The entire 400-episode catalog of true-crime unscripted series Forensic Files has been acquired by Content Partners.
Originally called Medical Detectives, the series ran for 14 seasons on TLC, Court TV and TruTV and repeats are still available on Warner Bros Discovery’s Hln. A revived version, Forensic Files II, has aired since 2020, first on Hln and now on Investigation Discovery. Since debuting in the wake of the O.J. CSI is partly owned by Content Partners.
Founded in 2005, Content Partners is an investment fund and asset management company that acquires the cash flows from intellectual property in film, television, music and other corners of media and entertainment. CNN is turning some of the lights out on its efforts to produce morning news.
The network is revamping its entire A.M. schedule as the Warner Bros. Discovery-based cable news outlet continues to grapple with poor ratings.
Poppy Harlow and Phil Mattingly, who co-anchor “CNN This Morning,” will leave the line-up, while Kasie Hunt’s early-morning program will take on an extra hour. Her show, “Early Start,” will run from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m., and will take on the “CNN This Morning” title. CNN will then move “CNN News Central,” anchored by John Berman, Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner, to a 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. slot, with Jim Acosta and Pamela Brown taking over new hours at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The new series finds Elsbeth in New York City tackling a new investigative role and working alongside the NYPD after leaving her successful legal career in Chicago.

This review contains spoilers for Gen V episode 4.
“The Whole Truth,” the fourth episode of Gen V, features a dick joke in its first act, a dick joke in its third act, and wedged in-between is a dick exploding like a bloody piñata. Ladies and gentlemen, The Aristocrats …. I mean, The Boys!
The Boys universe has always operated under the ironclad comedic principle of “pee-pees are funny” and Gen V seems to be continuing that tradition. And honestly, it’s hard to argue they’re wrong for doing so. Pee-pees are indeed funny! We’ve seen this borne out in the season 3 opener of the flagship series which saw shrinking supe Termite entering an actual human penis and inadvertently blowing it up (along with the body it belongs to) by a sneeze-triggered rapid growth. Just last week on Gen V we saw another shrinking supe Emma (Lizze Broadway) engage with...

You might call it CNN Headline News — for the streaming era.
Warner Bros. Discovery plans to unveil a 24/7 live-streamed news service called “CNN Max” on September 27, and indicated the outlet would focus initially on breaking news. Anchors including Jim Acosta, Rahel Solomon, Amara Walker, Fredricka Whitfield and Jim Sciutto have been given assignments, with Sciutto set to lead breaking news in the afternoons. Bianna Golodryga and Christiane Amanpour could also have roles, according to a person familiar with the situation.
CNN has fallen far behind its rivals when it comes to streaming, with Warner scuttling a nascent subscription-based streaming outlet, CNN+, last year. As the company recalibrated CNN’s strategy, however, MSNBC, Fox News Channel, ABC News and CBS News have all had opportunities to establish new programming for the broadband set, and to experiment while refining their brands in the space. Free streaming platforms like LG Channels seemingly add new channels all the time. There are more than 1,500 free ad-supported TV (Fast) channels available in the United States alone, and the amount of time consumers spent watching these channels increased in April, despite it normally being a period where TV watching decreases across the industry.
One thing Fast platforms don’t normally offer, however, are a lot of is live sports. But users of the free streaming service LG Channels will see that change this month, as the service is adding several live events to the schedule on the NCAA Championships Channel (channel 100), including tennis, lacrosse, and track and field events from both the NCAA’s Division II and Division III.
The live sporting events coming to the NCAA Championships Channel starting May 17 include:
Date Time (Et) Event Wednesday, May 17 12 noon Diii Women’s Team Tennis Finals Sunday, May 21 2 p.m.

Good luck trying to slow Sling Freestream down. The hub for free ad-supported TV (Fast) channels added 16 new channels during the last week of March, and apparently liked that number so much that it is replicating the addition this week. “I’d go on a seven-minute rant with a repetitive melody,” Lana Del Rey recently told Billie Eilish in an interview about her writing process for Did You Know There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. Indeed, many of the songs on her newly released ninth album do fit that description. They are long and can be repetitive, but truly, a rant has never sounded so alluring.
The six-time Grammy nominee, née Elizabeth Grant, returns this week with her latest album, two years on from a double release in 2021 (Chemtrails Over the Country Club and Blue Banisters). Across eight records and 11 years, Del Rey has built a world and iconography of her own. Hers is one of cherry cola cans, white sundresses, sycamore trees, seedy dive bars and American flags that fly both defiantly and depressingly. More controversial in the Lana lexicon are the deadbeat boyfriends with fast fists that feel like kisses.

Sling TV, the internet-streaming division of Dish Network, is doubling down on free, ad-supported streaming television (Fast) and free, ad-supported VOD — looking to beef up its offering for consumers who balk at paying a monthly subscription fee.
The redubbed Sling Freestream is launching with 210 free channels and 41,000-plus on-demand titles. It’s a rebranding — and expansion— of Sling Free, which has been its free, live TV streaming service with some 150 channels and AVOD selections. In addition, Sling Freestream users can subscribe to more than 50 standalone streaming services, including AMC+, Discovery+, MGM+ and Paramount’s Showtime.
With Freestream, Sling is trying to lower the barrier to entry even further, by eliminating the requirement that users create an account to be able to start streaming free content. And by the end of this spring, Sling Freestream is on track to offer more than 400 channels, said Gary Schanman, group president of Sling TV.

Dish’s Sling TV on Thursday launched a new free advertising-supported streaming television (Fast) service dubbed Sling Freestream.

The company previously provided Sling Free, a free, live TV streaming service with around 150 channels and selective advertising VOD offerings.
Unveiled on Sling’s eighth anniversary and “National Cut the Cord Day,” Freestream is available through the Sling app on Roku devices and is also being rolled out across LG, Samsung, Vizio and other devices, “providing customers a no-barrier entry point to high-quality programming without any payment or credit card required,” the company said.

Like so many business success stories, FilmRise started with a huge failure.
It was 2009, and City Lights Media, the TV production and distribution company founded and run by Danny Fisher and his brother Jack, had just gone bust. The company was nearly 30 years old and an industry staple, the producer of dozens of shows, including the Food Network hit Chopped, and home to one of the biggest postproduction operations in New York. It had more than 400 employees.
But City Lights didn’t survive the financial crash. The company was heavily leveraged, with some 15 million in debt personally guaranteed by Danny. When the world’s economy pancaked, he was forced to file for personal bankruptcy. His savings were wiped out. He was left with 1,700 in his checking account and no idea what to do next.
“I was luckier than most,” says Fisher. “My wife, Barbara, was still working as a psychologist.

Al Brown, the actor best known for his role as Major Stanislaus Valchek in the acclaimed HBO crime series "The Wire," has died at the age of 83. Brown's daughter, Jenny, informed TMZ that he passed away on Friday, January 13, 2023, as a result of Alzheimer's disease. She said that Brown had loved his job and was always happy to chat with fans about his role on the show.

Viewers have turned to the cable network Hln over the years for a quick-hit version of its sister, CNN; for coverage of court cases; for Robin Meade’s long-running morning news shows; and for a bevy of true-crime programs, including Nancy Grace’s primetime talk show and repeats of “Forensic Files.” What it will be recognized for over the months to come is anybody’s guess.
CNN — and, by proxy, its corporate parent, Warner Bros. Discovery — nearly gutted the cable outlet Thursday by cancelling Meade’s “Morning Express,” which has been on the air in some form or another since 2001. The company also declared that it would not longer produce new live programming for the network and that Kathleen Finch, not CNN chief Chris Licht, would take over the true-crime shows, which would be made part of another cable outlet, ID, known for similar stuff. CNN’s cost-cutting efforts are expected to have significant effects on the cable network Hln, according to four people familiar with the matter, with potential ramifications for one of the nation’s longest-running morning programs.
Hln, the cable network once known as CNN Headline News, is home to a bevy of true-crime series, endless showings of “Forensic Files,” and “Morning Express with Robin Meade,” with a host who has been at the network since 2001. Now, all of that is under the microscope. In addition, a number of popular correspondents and journalists were terminated from the Warner Bros. Discovery backed outlet Thursday.
CNN will no longer produce live programs for Hln, according to one of these people, and will simulcast “CNN This Morning” in place of “Morning Express,” the A.M. news program that takes up most of Hln’s daytime schedule. Hln’s true-crime programming will be placed under the...

There’s a lot of mystery in “Forensic Files,” but not too much behind the decision by the cable network that airs the series to keep it going longer.
CNN has renewed its license with the long-running series’ original producer, Medstar, to produce new episodes of “Forensic Files II” through 2024, according to Nancy Duffy, senior vice president of program development for CNN, and executive producer of the series. “It’s a real binge-worthy kind of vehicle,” she says, in an interview — and fares well in both linear showings and on the streaming platforms of parent company Warner Bros. Discovery.
Hln will run eight new half-hour episodes as part of its renewal pact. In the first new one, a 24-year-old old criminology student who left a SoHo bar intoxicated is found raped, murdered handcuffed, gagged, and wrapped in a blanket alongside a road in East New York, Brooklyn. True crime has taken over the world. Documentaries as a whole are the fastest-growing segment of the streaming market, and true crime is where most of that interest derives. It's not exactly new. "Dateline" has been spinning yarns about shocking suburban murders for decades. But the technology is finally here for so many more upstart filmmakers to nab Netflix-approved cameras and dive into these stories.
It's still odd so many people find it soothing to flip on a film about a horrifying real-life crime right before bed — but not inexplicable. For one thing, procedurals like "Forensic Files" have always had a somatic...

David E. Kelley has been a TV legend since the ’80s — and he’s shown no signs of stopping, being responsible for some of the most-discussed television shows of the last few years, thanks to hits such as “Big Little Lies,” “The Undoing,” and “Nine Perfect Strangers.” Now, Kelley is hoping to replicate his more recent successes at HBO and Hulu via “The Missing,” a new crime drama series that is slated to premiere on Peacock.
Peacock announced a straight-to-series order for “The Missing” on Monday. Kelley will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer on the eight-episode series, which is based on the international bestselling novel “The Missing File,” the first in a series of books written by Israeli crime writer Dror A. “JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass” lives up to its title. Directed by Oliver Stone, it’s a kind of documentary companion-piece sequel to “JFK,” and yes, it takes you through the looking glass again. There are moments when it gives you that heady, tingling, oh-my-God-i-have-seen-the-truth-that-was-hidden! sensation of revelatory immersion, the kind that hits you when you’re confronted with an autopsy photo in which a wound is said to have mysteriously disappeared, or when you’re staring at a declassified page from the Warren Commission Report in which Gerald Ford, with a few penciled-in words, literally shifts by six inches the place where the first bullet entered JFK. At moments like that, you feel the frisson of the junkie-hit injections that conspiracy theory is built upon. They’re the moments you can feel yourself slipping through the looking glass, or down the rabbit hole, or wherever else it is...

The O.G. of TV true crime has returned. Before there was Making a Murderer, Tiger King, The Jinx, and Serial, the nation’s fix for real-life murder tales came in weekly doses courtesy of Unsolved Mysteries, which ran interrupted from 1987 to 2002. Since the series left airwaves, the genre has grown into a powerhouse: Some networks dedicate their entire programming slate to it (hi, Oxygen), and streaming services rely on true-crime for viral hits.

In 1987, host Robert Stack informed and frightened a generation as host of the series “Unsolved Mysteries.” Using both re-enactments with actors (including a pre-fame Matthew McConaughey) and Stack’s sonorous voice, viewers were told two stories a week, ranging from murders and abductions, to the reunification of families, to supernatural examinations of haunted houses and ghosts.
Every week I watched, I’d be frightened — and inspired that I, too, could help solve a mystery. The series changed networks and timeslots before being canceled in 2002; Robert Stack passed away in 2003. A short-lived reboot hosted by Dennis Farina ran from 2008 to 2010. The afterlife has been kind to the original show; there was a syndicated run Lifetime; it is available on PlutoTV; updated episodes are streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 3, episode 13 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired April 22 on Fox.

Peacock is then slated to be available across the U.S. on July 15 — while NBCU is mulling the possibility of moving that up sooner — in various three tiers across mobile, web and connected-tv devices: paid with ads ($4.99 monthly); paid with no ads ($9.99 monthly); and completely free with ads with a truncated content lineup. With the national launch, Comcast (and Cox) subscribers also will have the option to get an ad-free version of the service for an additional $5 per month.

Comcast has acquired Xumo, the ad-supported free streaming service, on Tuesday, for an undisclosed price.
The Irvine-based company offers 10,000 free movies and shows, as well 190 channels, including Fox Sports, ABC News, and channels dedicated to series like “Family Feud” and “Forensic Files.”
To get that content to the masses, Xumo has an app, but it’s best known for its partnerships with smart TV makers like LG, where customers will plug in their TVs and see Xumo’s list of channels automatically installed. After signing new deals with Sony and Panasonic in January, Xumo CEO Colin Petrie-Norris told TheWrap earlier this month “over 90% of all smart TVs now carry Xumo’s service in some way, shape or form.”

CNN’s Headline News, or Hln, is further embracing its true crime-loving audience by launching a podcast, “Down the Hill: The Delphi Murders,” about the unsolved murders of Abigail Williams and Liberty German.
Hln, known for a mix of live news shows like “Morning Express” and crime-related series like “Forensic Files,” serves an audience that is tuned into true crime themed. The eight-part podcast is hosted by Hln producers Barbara MacDonald and Drew Iden, who will use the weekly program to look at a variety of aspects of the horrific crime that took the lives of adolescent girls Abigail Williams and Liberty German in the small town of Delphi, Indiana three years ago.
The two girls went hiking on a trail, but we’re never to be seen again. Their bodies were discovered a day later at Monon High Bridge trail. A recording of the girls’ murderer was found on German’s phone,...

Hln is about to shed light on one of TV’s great mysteries.
For nearly a decade, Hln has shown repeats of “Forensic Files,” a catch-the-bad-guy documentary series that hinges on investigators’ ability to find clues in the tiniest details, such as an errant long hair spotted at the murder scene or a small insect found on the victim’s corpse. The series is so popular that the network – a sister outlet to CNN – typically airs 65 to 70 hours of the reruns each week. And yet, for some reason, no one has ever added new episodes to the stack of hundreds that already exist.
Hln has managed to crack the case. After vying with other outlets to get new episodes made, the AT&T-owned network plans to roll out 16 new, half-hour episodes starting in February 2020, according to Ken Jautz, the CNN executive vice president who oversees Hln.

Well, here's a fun read for ya: stars are literally naming their vaginas after the last TV show they watched. Yes, this has become an actual thing after comedian Whitney Cummings posted a photo on Instagram that read, "Your vagina is now named after the title of the last TV show you watched . . . What is it?" Whitney kicked off the game by revealing hers is The Good Place. Since she shared the post, quite a few celebrities have joined in on the fun, commenting with their vagina's new moniker. Lucky for us, the account Comments by Celebs compiled some of the best answers.
Naturally, many of the responses are absolutely hilarious. Some are a bit sinister, including Gwyneth Paltrow's - who had watched Forensic Files - and Courteney Cox's - who watched Netflix's Evil Genius. Others are purely comical, such as Kaley Cuoco naming her vagina The Big Bang Theory...
