Dated documentary on '30s progress
Released as an extra on the Depression era DVD of King Vidor's OUR DAILY BREAD, this short documentary shows how new communities were being developed, mirroring the theme of the fiction feature.
To say that communal living, and alternatives to capitalism, is on the way out in America is an understatement. Certainly a large segment of the '60s so-called hippie movement included some back to nature experiments or even the new sexual communes (and cults) like Sandstone and the good old Manson Family, but the notion of banding together and sharing one's future with strangers is truly passé, apart from I assume religious organizations (see: DIANETICS, etc.).
This documentary is not very enlightening on the '30s version of this, mandated by some New Deal funding. Some of the footage here, including the narration, is also duplicated in better-known documentaries within the same DVD package.
