Madonna‘s had an impressive array of No. 1 songs, but she’s also had something rarer: an impressive array of No. 2 songs. Some of her defining hits just missed the top spot. Here’s a nostalgic look back at some of the Queen Pop’s best musical (and music video) moments.
1. ‘Material Girl’
Considering “Material Girl”‘s great new wave beat and iconic music video inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, it would have been a hit regardless of its lyrics. The song is a cute satire of Reagan-era values that’s light enough to be taken at face value. Because some listeners did take it at face value, the song has been used to paint Madonna as shallow and greedy.
The track hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. While the charts are never fair, that placement feels like a real insult. After all, what song...

Iconic pop singer Madonna is known for her controversial antics. But even her fans can’t defend her mocking a disabled fan. Keep reading for all the details on her latest stunt.
“True Blue” Singer Faces Lawsuit Over Tour Behavior
Madonna has more than one reason to celebrate this year. June will mark one year since her scary medical emergency that had fans fearing for her life. In June 2023, the singer was found unresponsive and rushed to the ER. A serious bacterial infection kept her in a coma for two days.
She made a miraculous recovery but, unfortunately, had to postpone her tour. Four months after her hospitalization, she kicked off her Celebration tour, which celebrates Madonna’s four decades in the music industry. But the tour hit a minor snag after a class action suit was brought against the singer.

Inspiration for great music can come from the unlikeliest of places. Madonna’s “Open Your Heart” was inspired by a vegetarian restaurant and a server who worked there. One of the song’s co-writers said the track’s prominence was literally a dream come true.
Madonna’s ‘Open Your Heart’ was originally named after a restaurant
“Open Your Heart” was co-written by Madonna, Peter Rafelson, and Gardner Cole. During a 2005 interview with Madonna Tribe, Cole discussed the origin of the song. “The song was started with my good friend Peter Rafelson, we worked on the song for over a year,” he said. “The original title was ‘Follow Your Heart,’ which is the name of a vegetarian restaurant in Los Angeles. I was in love with a waitress there named Lisa, and she was the original inspiration for the lyrics.”
Cole recalled the Queen of Pop’s contribution to the song.

Madonna kicked off “The Celebration Tour” with the first of four performances at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday night.
A true retrospective performance, the career-spanning setlist touched on all eras of Madonna’s career and featured numerous songs that hadn’t been performed in decades. The show opened with only the second performance ever of “N0thing Really Matters” from Ray of Light. A few songs later, she dusted off “Live to Tell” from True Blue for the first time since 2006.
Songs like “Justify My Love,” “Bad Girl,” and “Rain” were performed for the first time sine 1993, while “Bedtime Story” was dusted off for the first time since 1995. Other noteworthy performances included “Like A Prayer,” in which she was accompanied by topless dancers, an acoustic cover of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” and “Like a Virgin,” which was interpolated elements of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”

Toward the end of boygenius’ headlining set at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 2, Phoebe Bridgers asked the sold-out crowd for a favor. Could we all put away our phones for the next song? Remarkably, all but a scattering of contrarians complied.
“I was emboldened to write this song because I knew we were going to do this band,” Bridgers said, in one of many references to the rock-solid friendships at the heart of her collaboration with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. “And if you relate to it, I’m so sorry.

The Madonna biopic that was to be directed by Madonna is no longer in development at Universal Pictures, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. For most of her acting career, Pamela Adlon was best known for her voice, even though she rarely felt like she had one of her own.
Adlon, née Segall, entered the family business as a teenager — her father Don Segall was a sitcom writer — mostly shuffling around in small TV roles in the Eighties before finding a niche in the Nineties as a voice actor, most famously as middle schooler Bobby Hill on King of the Hill. She worked a lot but rarely felt secure in her career prospects or her level of artistry.

"You want a glass of Burgundy?" Pamela Adlon asks, encouragingly, as she sits down in a ritzy Beverly Hills restaurant. The multi-hyphenate force behind FX's Better Things then gestures to her full face of makeup, which has been professionally applied for a photo shoot: "By the way, this is not me." She catches a glimpse of her smoky eyes in a nearby mirror, she yanks out a few fake lashes. When the beverages arrive in giant goblets that make the pours look a little stingy, she offers a polite thanks.

There are different themes and moods associated with each season that, aside from the weather, make them remarkably different from one another. Summer in particular is associated with vitality, energy, and joy, while winter, in contrast, is most linked to death, lethargy, and hopelessness. These seasonal moods extend to all aspects of pop culture like movies and music too. Albums like 808s and Heartbreak, Reflektor, and Led Zeppelin IV are clearly winter albums, while Some Girls, True Blue, and Californication are without question summer albums.
Even comic books reflect this trend as some are more fit for particular seasons or times of the day than others. Some comics like Daredevil and Batman are nighttime books, while Superman and Amazing Spider-Man are daytime books. Batman Red Rain should be read around Halloween, while The Ultimates and The Ultimates 2 are the comic book equivalent of summer blockbusters. Below is my list of...

On the road to Civil War II! The Ultimates deal with the fallout from their journey Outside - and the return of the Anti-Man! Meanwhile, Project: Pegasus holds the key to humanity's survival... or destruction...and Thanos is coming for it!
Review:
A sort of “mission” statement from Al Ewing and Ken Rocafort from back in the first issue of The Ultimates was how they wanted to harken back to the Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch series. They wanted to create big cinematic set pieces and deal with large scale issues. That’s a very good idea, but the execution of that idea? Not so much.
I enjoy my space cosmic drama. I like Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova. I really enjoy Venom Spaceknight and Captain Marvel, but I just can’t get into this series. I’m not a fan of how Black Panther is written- he...

At Screen Australia's Family Film Forum in Sydney last month, director Kriv Stenders and Roadshow's head of production Seph McKenna talked the development of Red Dog and the opportunity presented by its sequel, Red Dog: True Blue, premiering Boxing Day.
In the video above, Stenders talks about the original conception of the first film - a $30 million feature starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman - and his desire to make something akin to "an Australian Amarcord".
McKenna discusses how the original book by Louis de Bernières on which the film was based wasn't big enough, commercially speaking, to impact Roadshow's decision to greenlight the film, and how surprised Roadshow was that.Red Dog played so well to all four quadrants..
During the panel at Sydney's Uts, Stenders also previewed the upcoming sequel, and said that it was a standalone film that people could see and enjoy without having seen the first film.

While the screen industry has plenty to celebrate as Australian films are set to finish the year with around $87 million in B.O. takings, the results show a sizable number of films failed to address fundamental questions.
Namely: Who precisely will watch my film and which cinemas will play it at a time when theatrical release here increasingly is a sure way to lose money?
Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason is delighted with the range of films and documentaries that have resonated with audiences this year.
Mad Max Fury Road, The Dressmaker, Oddball and The Water Diviner all grossed more than $10 million, and Paper Planes just under. Last Cab to Darwin, Blinky Bill: The Movie, That Sugar Film and Holding the Man performed well, although Mason believes Neil Armfield.s gay-themed romance, which grossed $1.2 million, deserved to make double that.
Still, Mason questions the mindset of a sizable section of the screen industry.

Montreal (AP) -- Pole dancers dressed like nuns, Mike Tyson and nonstop theatrics. Welcome to the church of Madonna. The pop star kicked off her "Rebel Heart'' tour in Montreal on Wednesday night, belting out a mix of her iconic hits and new music from her recently released album, also titled, "Rebel Heart." She even performed "Material Girl'' for the first time since 1990's "Blond Ambition'' tour. DJ and producer Diplo warmed up the crowd with an hour-long set. The show opened with a video featuring Mike Tyson, Chance the Rapper and Madonna, where she addressed topics ranging from censorship to dictatorship. She then descended to the stage in a cage. Madonna wasted no time getting to fan favorites including "Burning Up'' and a mash-up of "Holy Water'' with "Vogue.'' She then pulled a classic move and ripped off her skirt to reveal a barely there nun's outfit and started to pole dance.

Well, this doesn't look comfortable at all... On Wednesday, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie took part in the True Blue Celebrity Softball Game at Yankee Stadium, an NYPD fundraiser, and wore a special uniform consisting of a blue jersey and a pair of white pants...which appeared to be a little too snug. No sliding to base in these, please! No lunges, either. The 52-year-old, who is expected to launch a 2016 Republican presidential campaign but has made no formal announcement, was joined at the event by fellow participants Rudy Giuliani, 71, former presidential candidate and mayor of New York City, and NFL player Eric Decker, 28. The Black Keys’ title track to “ Turn Blue” is a slinky, retro-sounding, mid-tempo track that expands the soundscape heard on “Turn Blue’s” first single, “Fever.” Whereas “Fever,” released a few weeks ago, opens with a ? & The Mysterians’-like farfisa organ before bouncing into a upbeat track, “Turn Blue” is much less percussive, instead relying on on a sinewy, guitar riff and Dan Auerbach’s falsetto, both of which provide a hypnotic pull. It’s easy to get lured in by the easy-going sound, although the lyrics are pretty bleak, bringing in references to hell and doubt. Both “Fever” and “Turn Blue” rely on a trippy, ‘60s feel and have much less thump than recent hits like “Howlin’ For You,” and “Gold On the Ceiling.” Auerbach’s Black Keys’ partner, Patrick Carney, debuted “True Blue” on his SiriusXM show, “Serious Boredom.” “True Blue,” out May 13, was produced by Danger Mouse,...

Test Your Madonna Knowledge Against TheBacklot’s Louis Virtel On The YouTube Game Show “The Experts”
It feels bizarre to claim that I’m a Madonna expert when, really, casual fans of the 55-year-old Material Monarch can accidentally know everything about her too. Madonna’s history is pop history, so even if you’re a Radiohead fan or a sports junkie, you still might know that “Take A Bow” is Madonna’s biggest single and that Christopher Walken guest-stars in the “Bad Girl” video. (Though you might not know that Madonna’s cited inspiration for the “Bad Girl” video is Looking for Mr. Goodbar. Diane!)
Nonetheless, I’m the anointed “Madonna expert” on this week’s episode of The Experts, a YouTube game show that tests savants on a specific area of expertise and pits them against other geeks. I’m competing with a Batman expert and a Melrose Place expert, so whether you’re a dead-eyed Madonna zealot or a low-key Daphne Zuniga fan, there’s something here for you.
