Like Two Making Of Documentaries In One
lchadbou-326-2659222 July 2018
The underrated French New Wave director Jacques Rozier was drawn to fellow mavericks and made two documentaries about earlier filmmakers who had been involved with scandalous premieres of their works: Luis Bunuel (with the film L,Age D,Or still banned at the time in 1964) and here Jean Vigo (whose Zero De Conduite caused an uproar and was suppressed). The Vigo documentary is the stronger of the two as it is almost an hour longer and can go into much more depth about the two films it covers the making and exhibition of.Though Vigo had died prematurely thirty years before, the film in a way does not lose by not having him as a subject himself to be interviewed,as directors are often cagey ( Bunuel is in the other film) when asked to comment on their own efforts, and sometimes even misleading.
