What It Says In The Movie
Famous kabuki performer Kikugoro IV performs the Lion Dance, in which a young girl is possessed by the spirit of a lion and transforms into the demonic beast.
The art of kabuki is pretty much a mystery to me; my understanding is limited to a few techniques in highly mannered Japanese movies, so the subtleties of Kikoguro's performance are lost on me. It's clear from this documentary that this is an excellent performance, well captured by cameras under the direction of Yasujiro Ozu (at least I presume they are, given my admiration for Ozu).
This documentary was intended for foreign showings. Given the waning but still great clout of benshi, live film narrators in Japan, Any showings would have lacked the recorded narration and titles.
