Artist Charlie takes his son Jason for pizza to celebrate his successful exhibition, but in the commotion during a traffic accident, he loses sight of the preteen, who is later found buried. Heartbroken, Charlie and his wife Maggie leave the city to run a shop and fish in the country where they grew up, trying to start a new life. Two years later, Charlie volunteers them to take in Matthias, who saw his mother burn a few years after his dad abandoned them. Maggie is hesitant, but the cute kid soon wins a place in their hearts. Still, when Charlie is ready to consider permanent fostering, Maggie objects. Charlie promises Matthias a stable home nevertheless.
