I don't understand the story at all, but the animation was lovely.

The 1970s was a very, very low period for animation. Think about it--Disney was doing very little and most of the other decent studios (like MGM and Looney Tunes at Warner) had long since closed up shop. And, the big animation giant of the age was Hanna-Barbera. Yikes. So, when you view independent animation of this time, take this into account and cut them some slack. There just wasn't much going on then and what was being rarely can compete with any of the stuff of the 1940s, 50s or the last 20 years.

"Oiseau de Nuit" ("Nightbird") is one of the better quality animations of this period. While I don't pretend that I understand the odd story (and I doubt if you will either), the animation style was quite nice. While not as fluid as more modern animation, the moody gray-blue colors of much of the film were nice and moody and the piece looks like a work of art. Quite pretty. But try as I might, I couldn't understand the story nor why the bird looked like a naked lady and bird. Odd but very beautiful.
