When White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre first stood before the media in the White House briefing room last month, the moment made history: She was the first African-American woman to do so in 30 years and the first LGBTQ woman to do so, period.
While the briefing itself played out as many of the others during Joe Biden’s administration, it was enough of a moment to draw reporters’ notice and the presence of a special guest: Judy Smith, who made that history three decades earlier as the first Black woman to lead a briefing and, more recently, was the inspiration for the ABC series Scandal.
“Standing in support. Sisterhood. Always,” Smith wrote on Twitter about the moment.
Jean-Pierre, 46, already was a familiar face to viewers and news junkies, as an MSNBC political analyst and as chief public affairs officer for MoveOn. That is not such an unusual path to the West Wing,...

MSNBC is reworking its Saturday and Sunday schedules, giving Ali Velshi a morning program and adding Alicia Menendez to the roster.
The NBCUniversal-owned cable-news outlet will pluck Velshi from its weekday schedule, and give him a morning program that stretches from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The move opens up the weekday 3 p.m. hour and breaks up the on-air team that leads “Velshi & Ruhle” at 1 p.m. David Gura, who currently anchors “Up” on Sunday mornings, will instead anchor “MSNBC Live” from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The new schedule is slated to launch in 2020.
“Going into 2020, there won’t be any slow news days. Our investment in weekends continues to be a priority for us,” says Phil Griffin, president of MSNBC.
The news outlet has for the past few years worked to build its weekend lineup as the national news cycle has grown more intense.

Henry, who has been with Fox News since 2011, will work with co-anchor Sandra Smith on the three-hour news program. He will take over the slot from Bill Hemmer, who has been named to anchor the cable-news network’s 3 p.m. slot, which Smith vacated in October. Et has learned that Today weekend co-host Craig Melvin is in the running to replace Matt Lauer as co-host of Today.
A source at the show tells Et that both NBC and staff are fans of 38-year-old Melvin. Melvin currently anchors MSNBC Live on weekdays, and is co-anchor of Today Saturday edition.
“This would give the network the opportunity to make Melvin into a star at NBC,” the source says. “This would be clean slate.”
Melvin has been married to Espn sports anchor Lindsay Czarniak since 2011. The couple has two children together.
As for the possibility that Hoda Kotb would replace Lauer, our source says that would be “highly doubtful,” as Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford’s Today hour is already a huge success, and they wouldn't want to change the dynamic.

On Sunday evening, a lone gunman in Las Vegas left at least 50 dead and more than 400 injured at an outdoor music festival. Police said the shooter, identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, killed himself as they closed in on him inside the Mandalay Bay Hotel. The massacre is the deadliest in United States history, and for at least one major law enforcement official, it’s something Americans will just have to get used to. During an appearance on MSNBC Live with Stephanie Ruhle, former New York City and Los Angeles police commissioner Bill Bratton sounded a grim tone, telling Ruhle that.

On Friday, MSNBC announced that MSNBC Live anchor Thomas Roberts will be taking over Way Too Early, the 5:30 am show that precedes Morning Joe. On this special occasion, Roberts agreed to a Mediaite Q&A on the move, how it will affect husband Patrick Abner, what it means for Roberts's future, and whether or not there was a Noah Rothman-related motive involved, among other things.

Eight months after MSNBC named Brian Shactman new anchor of Way Too Early — its pre-dawn lead-in to Morning Joe — the cable news net has tapped Thomas Roberts to replace him starting Monday. Roberts said in the announcement the job is “right in line with my career goals and aspirations.” Shactman, meanwhile, said in this morning’s announcement he’d come to the conclusion that “I don’t want politics to be my only focus. … I want to continue to branch out, making sure my career is not solely defined by that.” Shactman got the show when Willie Geist was named co-anchor of Today‘s 9 Am hour. MSNBC president Phil Griffin said Roberts got the gig because his “unique personality and point of view are just the right mix to lead-in to Morning Joe.” When The Daily Caller reported the openly gay Roberts was replacing Shactman because the left-leaning channel wants...

Aisha Tyler has booked a guest-appearance on HBO’s upcoming human sexuality drama Open, according to TVLine. She’ll play a married nurse with a “modern outlook on matrimony”.
In frustrating but unsurprising news, Fxx has cancelled Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, as first reported by Defamer. At this point, that raises the question if Fxx can even support original programming. Established hits like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League were able to survive a move, but instead of debuting Chozen, Fxx will air repurposed episodes of Da Ali G Show.
The combination of Guy Branum and Janine Brito will be missed.
Individually they were great, together they’re amazing.
Balancing out that loss to comedy and diversity slightly is the news that NBC is reviving Last Comic Standing with Wanda Sykes joining the show as a producer. I tend to like the talent search episodes of Last Comic Standing.

Update, 1 Pm: On Today’s MSNBC Live, Thomas Roberts asked Miss Universe pageant co-owner Donald Trump asked if giving a thumbs up to his hosting gig, which is “professionally flying in the face of” Russian anti-gay laws, “change any of your prior public stances on marriage equality here in the U.S?” “No, it doesn’t change,” Trump responded, adding that Roberts is “a wonderful guy.” Trump said he’s invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the pageant, on November 9. “I know for a fact that he wants very much to come, but we’ll have to see. We haven’t heard yet, but we have invited him.” Previous: NBC News landed itself a great angle on a big news story when MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts signed to co-host the Miss Universe Pageant in Russia next month, joining NBC’s America’s Got Talent judge/“Spice Girl” Mel B. Roberts.

The debate over the Republican House of Representatives has already included surreal moments involving rape pregnancies and masturbating fetuses, but a crackling exchange on MSNBC Live Monday morning yielded yet another Wtf moment. Toward the end of a segment on the proposed ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, anchor Craig Melvin bluntly accused Rep.
