Today we're reviewing The Boy Next Door and Mortdecai, but not before we discuss the American Sniper fake baby story a little more, chat about the NFL's #Deflategate and answer a lot of American Sniper and Selma related questions. It said something about HBO’s elevating stature as a programmer that the company strategy was no longer catch-as-catch-can. HBO now found itself in the enviable position of being able to afford to turn shows down based on its view the project was – in the phrase I was coming to hear more and more often – “an HBO show.” Like the old joke about art, nobody could define what that meant, but they knew it when they saw it.
Case in point:
In 1996, HBO rolled out Arli$$ (1996-2002). Like The Larry Sanders Show, Arli$$ came from the off-kilter imagination of a stand-up comic, in this case Robert Wuhl, who also starred. In synopsis – and no doubt why HBO was interested – Arli$$ sounded like a sports version of The Larry Sanders Show. Wuhl played Arliss Michaels, a top-flight sports agent with the integrity of a hired killer moving through the circles of...

Farmer Gray is tooling down the road one fine day in 1981, and there ahead of him he sees Sam’s Appliance Store. Farmer Gray has had a heck of a wheat crop this year and he’s got $40,000 burning a hole in his pocket. On a whim, he goes into Sam’s. He’s worked hard this year; he figures he owes himself a toy.
“Sam,” he says. “I’m all the way the heck out in the middle of nowhere. You got one of those forty, fifty foot TV antennas I could put up so I could get at least a little bit of TV? I hear this Happy Days thing is just terrific, but where I’m sitting, I can’t get anything on my set but the buzz from my wife’s Lady Schick.”
And old Sam, why he says, “I can do you one better, Farmer Gray.

In celebration of the October 2nd Blu-ray release of the Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection from Universal Studios Home Entertainment, veteran horror historian Scott Essman has prepared a truly monstrous trip back through time for you classic horror fans!
It’s a quiet dusty morning in the summer of 1916 and all but a small eastern region of the San Fernando Valley is largely undeveloped, to say nothing of unpopulated. For the past year, inside of an unassuming front gate just over the hill from Los Angeles proper, two men are trying to forge their path in the fledgling motion picture business: Lon Chaney and Jack Pierce. Nascent actors Chaney, 33, and Pierce, 27, were completely unknown, but each had an angle; they could both work magic out of a simple makeup case, fully transforming their faces and even parts of their bodies to put themselves into a better position to be cast in a role.

About time! Time to stop working and focus on something that Really matters. After a lot of hemming and hawing, Universal is bringing all of our favorite famous monsters of filmland (hey…) to Blu-Ray in a massive collection featuring eight movies and eight monsters (Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Wolf Man, Phantom Of The Opera, The Invisible Man and The Bride Of Frankenstein) jam-packed with awesome special features. The Creature will even be in 3-D, if your TV allows such a wondrous thing. I could go on and on about this, but I think what you really want to read is the press release (complete with titles and special features) from Universal. Give it a read and when it’s available for pre-order (the collection is released October 2nd), we will put up a link immediately.

For all the entertaining he did in life, William Castle is proving to be just as enjoyable in the afterlife. We recently told you about his upcoming book From the Grave: The Prayer. Now the ghostly scribe has yet another work about to be released, and this one's based around a classic film.

Pahrump - Call it Hof Vegas. Dennis Hof of HBO’s Cathouse no longer wants me to warn readers that his Bunny Ranch empire is in only Reno and not Las Vegas. He’s bringing his style of adult fun to the outskirts of Sin City. He called up the hotline from the middle of Crystal, Nevada to spread the news. The sounds of hammering and drills came from his end of the phone.
“We’re moving around here and getting some things done,” Dennis Hof said. “I bought two 35 year old rundown, rat trap brothels. What you’re buying is the licenses.”
The two old names were Cherry Patch Ranch and Mabel’s Whore House. The new places are Love Ranch and Dennis Hof’s Cathouse. “Those are name that are synonymous with good times.”
There are no good times for the former owner. He got arrested for bribing a county official.
