Amar Jyoti (1936) : Brief Review -

Introducing Swashbuckling Adventure and Female Pirate in Indian Cinema along with Woman Centric Emotional Content. So, this was right next year of Two of the First Pirate Classics of world cinema 'Captain Blood' and 'Mutiny On The Bounty' made in 1935.. and that too with a female pirate in a leading role, Wow! Amar Jyoti still remains the only swashbuckling Classic ever made in Bollywood as well as the greatest adventurous flick ever, content wise. The story's social relevance in the form of a costume action adventure involved a queen who becomes a pirate when she faces extreme "patriarchal laws" and is denied custody of her son. She decides to end the slavery tradition in the society, especially for the women and convinces a rajkumari to join her rebellion. With each passing segments, the film unfold new facts related to her past, present and the future from which a salvation emerges at the end and breaks the chain with an innovative timeline. Amar Jyoti was far ahead in terms of action sequences, production design and special effects in Bollywood but it also held the mainstream dramatic motions at the same time to make it a complete audience friendly experience. Durga Khote in one of the most memorable role of her career, as the lady pirate is nothing short of amazement. Another fine actress Shanta Apte joins her and leaves a strong impact whereas the rest of the cast is great in their particular zones. Unlike Hollywood Pirate films, Amar Jyoti is far more intellectual in terms of unheard woman centric content in this genre where only male actors get all the limelight. Amar Jyoti crosses this gender barrier and emerges as an immortal flame that will keep burning and shining forever. An early major achievement for V. Shantaram and Indian Cinema in Path-breaking filmmaking.
