Bernie Weinstock has merged with another detective agency since his last case, and has a new partner in Norman Lugg. However the company is losing money due to Bernie's gambling and after losing money at the races, he decides to join a Gamblers Anonymous course for help with his addiction. But by chance his counsellor there, Helen Carter, has a problem of her own that she wants him to investigate. After going through her father's papers she discovers that he once hid some valuable diamonds he came across during the war in Holland, which Helen wants to find. But how are Bernie and his gang going to find them with no clue to their whereabouts?

Bernie faces a masked intruder in his office, little knowing that he has been sent by Mr Blackman, a local crook who has discovered the cassette tape with Helen's story of the diamonds on it after Bernie's car was stolen. However, after his goon finds nothing, Blackman decides to keep them on watch and see where they go. As it is, the gang seem stumped as where to start until Bernie's young assistant, Oliver Ottenshaw, suggests checking the military records of where Helen's father was stationed. It leads them to question Charles Edgerton, a retired major in the army, but it seems someone is eager to stop him talking.

Bernie and Norman stay over at a pub overnight after their fruitless interview with Colonel Edgerton, little realizing that they are under surveillance from various people eager to find out what they know about the diamonds. Someone who does is Foxwell, Edgerton's batman, who is eager to prevent them finding out more. Bernie and Norman track down Jack Carter's former army sergeant George Billyard, now a Navy commander in Brighton, to see if he knows more. Meanwhile, Helen may have a lead of her own with a old photograph, but little realizes her life may be in danger.

Helen has found herself kidnapped by Cyril Blackman's thugs, but manages to escape. However, Bernie and the gang need to find her quickly before the others get to her. They also discover that Inspector Dearlove has also become aware of their activity and starts making awkward inquiries. Deciding to travel to Holland to try and find the woman on the old photograph found in Helen's father's possessions, they have no idea that two others are already there with the same idea.

Bernie and Norman discover the woman in the old photograph, but also learn that Foxwell and Billyard are also out in Holland looking for the diamonds. Back home, Oliver and Helen are at an art gallery, where one of the paintings gives Oliver an idea of where the diamonds are. But none of the gang realize just what danger they are all in, with Bernie and Norman's search leading them to a remote castle in Bavaria.

Bernie and Norman find themselves prisoner in General Von Klaus' castle, along with Foxwell and Billyard, after being arrested as suspected art thieves. They agree to work together in their bid to get out, but there are still the diamonds to find, as well as whether they can trust their new associates. Meanwhile, back home Helen has been kidnapped again by Cyril Blackman's thugs, who warns the gang she will only be returned in exchange for the diamonds. What are they to do?
