Maria Bamford, the star of perhaps Netflix’s most truly original comedy, went fully nude in the first episode of “Lady Dynamite,” just for funsies. “There are so many male nude scenes that I think are funny. I just — I’m older, I don’t give a shit,” she said, with a laugh, to IndieWire.
The scene features Bamford dodging attempts to pixelize her naughtiest bits, in an effort to (as one of her pet pugs explains in voice-over) celebrate “body positivity.” That’s an absurd sentence to write, out of context. But it fits perfectly with the mindset that drives “Lady Dynamite,” which features Bamford as a somewhat fictionalized version of herself, dealing with the pitfalls and pratfalls of the entertainment industry in a heightened reality where dogs can talk, the boundaries of space and time don’t matter, and, really, why shouldn’t a 40-something woman strut around naked?...

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Better Call Saul” Season 3, Episode 7, “Expenses.”]
Last Week’S Review: Watch Out, World, Because Saul Goodman is Coming
Case Summary
After celebrating what felt like a victory last week, it’s now time for Jimmy to accept the consequences for his year-long suspension, which are far tougher than he anticipated. Trying to balance his required community service hours with his fledgling business as a producer and director of local commercials isn’t working out all that well — he’s running himself ragged and going broke in the process. What matters most to him is making sure that Kim has no clue just how bad things are getting… though he’s not above a petty moment of revenge against Chuck, as much as he might say that he’s moving on.
Meanwhile, we get a blast from the more-recent-than-usual past: Nacho decides to pay “Saul” Season 2’s resident prescription drug scammer/baseball enthusiast Pryce (Daniel Wormald) a visit,...

History is written in blood by tooth and claw and gunpowder, and no recent film makes that point with more graphic impact than "The Revenant." Based on a novel that tells the story of Hugh Glass, a fur trapper who was attacked by a bear and then left for dead by the men who were supposed to tend to him, the film is a testament to punishment, both in terms of the story being told onscreen and in terms of what it must have taken to wrestle the film up onto the screen. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has been an expert chronicler of human suffering so far in his career, and it makes his films difficult emotional experiences. I still remember that sinking feeling I got when I saw "Amores Perros" in the theater the first time. I felt it again during "Babel" and again during last year's "Birdman." Innaritu seems...

Chicago – “Do you ever wonder if the things that are meant to connect us … actually disconnect us?” This cheesy hypothesis as found in many millennial dramas has only caused the film world go to in circles about the quandary of handheld screens and social media. The Nxt debut of Fergal “Prince” Devitt is imminent, possibly at the Nxt tapings that are taking place today in the Orlando area. He has a new name too: Finn Balor.
Here’s some info on the possible origin: “Finn is a name of Irish origin that translates into “fair.” The name Balor comes from Irish Mythology as Balor was the name of the monarch of the Formorians, a race of giants who ruled Ireland before the arrival of the Tuatha De Danann, the gods worshiped by the Celts & Druids before the rise of Christianity. Balor was essentially a Cyclops, a giant with a single eye in the center of his forehead, and was viewed as the God of drought & blight. The Fault in Our Stars movie poster just came out, and bears a tagline that has some people up in arms.
'One Sick Love Story' Tagline Sparks Controversy
In the poster, Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, playing cancer stricken teens Hazel and Gus, lie in the grass with their heads touching. Atop the intimate pose of the lovelorn couple is the movie title – and the controversial movie tagline “one sick love story.” Some find the phrase problematic, an ill-conceived joke about cancer and the romance between two sick individuals.
The Fault in Our Stars is a filmic adaptation of author John Green’s book of the same name. Green, who knows the characters and the tone of the story better than anyone, finds the tagline far from offensive. In fact, Green thinks it’s perfectly suitable, organic even, to the story he wanted to tell.

Contagion
Written by Scott Z. Burns
Directed by Steven Soderbergh
USA, 2011
The most unsettling element of Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion (which is, by any metric, a deeply discomfiting film) is its plausibility. The film has a clinical approach that underlines how possible its central crisis is and how powerless we would be to stop it. The film has a global scope and an all-star cast, but what resonates most is the idea that this could happen. Anywhere. Anytime. To any one of us.
Contagion is a film about connections, the ways they can harm us, and how they may ultimately be the key to our salvation. It is Beth’s (Gwyneth Paltrow) connection to a former lover that helps the disease spread more quickly. It is her betrayal of her husband (Matt Damon) that facilitates his developing paranoia and isolation during the outbreak. The connections help a global cadre of doctors (including Marion Cotillard,...

The most unexpected thing about The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Him and Her that may surprise audiences once it actually gets completed and released is how strangely conventional it seems while watching it. To some, this will no doubt prove disappointing: those expecting some monumental shakeup of cinematic expression that announces itself as a game changer should go watch Gravity or something. Those dreading the prospect of a three-hour cerebral slog of a movie are going to be pleased by how personal, emotional, entertaining and generally engaging the film is despite its ambitious premise.
What screened at Tiff has been labeled as a “work in progress,” and after the film was purchased at the festival by Harvey Weinstein, many are speculating that its runtime will be cut significantly in hopes of reaching a wider audience. It’s not safe for work, but there’s nothing in the new trailer for Blue is the Warmest Color that hints at its Nc-17 rating. Some flirtation, romance, a little nude modeling and vicious fighting make it look like a typical mature story, but after it’s powerful debut at Cannes, it’s impossible to escape knowing that it’s a fairly explicit film. Naturally that’s earned the film from Abdellatif Kechiche starring Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos as star cross’d lovers the strongest slap possible from the MPAA. Granted, all it really takes to earn an Nc-17 from that august body is to admit that gay people exist in the first place (let alone, gasp, showing them kissing or having sex). It’s a good thing the film and potential fans have found a champion in Jonathan Sehring because according to Variety, the president of Sundance Selects and IFC Films is refusing to...

When it comes to finding where you belong, "What Matters Most" is surrounding yourself with people who care and love you; this theme is forever present in Warehouse 13 as a series, but this installment really put the motif to the test, as the bad news and confessions just kept coming.
Nick being right in the middle of the Warehouse family was something I didn’t see coming. In hindsight, it makes perfect sense for Nick to be Charlotte’s mole and I’m excited finally see some progress on the longer story arcs. Plus, Nick being the mole gives a very meaty story to Claudia.
Claudia wanted to pay forward the chance Artie took on her, and - no matter how Claudia tries to portray herself - she is an incredibly trusting and emotional person. On one hand, Claudia really embraced another step in her maturation process and demonstrated...

Over the last couple of years, a burgeoning trend within the Walt Disney Company is their ever-growing willingness to buy every remnant of your childhood. A few years ago, Disney officially bought Pixar Animation Studios, and between then and now, Disney became the owners of Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios. If it’s a cinematic touchstone of your childhood, Disney most likely owns it partially or wholly now. For some people, though, Disney working with and distributing outside animated movies goes well beyond Buzz Lightyear, Dory the tang, and Pixar’s other iconic characters. Though the Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli was cranking out classics before Pixar, it’s through Pixar that Ghibli’s films got an even wider international audience.
This week, Disney’s finally releasing two of Ghibli’s most well-known films on Blu-ray for the first time in North America: My Neighbor Totoro and Howl’s Moving Castle.

The 1970s are a scary decade because everything appears the same on the surface, cars, clothes, technology, so we can relate to what we see, yet somehow it has an otherworldly atmosphere. At times the seventies can seem like a strange, beige parallel universe where cholesterol was for sissies and sideburns mandatory (less so for women). With its most recent trailer The Conjuring, set in 1971, embraces this idea wholeheartedly.
Warner Bros. are pushing The Conjuring hard – and with good reason. It is directed by James Wan who made the original Saw (2004) and even more impressively Insidious, which was officially the most profitable movie of 2011. If this man wants to make a film about a real life paranormal investigator couple set in the most stylish decade of all time, we have to assume he is on to something. And from the looks of the footage so far The Conjuring seems less...

One of the year's biggest music successes wasn't defined by millions of record sales, arena tours or even a controversial headline. He simply released a music video.
Korean entertainer Psy became a worldwide sensation with his video for "Gangnam Style," a cheeky commentary on a wealthy Korean district in South Korea rapped entirely in Korean. It's humorous, over-the-top and includes a signature dance move that rivals the popularity of the Macarena.
Since the video's release in July, the video has surpassed Justin Bieber's "Baby" as the most-viewed clip on the internet, raking in approximately 990,900,000 views and counting.
By way of Australia, musician Gotye also hit it big this year with a hit single "Somebody That I Used to Know." Although strong sales helped bolster Wally De Backer's success, the 350 million views on YouTube for the music video also did wonders for the band's popularity. So much so that...

How often is it said that one person’s terrorist is another person’s freedom fighter? Maybe that is but a cliché which has emerged out of tired movie scripts. Be that as it may, most people in the world do claim entirely opinions on the nature of guerrilla fighters, their objectives and the strategies by which they go about achieving said objectives. It all depends on whose side the individual or group is fighting on that helps influence the nomenclature. What about someone who is literally fighting for themselves, who has no allies, no assistants, who operates as a recluse yet when he or she strikes, people pay attention? Monsters Club, from Japanese director Toshiaki Toyoda, takes a look at one such curious person, at what makes them tick and what might, just might, make them change their mind about their current lot?...

Barbra Streisand turns 70 today!
Last month marked the 50th anniversary of Streisand's career. Over five decades, Streisand has achieved 51 gold albums, won a Tony, two Oscars, five Emmys, and eight Grammy Awards.
In 2011 the celebrated singer released "What Matters Most", an album in which she sings the lyrics of Alan and Marilyn Bergman. In her latest film role, Streisand takes a road trip as the mother of Seth Rogen in the comedy "The Guilt Trip."
Streisand offered her thoughts on aging to Parade in 2009 saying: "You get older, and it's a bit of a shock. I still feel so young inside. And that's me in the mirror? It must be harder to age if you were known as a beauty queen. So I'm kind of fortunate. But, in truth, I'm happier than I ever was in my life. I have a husband who loves me, and I have this beautiful piece of the Earth.

But even though this won’t be seen by humans, here’s a personal reminder that this night may be about politics and back-slapping, but it’s also about the splendor of cinema. It’s about the magic of movies. The genius of thousands of images all strung together with blood, sweat and tears to create characters and a journey through the heart of a story. There...

Go to composer Michel Legrand's site and you'll be greeted by Barbra Streisand's newish rendition of one of his greatest hits, "The Windmills of Your Mind," originally composed for The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) — it won Legrand his first Oscar. This version opens Streisand's last album, What Matters Most, which, if you throw in the Deluxe Edition Bonus Disc, features eight more Legrand tunes. She's a fan. While Legrand won his second Oscar for his score for Summer of '42 (1971), it was Yentl (1983) that scored him his third win, plus two more nominations, one each for two songs Streisand sings in the film.
Les Films du Losange notes that Legrand turns 80 today, a fine occasion to remind ourselves that, before the "Windmills" years, Legrand worked with Godard (A Woman Is a Woman, Vivre sa vie, Band of Outsiders) and appeared in Agnès Varda's Cléo From 5 to 7 (1961) before he...

As expected, Michael Jackson's former doctor Conrad Murray has filed an appeal to challenge his involuntary manslaughter conviction.
According to TMZ, Murray filed the petition in pro per, which means he has decided to forego hiring legal representation and represent himself. He reportedly listed "Men's Central Jail" and his booking number in the space on the appeal document where a lawyer would normally list a firm's name or contact information.
TMZ also reported that although Murray seems to be without a lawyer, he is still in communication with Nareg Gourjian, one of the attorneys who represented him during his manslaughter trial.

Just when you think the .found footage. horror genre has reached the end of its rope, Paranormal Activity 3 rakes in north of $100 million at the domestic box office, sending studios into scramble mode to unearth the next hot property. Universal grabbed the rights to a spec script from Bryan Bertino, writer-director of The Strangers (with Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman), according to Deadline. Very little is known about the treatment other than the fact that it once circulated the town under the working title of Mockingbird, though that now has been dropped and a new title has yet to be attached. Also absent from the project is a director, as Deadline says Bertino will produce the film but likely not helm. The director shouldn.t be the issue. What matters most is the hook. The .found footage. genre has explored multiple avenues, some more realistic than others. And it...

HollywoodNews.com: Barbra Streisand still has it. She’s got a top 5 album this week with ”What Matters Most.” The CD– A strong collection of ballads written by lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman with a variety of composers–sold a little over 70,000 copies in its debut week. Not bad.. Among the songs Streisand covers is the couple’s tour de force, “Windmills of Your Mind,” and another classic winner, “That Face.”
All the tracks are produced with wit and class by Streisand herself. There’s no downside here, but it would be nice to hear Streisand attempt some more upbeat material, maybe with edgier arrangements. On “Windmills” she’s offered herself up accappella. It’s a terrific track. She should immediately allow a bunch of modern remixers take a crack at it–she could have a club hit.
Streisand doesn’t seem to realize that there’s a club record...
