Amos Gitai’s drama about the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
Paris-based Indie Sales has acquired international sales rights to Rabin: The Last Day, a drama about the events leading up to the 1995 murder of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
Directed by Israeli film-maker Amos Gitai, the film will receive its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival (Sept 2-12).
Gitai has previously been nominated five times for Venice’s Golden Lion with Berlin-Yerushalaim (1989), Eden (2001), Alila (2003), Promised Land (2004) and Ana Arabia (2013).
Gitai, who co-wrote Rabin with regular collaborator Marie-José Sanselme, shot the film in February at various sites in Israel, from Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square to the settlement of Kedumim in the West Bank
At the Jerusalem Film Festival last month, where the director gave a masterclass, Gitai told ScreenDaily: “Israeli society is still feeling the shockwaves of [Rabin’s] killing, even if it’s...

Part I. Anger, Suez and Archie Rice
“There they are,” George Devine told John Osborne, surveying The Entertainer‘s opening night audience. “All waiting for you…Same old pack of c***s, fashionable assholes. Just more of them than usual.” The Royal Court had arrived: no longer outcasts, they were London’s main attraction.
Look Back in Anger vindicated Devine’s model of a writer’s-based theater. Osborne’s success attracted a host of dramatists to Sloane Square. There’s Shelagh Delaney, whose A Taste of Honey featured a working-class girl pregnant from an interracial dalliance; Harold Pinter’s The Room, a bizarre “comedy of menace”; and John Arden’s Serjeant Musgrave’s Dance, which aimed a Gatling gun at its audience. Devine encouraged them, however bold or experimental. “You always knew he was on the writer’s side,” Osborne said.

Given that for most people reading this website, Christmas brings with it the coldest and most treacherous of outdoor experiences, it’s little wonder that cinema plays such a big part of the holiday season. Families gathering in their warmly lit living rooms next to the tree and watching classic films of heartwarming sentiment or epic scale is as much a part of common tradition as gift opening or alcohol fuelled social faux pas. While for the Us the classic is It’s a Wonderful Life and over here in the rocky United Kingdom it’s The Great Escape, we all have our quintessential Xmas movie looping every year at the same time ad nauseam. ‘Tis the season for such folly, after all.
But rather than simply highlight the virtues of the Harry Potter franchise or predictable screenings of Die Hard and Doctor Zhivago, Unsung Gems takes this opportunity to...

After the success of Festen in 1998 Thomas Vinterberg suffered a painful fall from grace. Now he has completed The Hunt – and it's just as shocking
Way back in the 1970s, before he became a film-maker and travelled the world, Thomas Vinterberg was just a little kid on a Danish commune, a naked infant amid a herd of naked adults. He sets the scene with gusto. Genitals here and genitals there; children climbing on to undressed laps; the whole place full of generosity and love. In third grade the kids demanded a sex education class and their teacher Olin ("half-pissed, a lovely guy") duly obliged by pulling down his pants. "Today he'd get 15 years in prison," marvels Vinterberg. "He would never work again."
The director – now a handsome, hearty 43 – makes no bones about pining for the commune; of feeling bounced out of Eden and adrift in a constraining modern age. One...

Jeffrey Dean Morgan may be one of the hottest draws on television this spring. The actor best known for playing Denny Duquette on the ABC hit Grey's Anatomy, has been generating buzz for his highly anticipated new drama series, Magic City, which debuts on Starz this week.
But when asked whether it's been tenacity or veracity that helped fuel a surprisingly robust mid-career boom, he happily admits that it's the latter.
"I'm easy to get along with -- I'm not a diva," Morgan admits with a laugh. "I'm just a happy guy."
True, but few actors pull off "happy" with such ease. Morgan's cheerful man's man/everyman persona certainly turned heads and warmed hearts when he played the ill-fated Denny (Izzie's beau) on Grey's (2006-09). But then he surprised critics by packing a studly creative punch on the big screen as a lead player in the box office hit The Watchmen.

Don't accuse Mitch Glazer of trying to capitalize on the one-hour cable drama craze. The veteran screenwriter's new show,"Magic City," which premieres on Starz this weekend, actually began as a pilot for CBS.
"It really wasn't a network show. It never was,” admitted Glazer, who said he's "beyond appreciative" of the network's "rare generosity" in allowing him to move the series to Starz.
The story of how the show landed at Chris Albrecht’s pay channel, meanwhile, sounds like a story line from an as-yet-unwritten episode. It all began four or five years ago, when Albrecht, who had been fired from HBO in 2007, joined Glazer and a few of his all-star pals for a research expedition to Havana.
"It was an insane group," Glazer remembered. "Jimmy Caan and Robert Duvall and Benicio Del Toro." They were visiting a Havana hotel designed by the architect Morris Lapidus when Glazer remarked to Albrecht,...

With its explicit sex and scene of female genital mutilation, Lars von Trier's Antichrist scandalised Cannes this year. Samantha Morton, Gillian Wearing and other women artists and academics give their opinion of the Danish director's provocative new film
The opening title arrives as a provocation, a mission statement. "Lars von Trier," it reads. "Antichrist." At the Cannes film festival, where the film was unveiled in May, the audience responded with indulgent laughter. Over the years the international press has grown accustomed to the antics of the puckish Dane. This, after all, is the man who once dumped his festival prize in a dustbin, who dragged Nicole Kidman through the wringer in Dogville and provoked hoots of outrage when he won the Palme d'Or for his death row musical, Dancer In The Dark. And yet nothing – but nothing – could prepare us for the film that followed.

Where else could Adam Sandler go up against the Powerpuff Girls? The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the names of the films that qualify for this year's Best Animation Feature Film Oscar . and the number is almost double that of last year. Nine films were selected as eligible last year, with Shrek taking home the inaugural award, and for 2002 the Academy has named seventeen eclectic candidates, including Adam Sandler's 8 Crazy Nights, The Powerpuff Girls Movie, and Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie. Disney's two high-profile animated offerings this year . the hit Lilo & Stitch and the flop Treasure Planet . also qualified, as well as Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, which the Mouse distributed in what was considered a badly mismanaged marketing campaign. Two films' eligibility . Eden and The Wild Thornberrys Movie . is predicated on their opening prior to December 31 in Los Angeles. Under the rules governing the award, a maximum of five films may be nominated; nominees will be announced February 11, along with all the other Oscar noms.
Films eligible for the 2002 Best Animated Feature Film award: Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights; Alibaba & the Forty Thieves; Eden; El Bosque Animado (The Living Forest); Hey Arnold!
