Isn't amusement purpose enough for a film?

I don't know that this film has any message that will deepen or enrich our lives; in fact, I very much doubt it has. If you find it entertaining, it's done its job. If not, then it hasn't. I enjoyed it considerably. The intricate entanglements of the men and women here were, more often than not, funny in a sardonic way. The performers are charming and the plot satisfactorily tangled. If there's supposed to be some thematic connection between the Pirandello production involving two of the film's characters, of which scenes are shown throughout, and the story in which they are contained, it escaped me...no, wait....The Pirandello play in question, "As You Desire Me," (as the title is usually rendered in English) may be connected. Each of the film's characters feels that the person with whom he or she is romantically involved is somehow lacking--at least compared to one of the other characters to which he or she is drawn...no, forget it. I would call this a pleasant jeu d'esprit of the kind that works like cotton candy; a brief sensation of pleasure and then...it's gone. But, compared to any number of recent releases, it is still more worthwhile than a majority of them. If you're in the market for moral seriousness, political punch, or action, forget it. But this film rates high for charm and smiles, if not belly laughs.
