurozu-cho, a small fog-bound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed.

There are a ton of bloody films out there, some of them more fun than others. Many of them were clearly made for gore hounds, and some come from pretty surprising places. Of course, the goriest films ever made change all the time as new movies keep aiming at beating that record, so every year, this could be a whole new list. These are a few of our favorite films with the highest amount of fake blood used during production:
Braindead aka Dead Alive (1992)
This horror comedy from Peter Jackson is a longtime favorite for many horror fans for the sheer amount of blood and gore seen throughout the film. The ear falling into a bowl of soup may be the grossest scene in the film, it’s definitely not the bloodiest by far. One of the most famous gore sequences in horror cinema comes from this film is the one where lead Lionel,...

It must be very, very strange to be Junji Ito. Given what comes out of the celebrated manga artist's head, I can only imagine what all happens in it. Best known as the writer of Tomie and Uzumaki, Ito has a loyal worldwide cult for his off-kilter horror works and that cult has embraced the recent animated adaptation of his Gyo with open arms.A story that imagines what would happen if all the fish in the world suddenly sprouted legs and moved to dry land - imagine a great white shark ambling down your street - Gyo has been a hit on the festival circuit and is about to be released on DVD in the UK on the Terrorcotta imprint. Which means, yes, new...

Director: Takayuki Hirao. Review: Adam Wing. It’s probably not a question you’ve asked yourself before, but what would happen if all the fish in the world sprouted legs and walked on dry land? That’s the question morbid manga master Junji Ito (Uzumaki, Tomie) posed when he created Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack. Takayuki Hirao directs this lively adaptation of Ito’s manga, an anarchic animation that reeks of the ‘death stench’, a revolting smell first encountered when mutant fish bring a city to its knees. As you’ve probably guessed by the rest of the title, Gyo finds our frenzied fishy friends leaving the ocean behind in favour of big city life, causing chaos, confusion and devastation wherever they go. We first meet Kaori in Okinawa, where giant mutant sharks with metal legs are attacking her and her friends in their holiday home. When she loses touch with her boyfriend,...

Screened at the 2012 Terracotta Far East Film Festival. “Gyo” is an Ova anime adaptation of the horror manga by popular artist Junji Ito, the mad genius best known for the likes of “Tomie” and “Uzumaki”. Directed by Takayuki Hirao, the film is a lunatic tale which revolves around the bizarre concept of horrible smelling fish with sharp, talon like legs emerging from the sea and laying waste to Japan. Kicking off in Okinawa, the story focuses on a young woman called Kaori, who is attacked by the creatures while on holiday with her friends. Although they survive, she loses contact with her boyfriend Tadashi back in Tokyo, and fearing the worst heads to the capital, only to find it overrun by the fish and their monstrous ‘death stench’. Although the idea of legged, murderous sealife may sound weird enough, this really is just the tip of a particularly crazed and fetid iceberg,...

Anime studio ufotable are bringing morbid manga master Junji Ito's putrid, and surreal, story of mutant zombie fish that sprout legs and attack Okinawa, Japan, to home video systems everywhere later this month.Ok. Wrapped your head around that concept yet, readers? It's eccentric to say the least. That's right,Gyo, that bizarr-o survival horror tale of a couple vs. bio-mechanical fart propelled rotting sea-life, is now a new Ova directed by Takayuki Hirao (Futakoi Alternative), and slated for release on Feb. 15'th. Ito is probably most well-known as the creator of a couple of classic horror mangas, Tomie, and my personal favorite, Uzumaki. Both have been brought to the screen in live action incarnations, the Tomie manga spawning a long running series of films, about...

The surreal stylised start of Tomie: Unlimited is characteristic of Noboru Iguchi's films (2008's Machine Girl and 2010's Mutant Girls Squad). From the slow-motion union of two sisters, Iguchi quickly gets the blood flowing when a metal cross from a construction site falls and impales big sis, Tomie (Miu Nakamura).
A year after the accident, Tsukiko (Moe Arai) is still having hideous nightmares and her parents are shown ritualistically singing “Happy Birthday” to their deceased daughter, reflecting on where she'd be in her life if she were still alive. Seconds after finishing this bizarre memorial, the doorbell rings and Tomie's ghost matter-of-factly says “I'm your sister”.
While parents blubber and Tsukiko suffers from shock, all the returned Tomie can say is “I'm starving”. This reincarnated Tomie looks the same but is a crueler somewhat more demanding version, smashing a picture of herself, encouraging her father to savagely...

Tomohiro Kubo directs Tomie Vs. Tomie, available on-line via Japan Flix and one of several films loosely based on Junji Ito’s manga Tomie. This film is validation of the power of women and is a perfect Japanese example of the perils of loving girls, even when they’re babies. The film opens with the most universally recognized torture device, a cruel hypodermic needle poised to puncture and loaded with viscous red fluid. The unlucky recipient of the wicked poke remains unrevealed for now, but an infant is howling and folded skin is everywhere across the screen.

The Japanese film site Cinema Today has posted a trailer for Noboru Iguchi’s upcoming J-horror film, Tomie Unlimited. This marks the eighth film based on Junji Ito’s long-running manga series, and Iguchi has stated that it will be very loyal to the grotesque nature of the source material.
Although the film itself will be rated R-15+ in theaters due to extreme situations—which would seem to back up Iguchi’s assertion—the trailer has been toned down a bit to be safe for younger viewers.
Former gravure idol Miu Nakamura plays Tomie, a seductive schoolgirl who causes men to fall in love with her and go completely insane with jealousy and possessiveness. She has been killed and dismembered several times in the past, but always regenerates from remaining body parts to begin the process all over again.
Moe Arai co-stars as a girl named Tsukiko whose sister has seemingly returned from the dead.

Arai plays Tsukiko, a girl whose older sister is revived after an accident. 19-year-old actress and occasional manga creator Miu Nakamura will play Tomie herself. Director Noboru Iguchi - best known for Machine Girl & Robo Geisha - began shooting the film back on September 23. Since 1999, there have been seven live-action theatrical Tomie films and one live-action television adaptation.

While an American redo of Tomie never quite took off (although one was in development), director Noboru Iguchi is keeping the franchise afloat in Japan with Tomie: Unlimited . Based on the popular Manga by Junji Ito, the first film in the series - about a school girl who can never die - hit in 1999 and was followed by six more chapters. Igushi, the latest director to contribute to the series, also helmed Machine Girl . Twitch got the scoop on the plot synopsis: Tsukiko, who belongs to a photography club at high school, always feels inferior to her sister, Tomie. Tomie is very beautiful and popular with male students. But one day, Tomie dies in an awful accident right under Tsukiko's nose. Since then, Tsukiko suffers from a nightmare every night. One year passes and on...

Earlier today it was announced that Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl, RoboGeisha) has started filming a new entry in the ongoing Tomie horror film series called Tomie Unlimited and that 15-year-old model/actress Moe Arai was hand-picked the play the lead role.
There have been seven theatrically-released live-action Tomie films in total since 1999, taking the series right through the J-horror boom of the early 00s and beyond.
Based on a popular manga by Junji Ito, the films feature a malicious ghost/entity/whatever in the form of a seductive high school girl named Tomie. Every story involves Tomie using her supernatural ability to make men lust after her, eventually causing them to become irrational, jealous, and violent. Once Tomie’s true nature revealed, she usually ends up brutally murdered and dismembered (spoiler alert!), only to regenerate from whatever body parts remain and start all over again in the next film.

The official website for Shinji Higuchi‘s upcoming kaiju TV drama MM9 (short for Monster Magnitude 9) has been updated with a 30-second TV spot. Unfortunately, there are no actual monsters to be seen, but you gotta love Anna Ishibashi‘s delayed thumbs up at the end.
Based on a story by sci-fi writer Hiroshi Yamamoto, the show centers around a special “living creatures” division of the Japan Meteorological Agency which predicts the appearance of monsters. When an attack does occur, a team of monster specialists called “Kitokutai” is sent to the front lines, even if the Japan Self-Defense Force is unavailable. As ordinary public servants, these unsung heroes have no weapons, and must rely only their skills, knowledge, and experience to minimize the damage caused by monsters.
Ishibashi (17) and Machiko Ono (28) are the show’s two main stars. Ishibashi plays Sakura Fujisawa, a rookie member of the team, and Ono plays Mikazuki,...

Shinji Higuchi (44), known as the “Heisei special effects king” for his work on the Heisei era Gamera trilogy, is supervising the production of his first TV drama. The show is called MM9 (Monster Magnitude 9) and is set in an alternate version of modern-day Japan in which monster attacks are the norm and are treated as another form of natural disaster. The show is based on a story by sci-fi writer Hiroshi Yamamoto which was originally serialized in Tokyo Sogensha’s “Mysteries!” from 2005-2006 and published as a book in 2007.
The project was first hinted at through an April Fools joke which presented it as a “sci-fi epic” called XX9. Higuchi released a photo of the cast dressed up in traditional sci-fi outfits and wielding futuristic rifles.

More ghostly goings on than you can shake a bloodied stick at, the full Korean trailer for Japanese The Grudge spin-off movies “Old woman in White” “Girl in Black” is now available on the official site. The trail shows these two new instalments owe more to the earlier films than we originally thought - and whats all this girls severed head in a bag about?! A homage to Ataru Oikawa’s “Tomie”? We shall see. Both films open in Korean July 9th, so expect an English subtitled DVD release around September time.
