The second TelevisaUnivision movie from Salma Hayek Pinault’s Ventanarosa Productions will get its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
El Sabor de la Navidad (working title A Merry Mexican Christmas) will bow Sept. 13 as part of TIFF’s special presentations program before becoming available on the Spanish-language streaming platform ViX in November.
In the tradition of many holiday classics, El Sabor de la Navidad will follow three storylines that inevitably converge in the third act. All set in Mexico City during Christmastime, the first story follows an estranged daughter seeking reconciliation with her family; the second spotlights two rival Santa Clauses in Alameda Central Park; and the third features a lonely chef who cooks Christmas dinners for other families catching feelings for her assistant.

Filmmaker-friendly platform Mowies.com, founded by Colombian producers Alejo Arango (“Al Final del Espectro”), Santiago Zapata (“Monos”) and their chief technology officer, Sergio Restrepo, has picked up the catalogs of Alebrije, LatAm Films and Morbido, along with some Anima Studios shows.
“We’re so pleased to join Mowies with some of our most notable titles like “Amar Te Duele,” “Todo el Poder,” and “Nicotina,” films that have all but defined an era of Mexican cinema,” said Alebrije’s Monica Lozano, who has produced such iconic films as “Amores Perros” and “Instructions Not Included.”
“We’re also launching the world premiere of “Sin Dios y Sin Diablo,” a documentary about the life of writer Joaquin Sabines, which we’re sure will find a great audience on the platform,” she added.

Famous Mexican actress Martha Higadera (Amar Te Duele) decided to write a romantic comedy for a Valentine's Day release, and now it is a reality called Get Married If You Can (Cásese Quien Pueda), directed by first-timer Marco Polo Constandse and starring Higareda herself. The movie works from a very basic premise and uses the rom-com formula to an annoying result. The story is about Ana (Higareda), a young spoiled woman who finds out that her fiancé cheated on her just before their weeding.
