We could think of other minor and low budget war features such as LE FRANC TIREUR, shot only two years before but only released in 2002, when we watch this movie. A film shot in the deep country side, on natural location, as was LE FRANC TIREUR, with very few characters. But, unlike the Jean Max Causse's movie, this one is more lightly made, far less dramatic, and especially no realistic at all. How a soldier, during the spring of 1940, when the Nazi armies invaded France, could desert in such a easy way ? We have here the ballad scheme, where our lead crosses empty roads, fields, deserted farms, encounters some folks from time to time, even some kind of hippies making love in the middle of a field. I know 1968 May is still fresh in the French culture, but this story is supposed to take place during 1940...It's absolutely silly but entertaining, especially if you love the deep France and foresee your next summer vacations... We can see it as a sort of anti war flick. Yes, we can. But I guess we can appreciate it in many other ways, such as an existentialist tale. Characters taken one by one are interesting. I don't think that every soldier who fought in France during the 1940 campaign could recognize themselves in this offbeat film. Watch closely every situation and you will laugh, but why not? A downbeat ending.
