Ben Affleck's fourth directorial film, Live By Night, was delayed when he was sidelined by other jobs, but since he wrapped production on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, he was able to devote more time to the movie and now Warner Bros. has given it an official release date. The period piece will hit theaters on October 20, 2017. The Prohibition-era story centers on a character named Joe Coughlin, "who rebels against his cop father and becomes a career criminal, eventually joining a mobster. He rises up the ranks as the action moves [from Boston] to Tampa, Fla., then Cuba and features rumrunners, femme fatales, betrayals and good men committing plenty of sin." Count me in.

Ben Affleck bootlegging drama Live By Night will finally make its bow in October of next year, Warner Bros. revealed today, with horror sequel Annabelle 2 also securing a release date.
Originally pegged to arrive in December, 2017, Warner has reserved October 20, 2017 for Affleck’s latest directorial effort – his first since the Oscar success of Argo, no less – with the only tangible competition on course to arrive in the same window being Michael Fassbender’s The Snowman.
Elsewhere, New Line Cinema and Village Roadshow’s Fist Fight will drop on February 17, 2017, opening opposite long-gestating adaptation The Dark Tower, The Great Wall and Fox’s Maze Runner: The Death Cure – presuming it isn’t delayed to accommodate Dylan O’Brien’s injury.
Annabelle 2, meanwhile, is now due to arrive on May 19, 2017 where it will face stiff competition in the form of Paramount’s Baywatch movie reboot. Lastly, August 11, 2017 has been reserved for a WB event film,...

Briefly: Shyamalan's new thriller has a date for early 2017. Over at The Wrap, they report that Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions have set a release for M. Night Shyamalan's Split on January 20th, 2017. Split is written and directed by Shyamalan, following up his return to low budget films The Visit this year, and is supposedly a "suspense thriller with elements of the supernatural". Other than that, there's no plot info available. The cast includes James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckley, Jessica Sula and Haley Lu Richardson. There's already a lot of other weird horror scheduled for January 2017 between the delayed Friday the 13th reboot, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, plus Power Rangers and The Dark Tower movie. I'm curious what exactly Shyamalan's Split means - maybe split personality? McAvoy would be a great pick.

When Sony blew the lid off its release schedule, penciling in launch dates for the likes of Underworld 5, The Dark Tower and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, the studio also showed some love to its dormant 90s action series by slating both Bad Boys 3 and Bad Boys 4 for arrival in 2017 and 2019, respectively.
Seems Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowrey are coming back in a major way, right? Not so fast. Will Smith cast doubt over the possibility of him returning as the latter narcotics detective for the long-rumored sequel. Although, during an interview with Zane Low for Beats 1 Radio, the actor appeared much more optimistic about the actioner, even going so far as to say that fans could expect Bad Boys 3 at some point within the “next 12 to 16 months.”

Movies studios are always looking for vacant weeks for their films. Without competition, obviously, these films have a better chance of making millions of dollars. Studios have even gone to great lengths to move the release dates of their films so that they.re not competing with another project. But Columbia and Lionsgate Films have forgone tradition and gallantly decided to go head to head, as The Dark Tower and Power Rangers, respectively, are both now going to be released on January 13th, 2017. But that.s not the only big money movie that.s due to come out that exact same day. Because Columbia Pictures, according to Box Office Mojo, have also scheduled The Magnificent Seven for a January 13th, 2017, release date, too. Take that with a grain of salt, as IMDb still has a 2016 release date on Seven. But basically, that means that on the second Friday of 2017, you...

The big question about this current crop of news in which a "The Dark Tower" adaptation is a go is: can we trust it? This project has gone through so many iterations and been on and off so many times, I'm not convinced it's actually going to take off this time around though most entertainment news sites seem to believe that this time, for whatever reason, it's for realsies.
Since we last touched on the production, the project has gone through a couple of iterations including a series only approach, a movies only approach and even a Netflix series but they've all fallen through. BioWare has done some incredible things with the Star Wars license. While there have been some stumbles with The Old Republic, it's hard to deny how good the company is at crafting memorable Sci-Fi/Fantasy stories in general (just look at the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises). With another Star Wars game apparently in the works from them, I got to thinking about which other Sci-Fi/Fantasy franchises could use a great game from the Bioware team.
I'm a sucker for fun stories and epic tales; two things BioWare seems to specialize in. Since they've done so well with one of the biggest science fiction properties around, Star Wars, I'm sure they're more than able to handle other much beloved sci-fi and fantasy franchise. There are several worthy tales out there which haven't received the video game attention they deserve, or simply didn't get good games, so perhaps BioWare...

Entertainment Geekly is a weekly column that examines pop culture through a geek lens and simultaneously examines contemporary geek culture through a pop lens. So many lenses! This week there are two columns inspired by True Detective, partially because True Detective was a thought-provoking TV show which deserves a significant amount of thoughtful analysis, but mainly because I missed a column last week. Today: A consideration of where the show’s ending fits into the pantheon. Tomorrow: A meditation on the show’s meaning, or lack thereof. Spoilers follow.
True Detective only ran for eight episodes, but the final episode carried series-finale weight and expectation.

It's only fitting that the host of the new Nerdist News online show is a nerd herself, albeit of the "hot" variety. The quick-witted and uber-friendly Jessica Chobot is a geek gamer's dream come true and loves left-of-center TV shows, all things Wonder Woman, and is a video game junkie who's actually written her first game for PlayStation Network, coming out very soon. She happily answers six pertinent questions for ETonline...

Well, it’s upon us once again, and not a moment too soon: the superlative annual comic convention Thought Bubble is back as part of both the Leeds International Film Festival and Comic Art Festival, with a signing tour currently wending its way across Britain and the main events happening this weekend at the Royal Armouries.
And, boy, is there a lot going on.
So I thought I’d put together a brief guide to my picks of the panels and events being put on over the weekend. This is by no means exhaustive, but hopefully (if your tastes are anything like mine) it’ll at least steer you in the right direction. If you’re at all disappointed by where I send you, I can be found yelling at Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie for quitting Young Avengers…

Billy goes once more unto the breach. Here's his review of the Revolution season 2 opener...
This review contains spoilers.
2.1 Born in the USA.
As a child, I reacted strongly to those TV shows where the characters experienced extreme jeopardy. These sent me scurrying behind a chair until the 'danger' had passed. For entirely different reasons the return of Revolution gave me that same feeling again, that hiding might be a better option to confrontation.
It's not that anything that goes on in it is sufficiently dramatic enough to warrant a panic attack or even mild concern. It's just that I suffer with an inherent low incredulity level that if exceeded, makes me feel violently nauseated, and this TV show has a knack of sending me past that point within the first five minutes of each and every episode.
On that basis, you might reasonably wonder why I review it,...

BioWare did some incredible things with the Star Wars license. While there have been some stumbles with The Old Republic, it's hard to deny how good the company is at crafting memorable Sci-Fi/Fantasy stories in general (just look at the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises). With another Star Wars game apparently in the works from them, I got to thinking about which other Sci-Fi/Fantasy licenses would benefit from a Bioware crafted game.
I suppose I should preface this with how big of a Sci-Fi/Fantasy nerd I am, though chances are, you've figured that out by now. I'm a sucker for fun stories and epic tales; two things BioWare seems to specialize in. Since they've done so well with one of the biggest science fiction properties around, I'm sure they're more than able to handle other licensed properties. There are several worthy tales out there which haven't...

Billy did it! He watched and reviewed Revolution's entire first season! Now he's off for a well-deserved lie down in a dark room...
This review contains spoilers.
1.20 The Dark Tower
I've just watched the season finale of Revolution, and there were things in it so dumb, so utterly idiotic, that if it ended here I'd be overjoyed. The opening montage just reminded me of some of the truly abysmal plots and characters that we've been subjected to since it all began, but they decided to top that with some complete head-slap sequences here, probably too many to mention within the word count I'm prepared to write on this subject.
But before I get to some of those, let's summarise by character where after twenty episodes we are. Jason hates Tom, loves Charlie. Tom loves only Tom, and the wife that he never sees. Rachel dearly loves Rachel,...

"The Dark Tower" was mostly concerned with tying up loose ends for some Revolution characters, while widening the emotional gaps between others. It also set out to fundamentally redefine the show - and it succeeded beautifully.
The small moment that changed everything for Miles - Monroe killing a rebel’s wife and children - was what ultimately altered Miles’ entire outlook on the militia. Tom is right: Monroe’s obsession with Miles is borderline erotic.
The latter’s friendship with Monroe completely dissipated after he killed the rebel’s wife and kids, as he lost all interest in ever getting it back to a better place. He acknowledged what they once shared, but Miles merely uses Monroe as a distraction to get in The Tower, not caring if he gets shot or not in his escape to the forest.
Rachel’s singular mission of turning the power back on blinded...

"Revolution" ended its first season with a bang, as uber-villain Randall Flynn (Colm Feore) launched Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (fancy!) to wipe out Atlanta and Philadelphia after Rachel (Elizabeth Mitchell) and Aaron (Zak Orth) succeeded in turning the power back on.
When he finished explaining his wicked plan to a shocked Rachel, Aaron, Miles (Billy Burke) and Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos), Randall called himself a "patriot" and shot himself in the head. In the episode's final sequence, the exiled President of the United States (a shadowy figure likely to be cast with some sort of name actor for next season) is seen being told it's time to return home. The camera pulls out of his hiding place and reveals it's located in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
So there's your cliffhanger...

"Revolution" Season 1 comes to a close on Monday night and star Billy Burke says the episode, "The Dark Tower," builds to a stunning climax.
"Everything we've been fighting for comes into question," Burke revealed during a conference call to promote the finale. "It all culminates in the event that's about to take place in the tower. We all find out what we were fighting for all along may not be -- physically or spiritually -- what we thought we were fighting for."
Burke calls the episode "a great way to not only cap off this season but bring us into the next." But don't expect him to give any hints about what might happen in Season 2. He says he's completely in the dark: "I have not seen one line or one script from next season," Burke says. "So I don't have a clue what we're going into."

Cheeky, dorky, delectable comic-book theater is alive and well and living in the artfully underlit corners of New York’s off-grid theater-scene. If you’re in the mood for super-slo-mo action sequences, brilliant Dumpster-sourced puppetry, splash-panel staging, and all manner of scuffed-twee playfulness, congratulations, your theater season has landed, not with a bang, but with a Wham!At the New Ohio, Robert Askins, the manic voice behind Hand to God, is back with another puppet-driven, Podunk-derived genre experiment. Ps Jones and the Frozen City — a small, playful work — is a postapocalyptic sci-fi gumbo giddily cribbed from dozens of sources, among them The Hunger Games, Hellboy, The Dark Tower, The Wizard of Oz, and Jefferson Starship. Our hero is Pig Shit Jones (Joe Paulik), an earnest, daydreaming young poop-shoveler from the blighted heartland, whose character Paulik pitches somewhere between Huckleberrys Finn and Hound. I see an end to magic in your future, especially if you are a fan of Merlin. The BBC series has announced that it’s fifth season will also be it’s last. There is; however, a silver lining. Are you game for some spin-offs?
BBC One will say good-bye to the Arthurian legend-rich series, Merlin, which stars Colin Morgan, Bradley James and Katie McGrath, this Christmas. Don’t take the news as anti-climactic, though. The show’s final notes involve an epic fight for Camelot.
Behind the scenes, this ending is actually a new beginning. According to THR, co-creators and executive producers Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy will use the opportunity to depart Elisabeth Murdoch’s Shine TV and set up their own outfit.
Capps and Murphy said, “We always felt the story of the legend was best told across five series, leading to a spectacular finale that draws...

Well, colour me surprised once again. Far from letting the quality of its episode roster dip with a new instalment that clearly has ‘filler’ written all over it, the writers of Merlin have brought us another solid adventure in A Lesson In Vengeance. There are one or two gripes that hold it back from being a quintessential instalment, but all the same the positives far outweigh the negatives this week; something I’m glad to say given the opposite being true of some of the earlier episodes this season.
Leading on from the events of The Dark Tower, we head back to Camelot this week to discover the ramifications of Morgana’s magical influence over Queen Gwen. It turns out the monarch has now been turned fully against her husband, attempting to murder her betrothed at any possible moment. Merlin rightly notices the change of heart...

For all its faults, the fifth season of Merlin has so far been full of surprises. From prophecies of impending doom for the kingdom of Camelot to the return of the ambiguous Mordred, it’s been pretty challenging to keep a tap on what’s true and what’s going to change this year, though that’s working more in the show’s favour this week. The Dark Tower remains another strong offering that almost makes it up for the lows of Resurrection and Another’s Sorrow.
First up, let’s get the obvious talking point out into the open- two game-changing twists came late in the day that are sure to shape the second half of the season. Elyan’s death was slightly foreshadowed by star Adeotimiwa Edun announcing his departure from the show on Twitter recently, yet it still came as enough as a...
